Dans ce texte adressé aux habitants des campagnes et signé par "les Bourgeois associés pour la défense du droit du Peuple et l'instruction des Paysans" Volney conteste la hiérarchie des classes sociales et réclame notamment une refonte complète du système d'imposition avec la suppression de certaines taxes gabelle aides octrois corvées tailles et une nouvelle constitution. "Volney représente conjugués l'amour du progrès et l'attachement paysan à la terre avec une gravité constante et une sensibilité réelle mais mesurée. Rare édition de Bourg du célèbre oeuvre du philosophe Volney dans laquelle alternent souvenirs personnels philosophie et réflexions. Si le sujet général est un questionnement sur la disparition et la ruine des empires Volney débute son livre par une méditation sur l'effondrement de Palmyre l'ouvrage aborde de multiples thèmes qui lui sont liés : origines des cultes religieux symbolisme culte des astres. Volney se souvenant d'Hérodote ne fait confiance en tant qu'historien qu'aux faits et il interroge les ruines afin qu'elles lui révèlent la ruine d'un empire et d'une cité. "J'irai vivre dans la solitude parmi les ruines; j'interrogerai les monuments anciens sur la sagesse des temps passés ." llustrée de 2 planches dont une dépliante et un frontispice. Vol. 1 Tome Premier is sound and attractive with both maps still crisp and unworn. Vol. 2 Tome Seconde is quite worn binding heavily worn; joints splitting; the folding plate of the Temple at Baalbek is split at one of the folds and has remnants of yellowed tape along that fold to repair the split; Binding is almost completely split between pages 222 and 223. French text. The half-titles were not preserved in these volumes but this set is otherwise complete. This first edition was also published in a seldom seen larger format about 26cm. quarto edition. hardcover
