Edited and contributed to by the prolific French author Paul Lacroix best known as "Bibliophile Jacob" this lovely collection of short stories poems and meditations by Lacroix Balzac Émile Délerot Charles Nodier et al. is illustrated with 22 large steel engravings done by J.C. Armytage W. Greatbach J.B. Allen J.T. Willmore F. Joubert and others after designs by artists including Turner Webster etc. Contemporary quarter morocco over paper-covered sides spine with gilt-stamped title; binding lightly rubbed over sides and extremities. Front pastedown with small armorial bookplate. Front free endpaper and first few leaves separated. Occasional faint pencilled vocabulary annotations in English. In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards bound by Thierry. Externally smart. Spine is faded. Light rubbing to the extremities and very light to the boards. Jean de la Fontain was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. In quarter leather with marbled boards. Externally generally lovely with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Previous owner inscription to the page after the front free endpaper. Minor brownspotting otherwise internally nice and clean. An excellent copy. <br/><br/><em>Rare first edition. An early work by the renowned author Paul Lacroix 1807-1884 who was famous for his several important historical works and his numerous works of bibliographical contents regarding which he can be said to have continued the tradition of Nodier. He wrote a number of historical novels which were very popular at the time and of which Les Deux Fous is considered one of the best. They were reprinted numerous times and were translated into several languages; -most of them deal with the Middle Ages and the Renaissance a period not commonly investigated at that time. Most of his works are published under pseudonym because of which he is now best known under the name of "Bibliophile Jacob". Aged 28 he was awarded the cross of the "Légion d'Honneur" for his work on the history of the 16th century and 1842 he founded "L'Alliance des Arts" together with M. Thoré. Carteret 2;14.
