In 440 engravings and 15 beautifully colored lithographs by the German lithographer Franz Kellerhoven 1814-1872 Lacroix shows everything from dancing and commerce to professions and finances knights in armor jesters ethnic groups dress and court proceedings bizarre happenings executions torture etc. An exhaustive and fascinating work particularly for its extraordinary assemblage of prints and illustrations.<br /><br />Paul Lacroix 1806-1884 author and journalist was a prolific writer on a great variety of subjects including history particularly that of the Renaissance and its manners customs and dress and everything from culture to prostitution and libraries and books.<br /><br />This book belonged to Wilhelmina Duchess of Cleveland Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Powlett 1819-1901 and bears her 1901 bookplate as well as her signature. She was the mother of Queen Victoria's Prime Minister Archibald Primrose 5th Earl of Rosebery a maid of honor at Victoria's coronation and a bridesmaid at her wedding to Prince Albert.
