1906005823Sunderland: Keystone Press 1906. Wilde visited America in 1882 lecturing there to explain the Aesthetic Movement. On his return to England he gave this "report" in September of 1883. Edited and with an introduction by Stuart Mason. pseudonym of Christopher Millard 1872-1927 who was the first bibliographer of Wilde's works. This is a Very Good minus copy of the First Edition which was LIMITED to 500 copies 50 on handmade paper. A rare work bound in fragile stitched paper wraps. Clean text; 40 pages. The cover is present but detached. at the front. All other pages still nicely bound. This copy comes in a custom folder within a slipcase bound in green cloth. The backstrip is faded and the boards are also discolored at the edges more so the rear board. The front board is a bit marked with the most prominent mark measuring roughly 2". There is a previous owner's name in the inside margin of the terminal leaf. "Salome" was the first of nine books that would be illustrated by Vassos between 1927 and 1935. Includes thirteen black and white illustrations by John Vassos who also designed the endpapers. Number 242 in an edition limited to 500. Signed by Vassos on the limitation page. E. P. This book is number 180. First printing of this new Robinson illustrated edition. With 12 full color plates by Charles Robinson each plate protected by tissue paper. Numerous black and white drawings by Robinson. The stories included in this book are The Happy Prince The Nightingale and the Rose The Selfish Giant The Devoted Friend and The Remarkable Rocket. Bound in cream vellum boards with gilt spine and front cover titles and decorations. Top two inches of the spine is missing. No previous owner marks. Full color plates are all clean and very bright with no foxing or fading. Text is bright with very little spotting. Binding has significant wear and is cracked but sound with no loose pages. The condition rating of Fair is due to significant wear to covers and very real damage to spine but inside is beautiful. This was the first novel of American writer Percival Wilde who was best known for his one-act plays. Wilde studied and lived in New York in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. This particular work follows the story of an ambitious young woman named Molly May who stops at nothing to get what she wants. Wilde explores the lengths his character will go to in order to escape her poor upbringing. Set partly in New York in the late Nineteenth Century and partly in a small Connecticut town in the Twentieth Century. In original publisher's black cloth binding with a clipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Slight marks to boards mainly to the front. Age toning and the odd mark to endpapers.
