Though the story has a melodramatic end its very horror induces what Coleridge called "that willing suspension of disbelief which constitutes poetic faith." In an eerie way the story reflects its author's own bizarre career as if in a distorting and prophetic mirror. A wonderful story and brilliant as any of the witty repartee in Wilde's plays.
