Also various engravers. An interesting collection of copper engraved plates relating to Voltaire and these mostly illustrations from his dramatic works including "Henriade" the most represented of the works and as so happens one of the very few that occasionally still known by non-Voltaire scholars and that might enjoy a production in the modern era "Tancrede" "La Princesse de Navarre" "L'Enfant Prodigue" "Socrate" "L'Orpheline de Chine" "Horace" "Nanine" "La Prude" "Semiramis" "Le Duc de Foix" etc. We believe these are without exception also copper engravings issued during Voltaire's lifetime and all of them date to the 18th Century. The plates we stress were not issued as the suite here; this suite was created later probably by or on behalf of the bibliophile whose decorative bookplate is mounted in the front -- Charles MacAllister Wilcox 1870 - 1932 who was a successful Denver business executive. all done during Voltaire's lifetime. The dramatic works include Bound by Riviere & Son in full red morocco gilt ruling and decoration raised bands turn-ins. 8vo. 25 by 19.5 cm. 50 plates including frontis the plates done by various artists and engravers but Hubert Gravelot is by far the most represented of the artists with 43 of the engravings based on his artwork. Six of the plates are portrait plates one of Voltaire as to be expected the others of Louis XIV and XV monarchs during Voltaire's lifetime Charles XII and Peter the Great monarchs Voltaire wrote biographies of and of Gravelot. This makes the point to us that the Suite of Plates is as much a tribute to Gravelot's artistry as to Voltaire his inspiration. And his artwork is vivid often seething with activity and movement. Not only is he without peer among Baroque illustrators but also the perfect choice to capture the spirit of a dramatic work. The raised bands and edges of the binding have some rubbing. Offsetting of the turn-ins onto the FEPs which we and most will find rather attractive. A few of the plates have an obvious jagged crease mark in their lower portion. Some light scattered soiling including a fox mark here and there. unknown

Pagination: 6 i 1 372 4 pp. Front board loose rear hinge cracked but board still attached but very strained. Scuffing and rubbing to binding with some discolouration. Bumped and torn corners. Some loss to head and tail headband exposed and in danger of coming loose no tailband. Some cracking to leather on spine. Page edges hued red some scuffing and marking especially to upper edges. Marbled endpapers some loss to bottom outer corner of marbled surface of front free endpaper. Extensive foxing to page surfaces throughout though no apparent underlining marginalia etc. See pictures for further information. Stated Second Edition Corrected the original edition in the original French having been published the year prior and includes "A New and Correct Map of Sweden" in fold-out up-front two-panel and quite fine in clarity and sharpness. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy but complete and still pretty sturdy. Bound in a short octavo hardcover format 7 3/4" x 5" tall and wide respectively. Joints cracked stitches showing but holding tips and edges scuffed but still stands solidly on its own on the shelf. Fine black-and-white engraving of the 12th King Charles of Sweden at frontis by Vandergucht and a lovely publisher device opposite at title page. Original calf binding scaling but intact. Five raised bands to spine chipping to spine head. Text remarkably free of foxing; interior crisp and white and surprisingly bright. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box oatmeal sailcloth with oblong brown leather label affixed neatly to front panel gilt title stamped there. Contains signature "Chr. Wren Junr. 1737" on front endpaper then also inside front flap and below first signature all in pen not yet authenticated signature of the architect's son who died in 1747. Sir Christopher Wren 30 October 1632 - 8 March 1723 the noted influential English architect astronomer mathematician and physicist was best known for having conceived and had built St. Paul's Cathedral but also according to his Wikipedia entry "the Royal Hospital Chelsea the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich and the south front of Hampton Court Palace." He was also the father of the perhaps former owner of the present volume Christopher Wren Jr. The Senior Wren's career having been established in full by 1669 he in that year at age 37 married his childhood neighbor "the 33-year-old Faith Coghill daughter of Sir John Coghill of Bletchingdon" and who for him bore two children "Gilbert born October 1672 who suffered from convulsions and died at about 18 months old and Christopher born February 1675. The younger Christopher was trained by his father to be an architect. It was this Christopher that supervised the topping out ceremony of St Paul's in 1710 and wrote the famous Parentalia or Memoirs of the family of the Wrens." Were it authentic the signature here would put him as having been roughly 62 years of age at signing 1675–1747; Christopher Wren Jr. "of Wroxall Abbey Warwickshire was a Member of Parliament" Wikipedia. xi 2 2-371 pp. All in an attractive early edition of an important work and perhaps with exceeding provenance.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Interestingly he never elected to publish his complete copy of the work instead publishing selected parts of it in his 'Collection Complete des Oeuvres de Voltaire'.Voltaire 1694-1778 was a French writer and historian active during the Enlightenment. He was a proponent of freedom of speech and outspoken against Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church. He was an especially prolific writer with his works spanning poetry novels essays histories and plays across over two thousand books and pamphlets. He was also extremely influential on historiography.Published in 1756 this edition was published by the manuscript thieves with no publisher or place of publication stated.A fascinating work. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the spine and a chip to the head of the spine. Extremities are a little bumped. Voltaire was becoming a major correspondent on European affairs and published Historie de la guerre de 1741 and then the work was translated into English in 1756. ESTC 137642 in their note specifically says "not a reissue of the 1st edition". The first edition which had 292 pages had several errors hence the corrected edition in the same year. Bound in full contemporary calf handsomely rebacked to style ruled and lettered in gilt corners worn edges rubbed some off-setting from binding glue to first and last few leaves but only margins not affecting text. No foxing names or bookplates. A very nice copy. Printed for J. Nourse unknown
