Andrew Marvell was an English metaphysical poet, satirist and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1678. During the Commonwealth period he was a colleague and friend of John Milton. His poems range from the love-song "To His Coy Mistress", to evocations of an aristocratic country house and garden in "Upon Appleton House" and "The Garden", the political address "An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland", and the later personal and political satires "Flecknoe" and "The Character of Holland". Andrew Marvell (Winestead, 31 marzo 1621, Londra, 16 agosto 1678) è stato un poeta e politico inglese, parlamentarista e figlio di un prete della Chiesa anglicana (anche lui chiamato Andrew Marvell). Scrisse poemi di satira e di pastorale, che fece circolare come manoscritto, e la sua figura di poeta viene spesso associata a quella di John Donne, George Herbert e John Milton (di quest'ultimo fu anche amico e collega). Ebbe una prospettiva complessa della Rivoluzione inglese. Fu un puritano e amico di John Milton, ma fu moderato nella sua politica, e (a differenza di Milton) fu contrario all'esecuzione di Carlo I. Tuttavia, una delle sue poesie più note è un'ode in onore di Oliver Cromwell. Fu più famoso alla sua epoca per le satire, viene ora ricordato per i poemi di amore, specialmente To His Coy Mistress (Alla sua timida amante), in cui esorta la sua amata a non sprecare il tempo. Melchissédec a joué un second violon au Théâtre de Saint-Étienne avant de venir étudier à Paris. Après des cours avec Alkan, Puget, Mocker et Levasseur au Conservatoire de Paris, où il remporte un premier prix en 1865, il fait ses débuts à l'Opéra-Comique de Paris le 16 juillet 1866 dans JOSÉ MARIA de Cohen. Restant à l'Opéra-Comique jusqu'en 1877, le répertoire de Melchissédec comprenait LES ABSENTS, LE PREMIER JOUR DE BONHEUR, LALLA-ROUKH, ROBINSON CRUSOÉ, LES DRAGONS DE VILLARS, LE PRÉ AUX CLERCS, FANTASIO, MIREILLE, RICHARD CŒUR DE LION et LE CAÏD. En 1873, il devint le premier vrai baryton à chanter le rôle-titre de ZAMPA (par opposition à un chanteur à la voix mixte). Melchissédec s'installe à côté du Théâtre Lyrique, chantant dans DIMITRI, LE CAPITAINE FRACASSE et les créations de PAUL ET VIRGINIE et LE TIMBRE D'ARGENT. En 1879, il entre à l'Opéra de Paris et fait ses débuts à Nevers dans LES HUGUENOTS le 17 novembre 1879. Il y composera notamment GUILLAUME TELL, L'AFRICAINE, LA FAVORITE, RIGOLETTO, FAUST et créera des rôles dans LE TRIBUT DE ZAMORA, TABARIN. et LE CID. Après avoir chanté Capulet lors de la première représentation de ROMÉO ET JULIETTE à l'Opéra-Comique en 1873, il a chanté Mercutio lors de son transfert au répertoire de l'Opéra. Melchissédec quitta l'Opéra en 1891. De 1905 à 1912, il devient professeur de déclamation lyrique au Conservatoire de Paris.
