No. 89 of 250 special copies octavo size 189 pp. Clara Tice 1888-1973 avante-garde illustrator and artist spent most of her life in New York City; due to her provocative art she was seen as representative of bohemian Greenwich Village. Her fame actually increased when the Society for the Suppression of Vice remember this was 1915 tried to confiscate her art; this naturally drew more attention to her art which was thereafter published in works such as Vanity Fair. Looking at the etchings in this book might cause comment even today; they lavishly celebrate the feminine figure and are rampant with sexual innuendo. <br/><br/>This one of the 250 special edition copies bound in full morocco by Whitman Bennett N.Y. and printed on special deckle-edge Pannekoek paper. The text according to the title page an exact copy of the "Earliest English Text Printed in Holland by Joh. It is significant because it was the first systematic study of the subject. Infused with the spirit of the Enlightenment its advocacy of crime prevention and the abolition of torture and capital punishment marked a significant advance in criminological thought which had changed little since the Middle Ages. It had a profound influence on the development of criminal law. It was especially influential among American thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson who wished to use Beccaria to reform the system of criminal law Americans inherited from England. Semiramis ninth-century queen of Assyria present-day Iraq was until the early twentieth century a figure of legend that had been well-established as of the classical period: begotten of the fish-goddess Atargatis and fed by doves until her rescue by a royal shepherd; bride of general Onnes and successor to his power and eventually to the throne of Assyria; founder of Babylon and every other monument in the region; long-lived brave wise and sexually potent she was turned into a dove at her death and worshipped subsequently as a surrogate of the Assyrian fertility goddess Astarte. Modern archaeological research by Lehman-Haupt and others has largely replaced legend with history but the legend was still alive and well in Voltaire's time. She was a female personification of all that was gaudy and glorious in pre-Christian antiquity and she furnished good material for this tragedy Voltaire's preference in drama composed in 1748 a year after his conte philosophique ZADIG. Voltaire's play has probably had more continuing vitality as the foundation of the libretto of the Rossini opera "Semiramide" 1823 widely considered as one of the best and last operas in the Baroque style. A prolific author of fiction and poetry Young was a striking example of an independent professional female writer of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Writing "for a maintenance" as she euphemistically puts it Young encapsulates the financial hardship and open hostility that greeted female authors of the time especially those who were fully reliant on their literary output. Taken from a letter to the Royal Literary Fund 28 March 1808 by Ms. Young "melange which was thrown together at the express desire of my Publisher and I hope Voltaire has not suffer'd by my choice of selection and omissions." The Dictionnaire was both extremely popular and widely censored making such an early first edition as this one quite uncommon. It was a lifelong project for Voltaire and represents the culmination of his views on Christianity God morality justice and other subjects. In very good condition. Leather scuffed and and Ex-Library stamp to the title page. Mild toning to pages but otherwise clean and textblock tight. In French. <br/><br/>The Enlightenment saw the creation of a new way of structuring information in books: alphabetization. Having witnessed first-hand the popularity and many advantages of this form Voltaire set to work on his own dictionary with some modifications. Unlike the lengthy-- and thus expensive-- compendiums of his peers Voltaire's Dictionnaire would be affordable and fit in one's pocket. "Revolutionary material" Voltaire commented "must be small enough for people to carry with them." The Dictionnaire espouses tolerance freedom of the press and decries the Catholic Church's injustices. While the Dictionnaire was immensely popular and sold out many times in Voltaire's lifetime it was also censored in many countries including Switzerland Geneva and France where this copy was printed. In these countries all available editions of the book were collected and burned in the town square. Voltaire who remained an anonymous author was repeatedly asked if he minded that the Dictionnaire was being burned but he calmly replied that he had no reason to be upset. unknown books
