In the original French.The first edition of this work to be acknowledged by Voltaire following several pirated editions which had been published from 1755 onwards. A number of additions and corrections were made to this edition with the poem being preceded by the "Preface of Don Apuleius Risorius Benedictine" composed for this edition and with the new cantos: VIII IX XVI XVII and XVIII while canto XX corresponding to the old canto of the donkey has been almost entirely redone and the canto of Corisandre and the verses of the Epilogue are deleted. This issue is famous too for the series of 21 exquisite copper-plate engravings.' Brady could find nothing to substantiate the claim that the 21st Canto was rare. Then as now La Pucelle d'Orleans was Voltaire's most consumed work so it is not surprising to find this volume detached from the its 39 companions. Voltaire's greatest poem but not the one you read in school. With Ariosto in mind Voltaire rewrote the Joan of Arc story with all the wit and critical distance of an 18th-century libertine. The result is that France's sainted woman warrior becomes the vehicle for an intelligent and licentious burlesque.
