1888PB-0034<p>Signed first edition of Oscar Wilde's incredibly scarce "The Happy Prince and Other Tales." David Nutt publisher. Ballantyne Press. Quarto handmade paper. Original boards in Japanese vellum. Limited edition number 14 of 75 signed by both Oscar Wilde and publisher David Nutt. Publication date: 1888. Stunning illustrations: front cover design in red ink by Jacob Hood as well as head and tailpiece vignettes. Plates by Walter Crane. No dust jacket as issued.</p><p>Published before well before Wilde's incarceration and trial and before his best known works such as "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" and "The Importance of Being Earnest". The fairy tales written for his children originally include "The Happy Prince" "The Nightingale and the Rose" "The Selfish Giant" "The Devoted Friend" and "The Remarkable Rocket."</p><p>Evidence of previous tape repair on spine exterior and front and rear boards with chipping and loss on spine. Interior tape repair on inner hinge and evidence of what appears to be a hastily removed book plate on front pastedown. Light soot or dirt smudging on portion of title page. Interior pages are good. This volume is scarce in any condition but remains an excellent candidate for rebinding or external repairs and is priced accordingly. More photos available on request.</p> David Nutt hardcover

Printed by William Morris. Bound in publisher's original by J. & J. Leighton with silk ties supplied by Morris & Co. with gilt titles to spine. One of 300 at four guineas paper copies plus 10 at twenty guineas on vellum. Printed on fine hand-made Batchelor with the first versions of the Primrose watermark paper with yapped edges. Uncut deckled edges. Colophon and the large floral printer's device designed by Morris no. 2. i-ii iii-xiv 1 2-455 456 pp. <p>Printed in black and red throughout with the Golden type designed by Morris for his press. Head-title speakers' names and shoulder- and footnotes in red. One full-page and two three-quarter-page woodcut borders 8 and 8a along with numerous 10- 6- and 3-line initials all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.<p>Tells the tale of Sidonia von Borcke the Pomeranian noblewoman who was tried and executed for witchcraft in 1620. Lady Wilde's translation was 1st published in 1849. Morris wrote that "Sidonia was based more or less on fact concerning the Witch Fever that afflicted Northern Europe during the latter half of the 15th and 1st half of the 16th centuries and was a great favorite with the more literary part of the pre-Raphaelite artists who include William Morris and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones . D.G. Rossetti in particular was an enthusiastic admirer." In early 1892 Aubrey Beardsley produced a frontispiece drawing of Sidonia. Morris's rejection of the illustration caused great indignation in Beardsley. Forman pp. 168 & 220. Peterson A19 & 51. <p>Most copies were bound in original limp vellum with silk ties but according to Peterson: "Cockerell instructed Leighton to bind thirty copies in 'half Holland uniform with THE GOLDEN LEGEND' and these were later donated to British and American libraries." <p>Covers somewhat marked and warped. Text block otherwise unmarked featuring original literary prose poetry illustrations by Walter Crane John Dinsdale W. Weekes F. Goodall Mrs Houghton and more and music submitted by prominent artists and writers of the Victorian era plus c.65 pp. of contemporary advertisements to the rear. Laid in is a contemporary Bank Order for donations. Edited by J.S. Wood the hospital's secretary at the time. Printed by George Falkener & Sons Art printers. A scarce and most visually appealing piece of Victorian social history. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase. <p>Near Fine with slight lean to binding light soilingto boards. Bookplate of business man Chauncey Lawrence Williams at front pastedown along with an inscription from the former owner and giftee below dated March 8 1934. Williams was publishing partner of W. Irving Way of Way and Williams who published L. Frank Baum's first literary venture Mother Goose in Prose 1897 Additionally he commissioned a 28-year-old Frank Lloyd Wright to build his home in River Forest Illinois. Williams' funeral service program is laid-in at front offsetting from previously laid-in papers at front endsheets with remnants of former auction record at front free endpaper. <p>Wilde's poignant poem a reflective narrative calling for prison reform and critique of Victorian-era justice systems. Written in exile and printed anonymously under his identification number "C. 3. 3." issued to him at Reading prison during his two year imprisonment for gross indecency with his lover Lord Alfred Douglas.The scarcest and most desirable edition of the author's widely lauded and instantly successful protest poem which serves as a deeply personal lament and a powerful testament to his time in prison. Original quarter cream cloth spine lettered in gilt fawn cloth boards. Edges untrimmed. Grubby and stained extremities bruised and worn white stains to leading edges. Edges and endpapers toned and scantly foxed. Emmeline Garnett's sober ex libris to ffep plus inscription above in blue ink: "Emmeline Garnett/ July 1946/ St. Leonards". Else clean and bright. A robust copy of the last authorised edition published by Smithers; one of 2000 copies. Very good Composed during Wilde's exile in Bernavel-le-Grand with Robbie Ross following his two-year incarceration for gross indecency under the Labouchere Amendment Act and first published under his prison cell number at Reading 'C.3.3'. The popularity of Wilde's ballad afforded him a small income for the rest of his life having been forced to admit bankruptcy whilst imprisoned. Emmeline Garnett 1924-2022 was a "teacher author and historian par excellence" who wrote extensively about Lancashire including John Marsden's Will: The Hornby Castle Dispute 1780-1840 and Juvenile Offenders in Victorian Lancashire: W.
