2018BIBHB0004744262018. Hardcover. New. ABOUT THE BOOK: A Gothic and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde was first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. But it offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers. In response Wilde aggressively defended his novel. The longer and revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray published in book form in 1891 featured an aphoristic prefacea defence of the artist's rights and of art for art's sake. The content style and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own right as a literary and artistic manifesto. The novel an archetypal tale of a young man who purchases eternal youth at the expense of his soul was a romantic exposition of Wilde's own Aestheticism. The novel became a classic of English literature and was adapted into a number of films most notably a 1945 version that earned multiple Academy Award nominations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Wilde was an AngloIrish novelist playwright poet and critic and a celebrity in late 19th century London. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father was a successful surgeon and his mother a writer and literary hostess. Wilde was educated at Trinity College Dublin and Magdalen College Oxford. After graduating from Oxford University he lectured as a poet art critic and a leading proponent of the principles of aestheticism. As a dramatist many of Wilde's plays were well received including his satirical comedies. His output was diverse. His greatest talent was for writing plays and he produced a string of extremely popular comedies. On May 29 1884 Wilde married a wealthy Englishwoman named Constance Lloyd. They had two sons: Cyril born in 1885 and Vyvyan born in 1886. More than a century after his death Wilde is still better remembered for his witty imaginative and undeniably beautiful works. The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde’s only full-length novel is the enduringly eerie story of a naïve and irresistible young man lured by decadent Lord Henry Wotton into a life of depravity. Though Dorian is steeped in sin his face remains perfect unlined as years pass—while only his portrait locked away reveals the blackness of his soul. This timeless tale of Gothic horror and fable reveling in the unabashed hedonism and cynical wit of its characters epitomizes Wilde’s literary revolt against the proprieties of the Victorian era. Sharing this volume with The Picture of Dorian Gray are Wilde’s clever and sophisticated story “Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime†and two of his delicate fairy tales “The Happy Prince†and “The Birthday of the Infanta.â€With an Introduction by Gary Schnidgalland an Afterword by Peter Raby
Signet paperback

Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray his dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy who remains forever unchanged—petulant hedonistic vain and amoral—while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years has been horrifying enchanting obsessing even corrupting readers for more than a hundred years. Taking the reader in and out of London drawing rooms to the heights of aestheticism and to the depths of decadence The Picture of Dorian Gray is not only a melodrama about moral corruption. Laced with bon mots and vivid depictions of upper-class refinement it is also a fascinating look at the milieu of Wilde’s fin-de-siècle world and a manifesto of the creed “Art for Art’s Sake.†The ever-quotable Wilde who once delighted London with his scintillating plays scandalized readers with this his only novel. Upon publication Dorian was condemned as dangerous poisonous stupid vulgar and immoral and Wilde as a “driveling pedant.†The novel in fact was used against Wilde at his much-publicized trials for “gross indecency†which led to his imprisonment and exile on the European continent. Even so The Picture of Dorian Gray firmly established Wilde as one of the great voices of the Aesthetic movement and endures as a classic that is as timeless as its hero.
Barnes & Noble Classics hardcover
