At the head of the page the recipient has written: 'Rep. 2o Brumaire. 12. i.e. 25 October 1803' Another of Volney's works 'Ruines of Empires' 1791 was extremely influential particularly in the United States. In 1796 Volney met Thomas Jefferson at Monticello to discuss Jefferson's plan to translate the book into English. Jefferson had completed the greater part of his translation by the time he mounted his 1800 bid for the presidency at which point he handed over the project to Joel Barlow who translated the last four chapters and at Jefferson's request put his name to the whole translation which was published in 1801. The boards are rubbed and worn but remain strong and sturdy. Internally there is light tanning and scattered foxing throughout but there are no other markings or inscriptions and the text is neat and clear. The binding is sound. Paper bright and clean. <br/><br/>Title continues: "Containing The present Natural and Political State of those Countries their Productions Arts Manufactures and Commerce; with Observations on the Manners Customs and Government of the Turks and Arabs." Volney 1757-1820 was a well-travelled learned man. He embarked on a journey to the Near East in late 1782 and spent nearly seven months in Ottoman Egypt. Afterwards he lived for nearly two years in Greater Syria in what is today Lebanon and Israel in order to learn Arabic. He returned to France in 1785 where he spent the following two years compiling his notes and writing these volumes. He continued to travel in later years being expelled from the U.S.A. as a suspected spy in 1797. It seems his life was always an adventure for he narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution. Of interest in these well-preserved volumes is the account given of the Arabic press at the convent of Marhanna vol. 2 pp. 190-191 with a catalogue of books printed there p. 196. On the macabre side is the extensive discussion of diseases prevalent in Egypt including smallpox blindness cutaneous eruptions plague and Neapolitan Disease which seems to be syphilis vol. 1 pp. 240-258. A new translation of the work had just been published and both Jefferson and Volney were not happy with it nor this earlier first edition in English. Constantin Francois de Chasseboeuf comte de Volney was a philosopher historian and politician. A member of the noble Boisgirais family of Anjou France he travelled extensively and wrote about his observations of the people and lands he visited. He spent time in Egypt Lebanon and Palestine "Voyage en Egypte et en Syrie " J 787 and later in Turkey and Russia "Considerations sur la guerre des T urcs et de la Russie " I 788. After the French Revolution he participated in the Estates-G‚n‚ral and Assembl‚e constituante. He later journeyed to the United States where he stayed for three years and came to know Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson translated twenty of twenty-four chapters of Volney's "Les Ruines" "Ruins of Empires " I802. Volney's "Tableau du climat" is his analysis of American politics and laws as well as the physical and cultural geography of the people he studied during his visit. "This work includes a description of the Niagara frontier and a review of French-Canadian enterprise on the Ohio and Mississippi. Black morocco label with gilt title. = Virtually unknown edition of an interesting work in relation to the growth of scientific and historical knowledge by the French philosopher orientalist and historian Constantin François de Chassebuf Comte de Volney 1757-1820 first published in French in 1808 as Recherches nouvelles sur l'histoire ancienne. A first English edition was published in 1819 by Simpkin Marshall in London; this edition however is not dated and is widely different. Its publication is announced in Cobbett's Political Register volume 586 on 6 May 1826. Thomas Davison was a printer of radical works between 1819-1830 and served two years in prison for blasphemous libel. The work deals with various philosophers mythology culture etc. but mainly with Middle Eastern people and persons in particular those of historical importance for instance Moses Herodotus Flavius Josephus etc. Former owners autograph on front flyleaf otherwise a very good clean copy in a nice contemporary-style binding. Apart from the above publication announcement and one doubtful listing in OCLC with an 1830 date we found no records of this edition. hardcover

