Religious orders including the Franciscans and Dominicans are addressed alongside topics like the Edict of Nantes and Attila's incursions. All plates are present. Binding remains tight plates clean and edges bright. This 19th-century French illustrated work is difficult to locate in comparable condition. Illustrated with a frontispiece thirty-one plates and numerous in-text engravings. Undated dated from Copac from copies held at the Sheffield Hallam University. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a very small amount of the spine lifting to the head of the front joint. The strikingly illustrated first Dore edition of Pierre Dupont's depiction of The Wandering Jew with twelve plates from Gustave Dore. A first edition thus being the first edition of this work with Dore's illustrations. Collated complete with twelve plates. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth. This work is a poem on the legend with the prologue and epilogue by Pierre Dupont. With the Compliant and Beranger's Ballad set to music with the pianoforte accompaniment written by Ernest Dore present at the start of this work. Translated into English with critical remarks by George W Thornbury with a bibliographical notice to this work by Paul Lacroix.Gustave Dore was a prolific printmaker artist and illustrator known primarily for his wood engravings. He had a very successful illustrated Bible which earned him a major exhibition in London which later lead to the foundation of the Dore Gallery in Bond Street. Dore depicts the legend of the Wandering Jew's immortal journey from the crucifixion of Christ to Judgement Day. The beautiful monochrome artwork is filled with Dore's usual dramatic style constructed with biblical epic conflict woven into each stroke displaying this terrible legend in all its glory. With sweeping powerful illustrations befitting the legend Gustave Dore's collected work is enchantingly presented in this extremely scarce volume. With the bookplate of Wilfred Francis Southall. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth. Externally worn with marking and damp staining to the cloth. Front board has detached with the loss and lifting to the backstrip. Cloth to rear board is cockled. Rear board is tender with cords visible. Lacking front free endpaper. Bookplate to front paste down. Internally binding is tender with the textblock split in a couple of places. Half title detached but present. Pages are bright with light scattered spotting and a few handling marks including to plate extremities. Small tear to p81 not affecting text. Good Only Addey and Co. hardcover
