A very scarce limited edition copy with the entire issue of this work limited to 600 copies and the large paper edition limited to 100 copies.Printed on Japanese vellum this is a large paper copy and is number 45/100 inscribed to the edition page.In publisher's original maroon Japanese silk binding. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece an extra set of 'en-tetes' in colour and monochrome 'en-tetes' by Adrien Moreau. This volume holds the English translation of the French satire Candide ou l'Optimisme written by Voltaire a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment first published in 1759.The story follows a young man Candide who lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world.Translated with an introduction by Walter Jerrold. In publisher's original Japanese silk binding. Externally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine with slight loss. Small loss to joints and spine. Mark to rear board. In the original French language.A delightful and uncommon six volume miniature set of celebrated works of French literature housed in the original slip case and with each volume retaining the original paper wraps.Complete in six volumes: 'Varietes' by Berquine; 'Mythologie' by Demoustier; 'Melanges' by Florian; a volume of the work of Millevoye; 'Fables' by Fontaine and 'Poesies' by Voltaire.Each volume illustrated with an engraved title page and one plate. Collated complete.The set was issued in various forms sometime with wrappers of green and pink and sometimes in a variant box rather than slip case.Published by Marcilly who specialised in miniature volumes and printed in small type by Firmin Didot. In the publisher's original paper wraps with marbled paper covered slip case. Each volume lightly age toned to back strip and a touch age toned to perimeters. Small chips to back strips of five volumes. Slip case lacking publisher's original calf back strip with rubbing to board perimeters. All slip case joints holding firm. Internally firmly bound. Extremities are slightly abraded a 3-inch split upper front joint boards yawn somewhat. Within textblock is quite sound; find original blanks faintly toned with flecks of soil v.I foxing to portrait occasional foxing in text v.II frontis heavily foxed some splashy foxing in text. A very good copy pace the split which in no way affects handling. Kneeland an intimate with Robert Dale Owen and Frances Wright was a frequent contributor to their Free Enquirer. In 1831 he moved to Boston and established The Boston Investigator one of the longest lived 1831-1904 freethought publications in the United States See Brown & Stein p. 33; he was tried four times and eventually convicted for his writings in the Dec. 20 1833 issue. He sought to craft a shorter dictionary of articles concerning the Enlightenment that would have a smaller format so people could carry revolutionary ideas in their pockets.<br /> <br /> Around 1870 Edward Trulove the radical publisher and printer of this edition took up publishing Voltaire's dictionary for the humanist cause. He was brought to trial due to his belief in freedom of speech and staunch atheism refusing to swear the Christian oath on the stand.
