186241734Turnwold Putnam County Ga. 1862. Each issue a folio sheet folded to 8 pp. Each page 9-1/4" x12." Each number printed in three columns per page. No. 12 with a persistent corner chip and occasional small loss. Light foxing. Very Good. EACH ISSUE $250 OR THE ENTIRE RUN FOR $1000

Crandall does not record Numbers 4 and 5; but AAS which says The Countryman was "suspended intermittently" evidently owns them. Its first printing was March 18 1862. The articles cover an array of subjects including of course much on the War:
This interesting Confederate weekly was printed at Turnwold Turner's Putnam County plantation probably the only wartime newspaper so printed. "Joel Chandler Harris was an apprentice for Joseph Addison Turner. In 1862 Turner decided to produce a newspaper from his home at Turnwold Plantation. In fact in a more-than-semi-autobiographical book Harris wrote called On the Plantation he explains that the printing office for The Countryman was established 'in an outhouse.'. . . As was the typical arrangement for the time Harris worked for Turner in exchange for clothing and boarding at the Turnwold Plantation for the four plus years he apprenticed there. As a printer's devil Harris was responsible for setting and inking the type for the paper on the hand-press individually placing the letters so they were spaced appropriately for printing" "Joel Chandler Harris and The Wren's Nest" December 3 2020 Blog site of American Writers Museum accessed May 01 2026.
Crandall 5152. a87745Single volume. Sm.4to. 287p. no blanks marbled boards with leather spine. Entirely manuscript. Title of first page: "Diary Commencing Sunday Oct 3 1869 at Colombo Ceylon". Diary ends April 13 1873. First 38 pages are very interesting as the diarist describes in fine detail- with frequent touches of dry humor - his adventures as he travels on the Simla Steamship from Colombo through the Suez Canal back to London. He mentions that he has taken this trip before. The rest of the diary is written in England apparently in Southampton and most all entries follow a pattern of first describing the day's weather and then listing ships going in or out their passengers and/or their cargo usually coal slate or peat. A few personal notes are given but not often. On his way up to the Suez Canal the Simla stops to pick up coal. Diarist writes: "Aden is very rocky with a dry scorched burnt appearance little or no soil & no vegetation.hot & the glare of the sun exceedingly effecting to the eye." He goes inland to a settlement where he finds "half a dozen of the Simla passengers surrounded by almost two dozen of native trading Jews particularly anxious to pass their wares ostrich eggs and feathers.the din and noise they made baffles description drowning our voices so that we could not hear each other speak. After a quarter of an hour spent in the noisy battling with our salesmen I became the purchaser of some ostrich feather white and gray." Later in trip the ship's Lieut. Col. Lacy "died suddenly after a few hours illness of heat apoplexy". The next day the ship's chaplain refuses to assist at the funeral services as he believed Lacy brought on his own death by drinking too much. Typical entries once back in London: "January 9 1872 . Light airs and colam. Reaper sailed at morn.light breeze from NE with rain second case of diptheria reported in Island at Windbreck. Dr. Logic came here on sunday ." "July 3 1872. Moderate light breeze.Boat off for first load of peats. Simson came in with cargo of slates." From the text is seem likely that the diarist worked either as the Dockmaster or employee of some sort at the Southhampton dock or as an employee of a shipping company located in that area. Some names mentioned in the diary: J. W. Heddle Capt. James Cromarty J. W. Laughton and his son John John Storach and Charles Henry Sparkes. Diarist does say his brother-in-law was Samuel L. Louttie who died unexpectedly on October 22 1869. Another interesting note is that diarist mentions that "The Bank" began July 15 1872. Neat and legible. Diary is in near VG condition with no spotting or tears but some light cover wear. Pictures available on request. . hardcover

1981BIBLIO-33803New Arcadian Journal Wilsden. Bradford first editions 1981-2001. Limited editions usually of 300 copies. 39 volumes illustrated printed wrappers earlier issues with mounted illustration on front wrapper 8vo. between 4 and 114 pp per issue some illustrations a few tipped-in. An excellent and rarely-seen run of the first 21 years' issues of the New Arcadian Journal lacking only volume 14 The Atlantic Wall 1995. Well-produced but in an unfussy style the NAJ is an important and original contribution to garden and landscape history The publisher's description is that it "investigates the cultural politics of historical landscapes by scrutinising their architecture gardens monuments sculpture and inscriptions. By championing the study of political gardening and by promoting restoration of place and meaning the New Arcadian Journal has shed new light on historical landscapes and has also been the catalyst to contemporary re-interpretation and conservation." In a notice in Parenthesis Jack Chesterman enthused that "the New Arcadian Press promotes and supports texts and images of great passion humour intelligence engrossing uses of language and much visual dexterity and wit."The New Arcadian Press has through its Journals produced a I remarkable body of work winch enables us to see our man-made and natural landscapes with new eyes and insights. The New Arcadian writers and artists do not seek to prettify or demystify their subjects but through scholarly and creative responses tell us more about them. The Journals are decidedly not Heritage' based or National Trust' inclined although both these agencies may recognise the depth of knowledge and understanding contained within these publications so much of whose material predates their own current concerns." Starting life as a quarterly in 1981 the Journal eventually settled into annual publication in 1988 with issues from 1990 being double-numbers. Among the issues included here are double-numbers on: Castle Howard: landscape of Epic Poetry; The Wentworths: .the gardens at Wentworth Castle and Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire; The Political Temples of Stowe; Kew Gardens: a Controversial garden Landscape; A Near Fine set save that No. 18 lacks the cover illustration which should be mounted to the front wrapper and No. 26 has a tiny closed tear to the top of the front wrapper. He also chaired the board of the London-based South Australian Colonisation Commission created by the South Australia Act 1834 to oversee the new colony of South Australia before the colony went bankrupt and he was sacked in 1841. He was chiefly known for championing the cause for emigration to the new colony and his name lives on in Adelaide's main river the Torrens the suburb of Torrensville and a few other places Wikipedia; B. "In 1831 having impressed John Stuart Mill Robert Torrens and other leading economists with the value of his ideas Wakefield became involved in various schemes to promote the colonisation of South Australia. He believed that many of the social problems in Britain were caused by overpopulation and he saw emigration to the colonies as a useful safety valve. He set out to design a colonisation scheme with a workable combination of labourers artisans and capital. The scheme was to be financed by the sale of land to the capitalists who would thereby support the other classes of emigrants. It took several attempts before the Province of South Australia was established. Although initially Wakefield was a driving force he found that as it came closer to fruition he was allowed less and less influence until he was frozen out almost completely whereupon he took offence and severed his connections with the scheme Wikipedia."; C.
