Sharp early edition of the celebrated playwright's collected dramatic works. Bound by brownish-mauve cloth with gilt lettering on front board and spine. Top edges gilt. All volumes are square tight and generally clean throughout with minimal page toning. Ownership signature on the front end-paper of volume I only. Bookseller ticket Paul Elder of San Francisco on the rear paste-downs of volumes II and III only. Small chip to lower corner of the title page of the volume I but just the outer edge and not affecting text. Rear hinge starting on volume I but quite firm. Mild rubbing to extremities and a few small puckers to cloth in a few places though very minor. A very pretty sound collectable set and surprisingly uncommon. The memoir was wholly his work the fictional Jean Paul Raymond being a literary artifice. Small bookplate on front pastedown. Front free and rear endpapers and penultimate blank tanned and spotted.
