The boards are rubbed and worn but remain strong and sturdy. Internally there is light tanning and scattered foxing throughout but there are no other markings or inscriptions and the text is neat and clear. The binding is sound. Of the many editions of this important work first published in France in 1791 and partly translated by Thomas Jefferson OCLC lists only 1 copy with Frederick Farrah as printer and dates it 1900. This copy is undated but the binding suggests a binding typical of much earlier plus there is an owner name dated Shanghai February 22 '76 which by period script and century could only refer to 1876.
