With a memorial bookplate "In Memory of Michael Hariot Huth Walters for his Friend" with the name Betty Menzies written in ink. Elizabeth G.C. Menzies was the rare woman staff photographer at Princeton University whose images decorated the front cover of the <i>Princeton Alumni Weekly</i> for many years and a friend of Michael Heriot Huth Walters. Walters died suddenly. His friends at Princeton and his family owners of the Swan Press compiled a memorial volume of tributes from his classmates. This volume of Stevenson was given in appreciation to each of those contributors. The woodcut frontispiece is "'Drink' Sang the Daughter of Miru." Unpaginated In-8. iv; 36 pages; iv 26 cm. Copy 65 of 250 printed in Baskerville type on hand-made paper. Copy 65 is one of the numbered uncolored copies numbered from 11 to 240. Blue swan decorated paper boards with a white linen backstrip. Review copy edition of 500 copies quarto size 114 pp. signed by Joyce Lancaster Wilson and Adrian Wilson. The Press in Tuscany Alley was one of San Francisco's small private press jewels. Adrian Wilson 1924-1988 was both a book designer and a scholar authoring "The Design of Books" which is regarded as a classic text on book design. As the New York Times stated in his obituary "Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books and became a mentor to younger men and women eager to learn the printer's craft. His many volumes while little-known to the general public are famous among print connoisseurs and many are collector's items." <br/><br/>When Adrian Wilson donated old proofs of "A Child's Garden of Verses" for a work not as of that date printed to the Silverado Museum devoted to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson the founder and curator urged him to publish a limited edition of the verses. Enclosed in a 3/4 green morocco slipcase with folding chemise. Original wrappers 4 issues near fine. Macaire is of interest because it follows hard upon the printing done by Stone & Kimball for the American copyright edition of which only about 12 printed. See #341 of the Beinecke Library catalog of which editor G.L. McKay states ".the earliest separate edition issued by a publisher." McKay references the chap book edition here by noting the dropped '9' from page number '49' of #341 and its subsequent replacement in this chap book edition by a '9' from an incorrect font. See page 49 of the June 1 1895 issue. The inference is near simultaneous printing. George Barr McCutcheon's copies with his bookplate in each issue. Title printed on obverse of page one the text of the Sermon on the inner two-page spread and the final page blank. Beautifully printed letterpress in a Gothic font. Each of the four sections of Stevenson's work is introduced by an illuminated capital with hand-colored foliage. The title runs across the top of both pages in gilt with more flowers lightly colored in pink blue and green. A fine copy. Housed in the publisher's stiff boards printed title pasted onto the upper board. The spine of the portfolio is nearly perished else it is is in very good condition. The copy of William Andrews Clark Jr. with his bookplate on the front pastedown. And with the bookplate of typographer H. L. Doolittle of Pasadena. Scarce Nash item. A very good copy with some fading to the spine extremities a bit rubbed some soiling and a few small stains to the cloth; internally some light scattered foxing rear hinge starting but a tight and sturdy copy free of any repairs or restoration. Kidnapped is a historical fiction novel that is presented as the semi-autobiographical adventure tales of David Balfour whose surname is Stevenson's mother's maiden name. The novel is set in the aftermath of the Scottish Jacobite uprisings and is loosely based around real characters and events. It is considered the sequel to the author's bestseller Treasure Island. . 1888146041888. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1888. 8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition published about six weeks before the London edition. Unlike the English one the American edition is illustrated twelve plates; it was also issued at a higher price in red cloth no precedence. Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883 for serial appearance in "Young Folks" where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared. He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization which prompted Scribner's to publish it in book form which in turn prompted Stevenson's publisher Cassell in London. This is a remarkably near-fine copy which for these fragile wrappers is amazing spine paper slightly darkened but very little of the edge-wear and soil which typically afflict this yellow paper. In our experience the American edition is scarcer than the English one even on this side of the Atlantic -- especially in the yellow wrapper binding. Beinecke 480; Princeton 40 copy 3.
