This is the second edition published two years after the first and certainly the better one being the first to contain the numerous tinted lithographed plates. About very good in the publisher's blind-tooled red cloth with gilt detail on the spine. Some inartful but not disfiguring coloring-in to some chipped areas on the spine extremities. This copy lacking the folding frontispiece and one plate "View of Morrow from the South" but otherwise complete and with five plates not noted in the list of illustrations all in the Cleveland area "Cleveland Station" "West Branch Rocky River Near Olmsted Station" "East Branch Rocky River Berea Station" "Elk Creek" and "Grand River Near Painesville Station". The list of illustrations calls for 28 plates including the map. While we have 26 of the 28 the 5 extra yield a total of 31 plates. Thus while incomplete still a desirable and very "Cleveland" copy of this important image-driven guide for rail travelers in Ohio. The author goes on tangents for example spending more than two pages discussing the general history of the Mormons as the guide passes through Kirtland but these digressions seem to be in some sense the point--offering diversion to the weary traveler. This paper was also an anti-Slavery paper. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia: The New England Non-Resistance Society was an American peace group founded at a special peace convention organized by William Lloyd Garrison in Boston in September 1838.1 Leading up to the convention conservative members of the American Anti-Slavery Society and the American Peace Society expressed discomfort with Garrison's philosophy of "non-resistance" and inclusion of women in public political activities. After conservative attendees opposing Garrison walked out of the convention in protest those remaining formed the New England Non-Resistance Society.citation needed<br /> <br /> The Society condemned the use of force in resisting evil in war for the death penalty or in self-defense renounced allegiance to human government and because of the anti-slavery cause favored non-union with the American South.citation needed The New England Non-Resistance Society was one of the more radical of the many organizations founded by William Lloyd Garrison adopting a Declaration of Sentiments of which he was the principal author pledging themselves to deny the validity of social distinctions based on race nationality or gender"2 refusing obedience to human governments and opposing even individual acts of self-defense.3 In the Society's Declaration of Sentiments Garrison wrote "any person without distinction of sex or color who consents to the principles of this Constitution may become a member and be entitled to speak at its meetings."1 The Society rejected loyalty to any human government; one historian has described the Non-Resistance Society's "basic outlook as that of philosophical anarchism".45. Davis first made in this correspondence on Tuesday last:- 'Positive advices received here this morning on Davis' death.' A special messenger from Fortress Monroe who arrived here to-day announces that flags have been flying at half-mast along the rebel lines for several days and information was received at the fortress that it was in consequence of the death of Jeff Davis."<br/> A source from Richmond stated that Davis had a serious illness and "little hope was entertained of his recovery." This is then followed by a biographical sketch of the provisional Vice President Alexander H. Stephens under the heading "THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY." Old folds minor wear Very Good plus.<br/><br/> The Natchez Weekly Courier begun in 1848 ceased publication in 1870 when it merged with the Natchez Weekly Democrat. The Courier's publisher was William R. Adams. <br/> Printed on green "necessity paper" its War content is unusually rich. The middle of the first page prints and discusses "Butler's Order" of 15 May 1862 commenting on "the unparalleled order of Gen. Butler subjecting the women of New Orleans to insults and outrage by the soldiery under his command. The order will shock every person of the least refinement of decency." His "Proclamation" orders that "when any female shall by word gesture or movement insult or show contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States SHE SHALL BE REGARDED AND HELD LIABLE TO BE TREATED AS A WOMAN OF THE TOWN PLYING HER AVOCATION" capital letters in italics in original. A nine-stanza poem immortalizes Butler's abomination.<br/> Additional war news includes a long story on "The Fall of New Orleans" T.J. Jackson's progress in the Valley of Virginia "Stonewall Jackson is within twenty-five miles of the capitol." The roll of officers and privates of the Bingaman Rangers of Adams County Natchez is printed; military activities in Richmond Savannah Williamsport Jackson again with the support of "10000 Marylanders".
