Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13 cm). In English. 222 p. B/w ills. 'The Ottomans developed a highly organized society with many traditions. However, the writing and publicising of 'memoirs' was not one of them. Even the most illustrious Grand Vizier did not avail his personal diary to others for perusal (even if he ever did put them in black on white). This is what makes Leya (Saz) Hanimefendi's book rather unique. She was taken into the 'Harem' of Sultan Abdulmecid at the age of four and lefty Çiragan palace only to be married. She is the only woman who wrote (or rather dictated to her son) her actual experiences of life at the Çiragan Palace where Sultan Abdulmecid reigned. Her references to many incidents, from the utensils used to the Ladies' Orchestra make this book interesting both to the layman and to the historian. Her great sense of propriety and admiration for the way of life she enjoyed at the palace (despite the vigorous discipline) is another factor that makes reading these memoirs a jotfull experience'.

Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world. New English Paperback. Color and b/w ills. 670 p. In English and Turkish. The anatomy of a tradition: 150 years of Robert College.= Bir gelenegin anatomisi: Robert Kolej'in 150 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. A very heavy volume. Istanbul Research Institute in collaboration with Robert College presented the exhibition The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College 1863 - 2013 at the Istanbul Research Institute on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the long-established and meritocratic educational institutions of Istanbul. Robert College was founded in Istanbul in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two men who believed in the universal value of education. It was the first American school to be established in the Ottoman lands, and outside the USA. Surviving revolutions, wars, earthquakes, fires, and epidemics, the College never closed down a single day throughout its 150-year history. Robert College has educated seven prime ministers (four of them Bulgarian), countless statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. It has been the standard against which other schools measure themselves, even when Robert College itself had the challenge of living up to its own standards, due to lack of funding, inadequate buildings etc. from time to time throughout its history. Curated by Cem Akas, the exhibition shed light on the 150 years of the College, as well as the educational, cultural, social and intellectual life in Istanbul through selected photographs and objects from Robert College Archives, Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library and private collections.
