This set comprises three richly illustrated artistic studies two of which examine the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the third of which offers a detailed religious history of Jesus Christ and Christian art. Each bound in the publisher's red decorative cloth. Each volume is illustrated throughout the text with engravings as well as a selection of coloured plates. With nineteen plates to 'Les Arts' fifteen plates to 'Moeurs' and sixteen plates to 'Jesus Christ'. Collated complete. Depicting costumes and clothing from the Middle Ages including ornate knight armor for both men and horses female dresses court jesters and more. Lacroix was a French author and journalist. He is known best by his pseudonym P.L. Jacob bibliophile or Bibliophile Jacob. 'Jesus-Christ' by Louis Veuillot with a study of Christian art by E. Cartier. First edition 1875. Exploring religious monuments of art from the Catacombs to present day. Veuillot was a French journalist and author who helped to popularise ultramontanism a movement advocating absolute papal supremacy. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally with water damage to the boards of 'Jesus Christ'. With rubbing to the extremities and darkening to the spines. Hinges are starting but firm. Tear to the spine head cloth of 'Les Arts'. Front joint of 'Moeurs Usages' cracked with spine leather lifting. Bookplate of one T & M. Morison to the front pastedowns of 'Les Arts' and 'Moeurs' and bookplate of the Artists' Society of Landham Chambers to 'Jesus Christ'. Internally firmly bound.
