Written by Francois-Marie Arouet known by his nom de plume Voltaire a French Enlightenment writer philosopher satirist and historian famous for his wit. Following the Reverend Mr. Yorick on a picaresque journey through France narrated from a sentimental point of view. Yorick is a character from Sterne's bestselling previous novel Tristram Shandy who also serves as Sterne's alter ego. Written by Laurence Sterne an Anglo-Irish novelist and Anglican cleric best known for his comic novels. Dated from the British Library. Previously held in the library of Captain Sir Henry Duncan KCH a prominent Royal Navy officer of the early nineteenth century operating with great success against French and Italian shipping and shore fortifications in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars. Bound in full tree calf. Externally smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with light loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Minor age toning to the extremities with the previous owner's bookplate and contemporary ink inscriptions to the front pastedown. Good C. It was printed on five different types of paper and only the deluxe editions such as ours on laid paper feature engravings. These are naturally the most sought-after and rarest copies. Binding in full painted sheep decorated with a honeycomb motif smooth spine tooled with gilt fleurons fillets and compartments light beige calf lettering and volume pieces gilt chain-roll border on covers marbled endpapers gilt roll on edges all edges marbled contemporary binding.
