He explains that his 'first object' in calling on Walker was to ask him 'to say a few emphatic words on the subject of the Notice you are requested to read this evening at Waltham Street. I refer to the Public Meeting to be held in the Public Rooms in Jarratt Street on Friday evening next at 7 o'clock.' He complains that 'Mr. Greathead simply read last two words underlined the Notice this morning; and unluckily he did this while the boxes were being circulated for the Chapel Fund Collection' and that 'the reading of it would if heard at all make little impression'. He has invited the 'Revd. Mr. Macguire of Clerkenwell' to be his guest and his lecture will be on 'Romanism its fall and decline abroad and its rise and progress at home'. A RARE PRIMARY RESOURCE EXAMPLE . . . . ORIGINAL PENNED DIARY BY A WENHUA DA GEMING . . . A YOUNG WOMAN MOTHER AND CULTURAL REVOLUTIONARY . . . DOCUMENTING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE HONG WEI BING . . . RED GUARDS IN THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION 1966-1976 . . This diary was written by a young woman mother of two children. She was also an idealistic member of the Communist Party an activist of the Cultural Revolution showing her love for Chairman Mao and infinite hatred of class enemies. . She lived in Anshan Liaoning. During the Cultural Revolution she was a propagandist of the 'Mao Zedong Thought Propaganda Team.' She went to the countryside to practice and promote Mao Zedong Thought. As usual with diaries written during this time documenting the activities of the Red Guards & Cultural Revolution participants this one is unsigned. . She fought against "class enemies at home & abroad American imperialism modern revisionism national opposition all the domestic bulls and snakes colluding with each other." . Her main purpose of keeping a diary was in her words to: "Convey the documents of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the Cultural Revolution." . Below are some fine examples we have translated from her candid diary entries: . "Follow Chairman Mao to make a revolution." . Below that is stamped in lower right corner in Chinese Hanzi: "Wei Wen Sho Ce: English translation: "Condolence Manual." While this title is bit 'cryptic' it is actually a kind of "typical New Year Praise Praise Chairman Mao & praise the motherland book." . Below that is "Zahong Guo Ren Mín Jie Fang Jun Fu Chao Wei Wen Tuan Zeng: or "Chinese People's Liberation Army To The DPRK Condolence Mission Gift." . It was issued with blank pages one sepia-toned portrait of Chairman Mao followed by four color photos of Chinese progress color photos. The last page shows a 1954 calendar of 12 months printed in red. . Obviously the previous owner used this old book to record his thoughts comments and points of view from July 1960 1 page see illus01.jpg of Russian language practice this kind of study was also found on other pages in this diary. . Continuing from then July 1964 to 1967 each page is dated with month and day following each year citation. . While we have selected fascinating examples to show the content there remains about 95% of the diary which has not been described or illustrated. It is a wealth of primary source material and fascinating insights to the thought patterns of the Red Guards and their activities throughout the period 1966-1977 including comments on the death of Mao and the shock to the faithful loyal Red Guards. . . . RED AUGUST 1966 MASSACRE BY RED GUARDS . . OF BEIJING EDUCATORS: . There is a calendar page torn from an annual calendar in Chinese showing August 6 1966 gently laid into the diary. This marks the "RED AUGUST." . The original meaning of August 1966 of the Cultural Revolution is also used to indicate a series of massacres in Beijing which mainly took place during the period. . "According to the official statistics in 1980 from August to September in 1966 a total of 1772 people including teachers and principals of many schools were killed in Beijing by Red Guards; in addition 33695 homes were ransacked and 85196 families were forced to leave the city. . The killing by the Red Guards also made an impact on several rural districts of Beijing causing the "Daxing Massacre" for example during which 325 people were killed from August 27 to September 1 in Daxing District of Beijing. . The oldest killed during the Daxing Massacre was 80 years old while the youngest was only 38 days old; 22 families were wiped out. . Scholars have also pointed out that according to the official statistics in 1985 the actual death toll during the Red August was over 10000." See illus15.jpg for a copy of this calendar page printed in green. . The above was extracted from wikipedia-org/wiki/Red_August article. . CONDITION: The diary is written in very clear clean Chinese Hanzi characters in blue fountain pen ink. . The book is firmly bound & solid in the publisher's original black cloth and silver-stamped cover title. There are a couple of old minor but mended worm holes in the first 2-3 pages in the lower gutter else solid firm & issue-free. . The pages are all intact without blemish. There is a minor ink stain to the left edge of one-third of the last pages there are 2 small worm holes in the hinge-gutter of the first five pages near the bottom of the spine inside the first fly leaf. . 