1920011736San Francisco: Edwin & Robert Grabhorn 1920. 1st Edition Limited. Hardcover. VG-. Grabhorn's 1920 edition of Stevenson's telling of Diogenes different from its 1921 edition. This edition has a different introduction by Hopkins not Vincent Starret and different title. The colophon of this early version identifies 150 copies this unnumbered printed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn and bound by Florence Grabhorn. The paper over board covers is a Deco-style free-form"marblized" pattern printed in black and brown. String-tied the paper over spine has perished. Still bound. Laid-in is the first signature from the 1921 edition title page and Starrett introduction and a leaf of text in a font and size different from that used in either version. This early 1920 version was being printed by the Grabhorns for the legendary San Francisco bookman John Howell who had opened his bookstore around 1912. Edwin & Robert Grabhorn hardcover books

This collection consists of "The Beach at Falesa" "The Bottle Imp" and "The Isle of Voices"; the middle one is one of Stevenson's weirdest tales -- a supernatural blend of Aladdin's lamp the monkey's paw and a game of hot potato. Included are 26 illustrations. This is a very good-plus copy of this busily-decorated volume with scarcely any wear but as usual for this cloth the spine is sunned. This American edition is not at all common: we see at least five English copies for every American one. Beinecke 575; Princeton 53. Stevenson wrote this at intervals between January 1893 and October 1894 laying it aside six weeks before his death to work on WEIR OF HERMISTON. As pointed out in an editorial note A.T. Quiller-Couch wrote the final six chapters from notes and outlines left by Stevenson. Though the binding design does not bear her initials it is by Margaret Armstrong.