The Blackmer catalogue says that "Volney's popular and highly-regarded work was the result of three years' travels a good deal of which time was spent in Cairo. His account has never really been surpassed. Volney went to great lengths in preparation which included a year devoted to exercise and self-deprivation and three months learning the language required in a convent in the mountains of Lebanon." Volney 1757-1820 was a learned man a frequent traveller and an important governmental official who was expelled from America as a suspected spy and who narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution. The present bindings obviously are not notable for their decoration but they are wonderful examples of attractively executed flamed calf bindings typical of those making up the bulk of country gentlemen's libraries all over Great Britain. The condition of the present copy is nothing short of extraordinary very nearly capturing the look and feel of the volumes as they would have appeared on their original shelf. Printed for G. G. Smith was the first in the Smith-Marriott Baronetcy. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Smith also served as the High Sheriff of Dorset. Originally published in Paris in 1787 this is the first English Language edition. Completing the title page: Containing the present natural and political state of those countries their productions arts manufactures and commerce; with observations on the manners customs and goverment of the Turks and Arabs. According to Cox this is "one of the most exact and valuable works of the kind ever published . ". Volney served in the Estates-General and was later imprisoned during the reign of terror before gaining favor with Napoleon. His visit to Syria and Egypt was inspired by a love of ancient history and philology. A fascinating Enlightenment-era travel narrative of the Near East beautified by its detailed maps and illustrations. Joints show some wear but the bindings are secure and firm. A bookplate was removed from each free front endpaper with volume one's endpaper showing two small spots of loss. Each endpaper has a small inscription denoting these as first editions. G.G.J. and J. On offer is a super original diary and manuscript relic of a Mississippi man named Volney Fowler consisting of entries for the years 1908 1909 and 1916. Fowler seems to be an Surveyor working with a small company in Natchez Mississippi offering researchers and historians an interesting perspective of life in the Deep South. Throughout the diary and throughout all years of writing Fowler writes of receiving calls from many different people in town to survey various plots of land as well as reports from his boss Forest and a coworker and brother Orrick For example: April 6 1909. While at breakfast at Osceola a phone message came from Foresh for me to return home immediately to survey ____ place for Farrar. So when cars came at Lake Bruen I returned home.I did not wish to leave Osceola on Tuesday and would not have come away if Farrar had not got Mr. Ratcliffe to phone me to come to survey. In between reports of his work in Natchez Fowler writes of day-to-day occurrences and activities such as watching movies he is especially moved by Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith vacationing in Osceola Arkansas. As well Fowler is very interested in astrology and the diary is filled with many instances of astrological movements in the sky: Jupiter enters Leo. Mars enters Leo.; Venus enters Gemini; Venus conj. with moon in Cancer. In addition the verso and recto of the cover are filled with Fowlers writing on the stars and astrological movements in the year 1908. We think she is a trifle better at Sunrise.Dr. Beekman called 8 1/2 clock A.M. About 9 1/2 clock AM it began to appear that end was a matter of short time. Mrs. Baker came and was helpful and so Mr.s. Stamply. About 12 1/2 Clock Winnie began to show that she knew she was losing her best friend - Ida and children arrived after dark.Mamma his wife died at Eleven clock this night.My wifes funeral took place this evening at 4 clock. Our boys brought a lot yesterday in city cemetery. His entries for the year 1909 end after the death of his wife. The book is about 390 pages of which there is writing in 370 or so. The cover is in fair shape. The front cover is almost wholly detached. The spine and front cover show discoloration tears and signs of wear and age. The pages and writing are still in good shape. Fowlers handwriting is easy to read even when slightly faded or written in pencil. There are only a few entries in 1916 at the very beginning of the diary. They stop after the middle of the month in January. The entries for 1909 end after the death of Fowlers wife while the entries for 1908 continue throughout the year. This diary is a very interesting look into the life of a deep south surveyor living through the ups and downs of life. Excerpts of text: January 21 1908. I surveyed 2 lots for Jeter and dix for Hall-Fletcher women - all on Holden Lane - Gus Peale drove one home after dark.; August 14 1908. Race riot in Springfield Ill.; December 30 1908. Orrick says Sleihenrock ____ him to share his office with him - but O has too good an office in ___ to quit it. Sleihenrock thinks Orrick be reelected City Engineer next Monday; January 30 1909. Harry Marks trustee ____ in default of payment by J.C. Jenkins.Spent 5 days this week surveying for Miss Johnston near Church Hill. He reported to her this morn. He found field notes in Fayette which old C. W. Babbitt failed to find. He surveyed to ____ out land he been claiming. Bt. dime tobacco Mon morn. Lasted this eve.
