19136026<p><strong>First edition of this translation. First separate Russian edition of Wilde's 'Aphorisms'.</strong></p><p>The first Russian translation of Wilde's aphorisms was published in 1905 the same year as the original edition. It was prepared by Ekaterina Andreeva the second wife of the symbolist poet Konstantin Balmont. In 1908 Wilde's aphorisms were published in the magazine '<em>Novyi zhurnal literatury iskusstva I nauki'</em> 'New Journal of Literature Art and Science'; #1–4. The following year they were included in Wilde's 'Collection of Works' vol. 7. Additionally another translation of the aphorisms was issued in the magazine '<em>Novoe slovo</em>" 'New Word'. <br />This translation was made by a military officer and duke <strong>Dmitriy Viazemskii</strong> 1884–1917 who was also a vowel of the St. Petersburg City Duma. This was likely Viazemskii's only experience with translation. Unfortunately he met a tragic end when he was killed by a stray bullet during the February Revolution.</p><p>Roznatovskaia. # 479 mistakenly dated — 1912; described not de visu.</p><p><strong>Very rare edition.</strong> We couldn't trace any copy of this edition in the USA or European libraries via OCLC.</p> [tip. ‘Sirius’] hardcover

The student-authors were motivated by "an honest dislike for Dorian Gray Salome The Yellow Book and the whole of the erotic lack-a-daisical opium-cigarette literature of the day". 1902140214Washington: Snohomish 1902. First edition of Wilde's classic Hellenic poem. Octavo original boards illustrated with engravings and hand painted initials embellished in gilt frontispiece by John Dennis Clancy. In very good condition. Wilde’s “theme is not as is often supposed art’s divorce from life but its inescapable arraignment by experience. His creative works almost always end in unmasking. The hand that adjusts the green carnation suddenly shakes an admonitory finger. While the ultimate virtue in Wilde’s essays is in make-believe the denouement of his dramas and narratives is that masks have to go. We must acknowledge what we are. Wilde at least was keen to do so. Though he offered himself as the apostle of pleasure his created world contains much pain†Ellmann xvi. Snohomish hardcover

1904170766Moscow: Knigoizdatel'stvo Skorpion 1904. Each man kills the thing he loves First Russian edition first printing of this translation by Konstantin Bal'mont 1867-1942 one of the most significant Symbolists of Russia's "Silver Age" of poetry with the original illustrated wrappers by Modest Durnov 1867-1928. Bal'mont grew up on his family estate to the north-east of Moscow and demonstrated a flair for writing and languages from childhood. His 1901 collection of poems Burning Buildings Goryashchie zdaniya made him into a leading figure in the Russian Symbolist movement. He also translated Walt Whitman into Russian. Durnov is perhaps best known as an architect. His unrealised designs for Moscow's Aumont Omon Theatre included styling the entrance as the open maw of a dragon into which the public would pass. He appears to have met Wilde on a trip to London and the latter became his favourite author. In addition to executing the portrait which graces the wrappers Durnov also illustrated the 1906 Russian edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Sergei Polyakov established Skorpion in 1899 and it quickly became a unifying force in Russian Symbolism publishing poets such as Gumilev and Belyi. It also focused on publishing translations including the work of Ibsen and Poe. Bal'mont and Durnov were both heavily involved in the house from the time of its conception. Octavo 184 x 120 mm. With 6 pages of publisher's advertisements. Uncut in the original illustrated wrappers by Modest Durnov. Bookseller's stamp and inscription to rear wrapper. Some soiling to the wrappers tears to spine some spotting and light toning to the leaves. A very good copy considering its fragility. Roznatovskaia 260. unknown

1898181391Paris: Société du Mercure de France 1898. Inscribed to a literary batailleur First edition in French number 1 of 12 copies on Holland paper inscribed by the author on the justification de tirage page: "a mon ami Robert Scheffer Oscar Wilde". Signed or inscribed copies of this edition are rare: we trace only two others in auction records. A French poet and short story writer Scheffer 1864-1926 is best remembered for his "contes rapides" or "quick tales" and for his combative style both as a literary critic and as a duellist. He took Wilde to the Folies Bergère on 10 May 1898 and presented him with a copy of his poetry collection La Chanson de Néos affectionately inscribed to the "grand poète". In 1909 Scheffer edited the short-lived gay magazine Akademos. Wilde wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol while exiled in France and originally published the work in Britain earlier the same year under the pseudonym "C.3.3." the number of his cell. He took a particular interest in this edition discussing the format type binding and other details with his translator Henry-David Davray 1873-1944. Wilde was intimately involved in the translation and Davray remembered how "Every word was weighed every term was discussed every sentence was read reread scanned with all possible intonations". Provenance: Samuel Pozzi 1846-1918 the French surgeon and pioneer gynecologist and subject of a portrait by John Singer Sargent with his bookplate. Octavo 183 x 121 mm. Text printed in French and English. Contemporary three-quarter green waxed paper spine lettered and ruled in gilt marbled sides and endpapers top edge red others untrimmed original wrappers bound in red and yellow silk bookmarker. Superficial split and small abrasion to front joint contents toned but clean. A very good copy. Not in Mason. unknown
