1899biblio3<p>This printing of Oscar Wilde's <em>Ballad of Reading Gaol </em>was published on 23 June 1899 under the pseudonym C.3.3. his prison cell number. <em>Mustard boards with white cloth spine. Condition: In very good condition. </em><em>Light soiling to original publisher's two-tone mustard and white cloth boards and spine. Seventh </em>printing of Leonard Smithers 1899 Edition 8°. 31 pages. It was the first to reveal the author's identity putting the name Oscar Wilde in square brackets under his cell number on the title page. Lettered sewn card wrappers both of which are detached and somewhat nicked and chipped with some edge loss and with portions of the unprinted paper spine absent. Some discolouration to the margins of the first and final leaves where the wrappers are defective yet really a very crisp copy thereafter. This constitutes the first appearance in print of Wilde's prose-poem predating its appearance with the other five examples in July 1894 issue of 'The Fortnightly Review'. Other contributors to this issue include Eric Stenbok his essay 'The Other Side. A Breton Legend' A.R.Bayley his essay 'The Defence of Posey' and his poem 'In Lyonesse' Gleeson White his essay 'In Praise of Idleness' Max Beerbohm his essay 'The Incomparable Beauty of Modern Dress' contributed as 'H.M.Beerbohm' John Addington Symonds his brief poem 'From the Arabic' and the editor his poems 'In Summer' and 'Apologia Pro Classe Sua'. Tyssen Amherst. The hospital now known as Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children was originally formed by two Quaker sisters in 1867. This anthology includes a brief history of the hospital as well as 'Le Jardin des Tuileries' by Oscar Wilde 'Old Age - a Sonnet' by the Earl of Rosslyn 'Faith and Unfaith' by Lady Augusta Noel 'Hunter Quatermain's Story' by H. Rider Haggard 'Seekers For a City' by Andrew Lang and more. Illustrated with a frontispiece and in-text illustrations throughout by Randolph Caldecott W. Callow Tristram Ellis and more. Twenty pages of adverts to the rear. In a rebacked quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Part of the original paper spine has been restored by rebacking. Some rubbing and discolouration to the boards and spine including a few light spots. Minor bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Two tide marks to the rear board. Front hinge is a little strained rear hinge is starting but firm. Spots to the endpapers small tidemark to the rear endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. Very Good Minus. 8vo. 21.5 by 16 cm. 8.5 by 6.25 inches. 18 132 14 2 pp. With publisher's list of books in the back. In this first edition apparently only 500 copies were printed! The pages are heavily toned per the norm for the paper stock but clean otherwise. The binding is tight. A few uncut leaves in the advertisement section. FEP with small ornamental bookplate pastedown of "Carroll Atwood Wilson" who was a well-known book collector of his day as well as a lawyer and chief legal counsel to the Guggenheims. The publisher's peach-colored cloth has some blistering on the boards. Along the edges there are long narrow spots in which the color is washed out. The spine has been rebacked with most of the original spine mounted thereon with a small loss of the gilt lettering transpiring. According to Wilde's bibliographer the seventh printing issued in an edition of 2000 copies was the first to use Wilde's full name on the title page. One of the classics of Nineties British literature. Octavo quarter white cloth over mustard-colored boards 31 pages plus blank material. No dust jacket as issued.</p><p>Published before well before Wilde's incarceration and trial and before his best known works such as "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" and "The Importance of Being Earnest". The fairy tales written for his children originally include "The Happy Prince" "The Nightingale and the Rose" "The Selfish Giant" "The Devoted Friend" and "The Remarkable Rocket."</p><p>Evidence of previous tape repair on spine exterior and front and rear boards with chipping and loss on spine. Interior tape repair on inner hinge and evidence of what appears to be a hastily removed book plate on front pastedown. Light soot or dirt smudging on portion of title page. Interior pages are good.
