It is based on a theory, originated by Thomas Tyrwhitt, that the Sonnets were addressed to one Willie Hughes, portrayed in the story as a boy actor who specialized in playing women in Shakespeare's company. This theory depends on the assumption that the dedicatee is also the Fair Youth who is the subject of most of the poems. The only evidence for this theory is a number of sonnets (such as Sonnet 20) that make puns on the words 'Will' and 'Hues." - Wiki. br. Quando Oscar Wilde fu processato sapeva di infrangere la legge, ma sapeva anche di essere dalla parte del giusto, dell'amore. Era indecente, certo: ma cos'è l'indecenza? Per rispondere a questa domanda Wilde torna oggi sul banco degli imputati di un processo immaginario per sottoporci con forza una riflessione: esistono valori universali, come l'amore, che possano essere postulati come superiori alla voce della legge?

Una volta, si dice, Oscar Wilde rifiutò un medicinale per via del suo colore «marrone sporco»: per convincerlo a curarsi, il farmacista dovette sostituirlo con un flacone di bellissimo liquido «rosso-rosa» e pastiglie che «splendevano come l'oro». Un'altra volta, agli amici preoccupati per il suo pallore mattutino rivelò, esausto: «Il fatto è che ieri ho colto una primula in giardino, dopo stava così male che ho dovuto passare la notte sveglio al suo capezzale». Il più classico dei problemi per un biografo è trovarsi con poco materiale di partenza. Ma esiste un altro, speculare problema: averne fin troppo. Così è per Wilde, di cui già in vita si moltiplicavano aneddoti, battute, aforismi, fanfaronate, miti e leggende: riverberavano dalle colonne dei giornali al cicaleccio dei circoli letterari, si amplificavano di bocca in bocca in una gara a chi la sparava più grossa, gara che spesso era vinta da Oscar stesso, suo primo mitologo e ufficio stampa, creatore del personaggio che si trovava a impersonare ogni giorno, fino a restarne forse imprigionato. Un paradosso? Certo, ma per chi aveva eletto il paradosso a stile e l'ironia ad arma non restava che vivere una vita all'altezza: genio della commedia, si ostinava a scrivere tragedie; dandy di natali aristocratici, si dichiarava a favore di un individualismo "socialista"; dissacratore di ogni autorità e norma morale, si appellò alla legge per proteggere la relazione con Lord Alfred Douglas, dando così inizio al processo che avrebbe decretato la sua rovina; mattatore dei più eleganti salotti, precursore del futuro culto della celebrità, morì solo e dimenticato - al funerale si presentò appena una manciata di persone. A lungo i biografi sono rimasti vittima di questo incantesimo: non riuscendo a districare in lui la vita dall'opera, anche perché in un'opera d'arte suprema aveva trasformato la vita stessa, hanno schiacciato l'una sull'altra, confondendo i piani e faticando a restituirci la verità dei fatti. Riportando alla luce nuovi documenti, tra lettere inedite e atti del processo, Matthew Sturgis penetra nella complessità romanzesca del tardo Ottocento attraverso una delle sue personalità più geniali e discusse.
