1898004339London: Leonard Smithers 1898. Wilde used his prisoner's number as his nom de plume for the early printings. This is a Very Good copy of the "Fourth Edition" Printing. Tan and cream-coloured binding with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 31 pages text printed only on the recto. There is a contemporary 22 May 1898 previous-owner signature only three letters on the front free endpaper. There is a tiny bookseller label Brentano's Paris on the rear paste-down. The paste-downs and free endpapers are typically tanned. The corners are bumped; surfaces soiled; and there is a crease on the rear cover. The spine has darkened but the lettering remains readable. Within this rather used-looking exterior the textblock is wonderfully fresh and bright. A solid copy of this rare edition. Fourth Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First published in 1898 anonymously under Wilde's Prisoner identification number this is a copy of the Seventh Printing which was the first to identify him by name. This copy also states "Entered at the Library of Congress Washington U.S.A." indicating an American issue; a bit uncommon thus. Ochre cloth binding with gilt lettering on a linen spine. Clean text; 31 pages. This is a Very Good copy but there are some issues. The corners are bumped; there is a spot on the front cover and a few stains on the rear. Some cracking to the hingesgive it a shaken feel. Also there is a long inscription in Latin also done into English on the FFEP and a signature on the Dedication Page. Publisher's original pale salmon binding with gilt leaf stamping to panels. 152 pages. This copy is about VG with the usual slight fading to the gilt leaf. Boards clean and tidy with no noteworthy issues. There is a book-plate to the front paste-down of "Richard Buckle". No previous owner inscriptions. The spine has been sympathetically and skilfully re-backed in brown morocco with the title and author in gilt with leaf stamps blind-stamped in three places. This copy was part of the standard issue in cloth; a further 100 signed large paper copies and 12 signed copies on japon were produced. Wilde's last play opened to great acclaim on Valentine's Day 1895 but was withdrawn after Wilde's failed libel suit against Lord Queensbury led to his arrest in April of that year. The play was not published in book form until February 1899 after Wilde's release from prison. Quarto 210 x 155 mm. Two weeks later he received a card at his club accusing him of sodomy to which he responded with an ill-judged libel lawsuit that led to his downfall and imprisonment. By the time this book was published by Leonard Smithers one of his few remaining friends Wilde was dying in Paris his health broken by Reading Gaol. There are now statues to him in London and Dublin.
