1868BIBLIO-51102J. W. Lowndes Oxford original newspaper issues various dates August - September 1868. Unbound broadsheets horizontally folded. 8 pp per issue. Jackson's Oxford Journal was founded by William Jackson the Oxford University printer in the early 18th century as a Saturday weekly: it had a distinguished run being published from May 1753 through to 1928 by then as the " Oxford Journal Illustrated ". Our issues come from 1868 when the newspaper sold for "3d; stamped 4d a copy for which the purchaser received a large broadsheet paper of some 8 pp measuring 25 x 18 inches and densely packed with advertisements news and notices. The orientation of the newspaper was Conservative. In an 1853 centenary issue stated " we hope that our firm adhesion to our own political creed and Church principles is consistent with not merely tolerance but respect for our opponents. We have never hesitated to express our own unbiased opinion on every public question upon its merits and we shall continue to follow the same course". Jackson's Oxford Journal blended reporting of Oxford town and University events with summaries of events from further afield. The principal sections in the paper at the time of our issues were typically included Advertisements generally most of the first two pages with occasional illustrations The Week University and City Oxford Town Council Oxford City Court literary notices Petty Sessions Parliamentary Intelligence Local Antiquarian Gatherings General News arranged by towns including variously agricultural society reports births/marriages/deaths festivities markets and country markets etc. and Latest Intelligence. The advertisements and court reports in particular offer striking insights into life in Oxford and the wider county just over 150 years ago. Our issues comprise: 6014 August 1 6016 August 15 6019 September 5 6020 September 12 6021 September 19 and 6022 September 26 1868. Folded horizontally. Red-stamped "Oxford Journal Newspaper " on the front page. Some issues a little stained generally clean and sound. J. W. 19212937London: Charles Letts 1921. Hardcover. Very Good. pp 64; page/week. A young London mother's diary for 1921. Adele Margate's ownership signature appears on the first endpaper above the adverts: she has made around 150 short diary entries in the printed grid which allows one page per week. She reveals herself as a married woman living in the vicinity of Richmond in south west London. At least two of her children have died and are remembered on their birthdays: 'Took up some flowers to dear little Baby. She has been dead four years tomorrow.' This causes Adele still further anxiety when she records that 'Peter is better but baby much worse. The doctor says he has bronchial pneumonia. Temp v high.' There are trips into London apparently to meet her husband: 'Went up to Town met Lew and we had dinner at Hatchets Piccadilly with Mrs Cooper and Margery and went on to see 'Sunday' by Barclays Bank Amateurs.' There are occasional political comments as on May 17th: 'The coal strike settlement as far off as ever. No coal except 1cwt as week to be 80f' with monthly housekeeping accounts and frequent evidence of social activity and tennis matches. An intimate picture of post-war life among the London professional classes. Very Good Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item 1921 Charles Letts hardcover