1870D11031England 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good. England Kent and Norfolk counties: c. 1871-1874. 8vo 175 x 115mm; 61 numbered pages in the hand of Charles W. Prescott detailing his various hunting excursions around the Kent countryside. Prescotts ownership inscription on front free-endpaper is dated 1871. His entries are easily read and cover Prescotts adventures on hunting hares with a skulk of foxes writing Found another in the same field ran her straight back to Old Park round the pond and the pack hunted her beautifully . Dec. 16 1871. The hunts took place over sprawling village and countryside or as he describes hop-gardens hills and ploughs of land in the Herne Bay area of Kent England. Many entries are headed by recognizable locations; Stroud Park Broomfield Hilsborough Wolston Heath and Chislet Mill and are dated with month and sometimes year. Only a portion of the way full his entries span about three years the first dated: Oct. 19 71 Stroud Park and last March 25 1874. Contemporary black morocco marbled endpapers and marbled endpapers with original brass clasp faint splitting at lower hinge of first few leaves strengthened at endpapers corners rubbed otherwise in very good shape especially considering it was wielded around so much of the Kentish countryside. Prescott makes many personal anecdotes about his day noting things in his surroundings like scent moderate or adding his opinions we could not kill I think we should have but the sun was too hot. Prescott often ends the entries with jotting down the days weather as something like very indifferent but as good as could be expected with a very cold east wind or simply stating Frost. It is evident from Prescotts personal asides that he was a vigilant huntsman quite dedicated to the task. Further personal glimpses reveal a record of his horses charming names including Salt Fish and Molly Malone. At the time Prescott was taking these notes Herne Bay area and the Kentish villages would have been teeming with people. The Victoria era was one of prosperity when elite English folk flocked to popular destinations to partake in their favorite pastimes. From 1873 on in the journal Prescott notes he was hunting with Pytchley by writing their name in parentheses. The Pytchley hunt is an organization originally based in Northamptonshire in formation as early at the 1630s. The organization is still active today. Pytchleys website notes that from 1819-1873 right as Prescott began with Pytchley for one year the Althorp and Pytchley countries were hunted by one pack with a second pack established at Brigstock. Prescott was part of the famous hunt organization at a time when it was amid significant change and expansion. His notes may keep further clue of such growth. While the huntsman himself may be unknown to history the anecdotal evidence in Prescotts diary gives us a glimpse of the Victorian man fond of his sport.

hardcover

After conservative attendees opposing Garrison walked out of the convention in protest those remaining formed the New England Non-Resistance Society.citation needed

The Society condemned the use of force in resisting evil in war for the death penalty or in self-defense renounced allegiance to human government and because of the anti-slavery cause favored non-union with the American South.citation needed The New England Non-Resistance Society was one of the more radical of the many organizations founded by William Lloyd Garrison adopting a Declaration of Sentiments of which he was the principal author pledging themselves to deny the validity of social distinctions based on race nationality or gender"2 refusing obedience to human governments and opposing even individual acts of self-defense.3 In the Society's Declaration of Sentiments Garrison wrote "any person without distinction of sex or color who consents to the principles of this Constitution may become a member and be entitled to speak at its meetings."1 The Society rejected loyalty to any human government; one historian has described the Non-Resistance Society's "basic outlook as that of philosophical anarchism".45.
