In mint condition.<br/> <br/> This is the splendid deluxe version of a finely crafted private press edition of Wilde's fairy tales "The Nightingale and the Rose" "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant." It is the third work issued by the Bear Press founded in 1979 by literary scholar Wolfram Benda and still in operation. According to the firm's website "at a time when the craftsmanship and ethos of the artisan in bookmaking have been damaged by ever-increasing industrialization and neglect . . . The Bear Press . . . tries to achieve the highest possible degree of technical and artistic perfection in its printed works." The font used to print the text and the artist chosen to illustrate each work are carefully selected to express "the individual author's personality and intention." Even the discriminating aesthete Wilde 1854-1900 would be pleased with the choices here especially for the luxurious vellum printing: the type is set in refined Walbaum Antiqua and shown off with special effect by the creamy leaves; the etchings by Austrian artist Peter Klitsch b. 1934 are meticulous detailed and reminiscent of the work of Wilde's friend Aubrey Beardsley; and the binding is the epitome of tasteful restraint flawlessly executed with premium materials. <br /> <br /> The three tales here first appeared in 1888 and are bittersweet in their themes of love and self-sacrifice. His stories for children were one of Wilde's early successes and DNB notes "Their permanent place in child affections refutes the vulgarism that Wilde's literary reputation arose from his legal notoriety. In all cases the fairy tales are on the child's side celebrating the courage and generosity of the poor and vulnerable while their satire mocks the kind of pomposity and hypocrisy children can recognize." His early works were created in Art Nouveau style but later through Art Deco he found his way to International Modernism.<br /> <p><p><br /> The scandalous story of The Priest and the Acolyte here in A. W. Hiller’s translation is attributed to Oscar Wilde however its real author was John Francis Bloxam 1873–1928 an English Uranian author and churchman. A near fine book a little spotted to the page edges - A little rubbed to the spine tips and corners but a sharp lovely example. Accompanied by a silver cigarette holder embossed with foliate scrolls and a vacant shield cartouche hallmarked Birmingham 1894 with the maker's mark that of Frederick Wald. A beautiful amber ending which pulls in and out. Purchased in Paris from the family of the proprietor of the Hotel d'Alsace Jean Dupoirer sometime before 1914. From the colllection of David Adamson a mining engineer and great-grandfather of the original seller at Bonhams Knightsbridge 1997 who had a life-long admiration for Wilde's work. The renowned Irish playwright and poet died on November 30 1900 at the Hotel d'Alsace in Paris now L'Hôtel. After serving two years of hard labor for "gross indecency" due to his homosexuality Wilde fled to France impoverished and shunned by society. Living under the name Sebastian Melmoth he took up residence at the modest hotel. His health declined rapidly due to meningitis complications from an earlier ear infection. Wilde reportedly quipped on his deathbed "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go." He passed away destitute but surrounded by a few loyal friends. Wilde was initially buried in a pauper's grave at Bagneux Cemetery but his remains were later moved to Père Lachaise Cemetery where his tomb adorned with a modernist angel now draws admirers from around the world. His wit and tragedy remain enduring symbols of artistic genius and societal hypocrisy. A unique item now housed in a custom made box Methuen unknown

In some cases the volumes contain additional matter which had not previously been reprinted while some of the volumes contain matter here published for the first time' Mason p. 459. One volume The Picture of Dorian Gray though entirely uniform with the others was published by Charles Carrington in Paris. Wilde died bankrupt in Paris in 1900; the journalist and gallery owner Robert Baldwin Ross remained loyal to his friend after Wilde's 1895 trial for gross indecency and subsequent prison sentence. 'Before his release from Reading gaol Wilde had appointed Ross his literary executor; but with Wilde's estate bankrupt it was not until 1905 that Ross was able to pay Wilde's creditors and annul the bankruptcy. In 1905 Ross published De Profundis an abridged version of Wilde's tormented prison letter to Lord Alfred Douglas. In 1908 Ross published in fourteen volumes The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde' ODNB. This set is without the seldom-found fifteenth volume For the Love of the King published in 1922 as a supplementary volume to the 1908 Works. Mabel Cosgrove Wodehouse-Pearse Princess Chan-Toon had approached Methuen with letters purportedly by Wilde formerly in the possession of Robert Ross as well as the manuscript of the 'long-lost' play by Wilde; Wilde's bibliographer Christopher Sclater Millard - better known by his pseudonym Stuart Mason - sued Methuen for libel on the grounds that they had knowingly offered for sale as genuine a book which they knew to be a forgery. Wodehouse-Pearse was unable to attend the trial as she was then in prison for defrauding an elderly woman following a stint in a Mexican prison for blackmail.Mason pp. 459-85. hardcover

Each man kills the thing he loves First Russian edition first printing of this translation by Konstantin Bal'mont 1867-1942 one of the most significant Symbolists of Russia's "Silver Age" of poetry with the original illustrated wrappers by Modest Durnov 1867-1928. Bal'mont grew up on his family estate to the north-east of Moscow and demonstrated a flair for writing and languages from childhood. His 1901 collection of poems Burning Buildings Goryashchie zdaniya made him into a leading figure in the Russian Symbolist movement. He also translated Walt Whitman into Russian. Durnov is perhaps best known as an architect. His unrealised designs for Moscow's Aumont Omon Theatre included styling the entrance as the open maw of a dragon into which the public would pass. He appears to have met Wilde on a trip to London and the latter became his favourite author. In addition to executing the portrait which graces the wrappers Durnov also illustrated the 1906 Russian edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Sergei Polyakov established Skorpion in 1899 and it quickly became a unifying force in Russian Symbolism publishing poets such as Gumilev and Belyi. It also focused on publishing translations including the work of Ibsen and Poe. Bal'mont and Durnov were both heavily involved in the house from the time of its conception. Octavo 184 x 120 mm.
