First Edition of Voltairiana selected and translated by Mary Julia Young one of Dale Spender's 'Mothers of the Novel.' A prolific author of fiction and poetry Young was a striking example of an independent professional female writer of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Writing "for a maintenance" as she euphemistically puts it Young encapsulates the financial hardship and open hostility that greeted female authors of the time especially those who were fully reliant on their literary output. Taken from a letter to the Royal Literary Fund 28 March 1808 by Ms. Young "melange which was thrown together at the express desire of my Publisher and I hope Voltaire has not suffer'd by my choice of selection and omissions." Complete in four volumes. Portrait frontispiece. Page of advertisements at the rear. Very scattered foxing. Wear to the joints extremities and surface of the spines.
