Half calf 13.5 cm Condition: Boards and corners somewhat scuffed. Some slight foxing Note: The French historian philosopher and orientalist Constantin François de Chassebuf de Volney 1757-1820 is one of the founding fathers of the Black Athena theory. After a trip to the Middle East in 1782 he suggested that the ancient Egyptians were originally black Africans and that the Egyptians of his time were mulats with mixed blood. Volney Some of the central ideas in Les Ruines stirred the imagination of its readers. It predicted the final union of all religions by the recognition of the common truth underlying them all and stated that empires rise if government allows enlightened self-interest to flourish Photographs on request hardcover

Conder. 8vo. Translated from the French of "Les ruines ou Méditation sur les révolutions des empires" by Thomas Conder.

Volney's work which was first published in 1791 argued by analyzing the arc of ancient civilizations that the primacy of equality before the law was necessary to prevent the deterioration of religious and political institutions into tyranny. The work had a profound influence on Thomas Jefferson who translated it beginning in 1796 when Volney visited him at Monticello. A new translation of the work had just been published and both Jefferson and Volney were not happy with it nor this earlier first edition in English. The project went on hold once Jefferson became president and was not published until 1802 in France and 1828 in America. Printed for J. Johnson hardcover

Volney 1757-1820 the French savant undertook a journey to the United States in 1795 where he was accused in 1797 of being a French spy "sent to prepare for the reoccupation of Louisiana by France. He was obliged to return to France in 1798. The results of his travels took form in his Tableau du Climat et du Sol des Etats-Unis 1803" EB-11. Page 186 contains a note from the translator. Both Jefferson and Barlow had translated Volney's Les Ruines ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires published in 1802 in Paris but there's no evidence they had any part in this translation.
