New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English. 331 p., b/w and color ills. Constantinople and the orientalists. Since the publication of our earlier study; 'Orientalism and Turkey', we have been exploring the ramifications of Orientalism in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul itself, or as it was generally known in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Constantinople. The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.

Just as it is privilege to be the General Manager of such an eclectic and wonderful museum, so it has been a privilege to work with so many distinguished contributors, colleagues and consultants in the making of this book. Conceived during our tenth year anniversary festivities, this work is a celebration not only of the richness of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and its collections, but also of the beauty of industrial heritage, the scientific achievements of mankind, and the genius loci of Istanbul and the Golder Horn. In devising the format of this volume, we were determined to do more than a conventional pictorial catalogue of the most important objects in our collections: we wanted also to celebrate their beauty and craftsmanship; to add atmosphere and depth by including contenporary documents and illustrations; and to provide periodic food for thought in the form of essays from eminent contributors.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. Color and b/w ills. 304 p. Personal logs and memoirs of Osman Hamdi's daughter, Nazli between 1907-1911. An ego-documentary study enlightened Turkish archaeology, painting, history of arts, and social life at the beginning of 20th Century in late Ottoman period. "This book focuses on the guestbook of Nazli Hamdi, which consists of dedications by her father Osman Hamdi Bey's circle of relatives, close friends, colleagues, or just acquaintances. The exhibition aims to shed light on the cultural environment of the era following the signatures in the notebook that belong to the leading intellectuals of the period; including the famous archaeologist- spy Gertrude Bell, founder of the illustrated magazine Servet-i Fünun, Ahmed Ihsan, the crown prince of Bavaria Rupprecht and one of the greatest poetess of late Ottoman literature, Nigar Hanim among many others Nazli Hamdi was the youngest child of Osman Hamdi Bey and his wife Marie/Naile Hanim. It is this guestbook, bearing traces of over thirty individuals, that constitutes the backbone of the exhibition. The display attempts to present, identify, and relate to Nazli and Osman Hamdi, or even to one another, this mix of visitors; locals and foreigners, men and women, archaeologists, authors, artists, diplomats At the same time, it examines the story of a woman, grew up in a Westernized elite family, whose life extends from the late Ottoman period up through the early years of the Republic of Turkey.".

"Written in 1851-1869, Skarlatos Byzantios' three-volume masterpiece constitutes a feat of 19th c. scholarship, presented here for the first time in an annotated English translation. Drawing on Classical, Byzantine, Western European and Ottoman sources, Constantinople covers a vast period of over two and a half millennia, from the mythical foundation of Byzantium to Skarlatos' own time. A true polyglot and a keen observer, Skarlatos guides the reader through the neighbourhoods, monuments and social practices of his native city, assisted by detailed references to major historical events, personalities and long-forgotten anecdotes. His scholarly interests span across an impressive array of disciplines: political and social history, literature, architecture, epigraphy, urban planning, demography, ethnography, art and folklore. Above all, Skarlatos is a self-avowed devotee of the City of cities.". Contents: Foreword. Translator's Note. Dedication Page of the 1851 Edition. PREFACE.
