1815213387Mainz: Florian Kupferberg 1815. Half Leather. Good Minus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Large. A very scarce copy of this 2 volume set. Bound in half leather with brown marbled boards. Text in German. An 1815 reprint the first edition being 1785. The leather spines have splitting with loss of 3 cm at the head and 3.5 cm at the tail of volume I. Loss of 4 cm to the head and 1.5 cm to the tail of the spine of volume II. The remaining leather spine has further splits to it. The board edges are rubbed and there is light rubbing to the front and rear boards. Ink stamps with faint lettering to the front end papers and title page and neat ink numbers to the front paste downs though no other evidence of these possibly being ex-library cancellations. An area of soiling to the rear paste down. Volume I - 495pp. Loss of pp 232 235 and 237 241 and 243 with creasing and short tears to the front fore edge of 233 which is loose. Splitting between pp 240 - 245 though the book remains firmly held tight with the cords. Several pages have creasing to the top corners and there is light foxing to the first few pages of the book. The pages are otherwise clean and tight. Volume II - 472pp. A wax mark to the front paste down. The pages appear a little wrinkled with several page corners being turned resulting in a neat crease. There is light foxing to the first few pages of the book. Some splitting between pp 226 - 227 at the tail of the spine though the book remains tightly bound by the cords. Tiny neat ink name signature to the tail of the last page. The pages remain clean and tight. A very scarce copy - more than acceptable despite the page loss - being an early edition of Schillers work. Florian Kupferberg hardcover

Schillers' Complete Works in 10 Volumes. 10 volumes in 5 books. A lovely complete set of 5 Volumes bound in full contemporary burgundy leather with 3 double raised bands with gilt lines/decoration in between and titling in gilt. The Front AND Rear covers of EACH volume both have a central BRIGHT and SHINING GILT Insignia - The Royal Ordnance Arms - The Crest denoting an arm strength out of the mural crown defence grasping a Thunderbolt Joves weapon the arms modern weapons 16th century in the form of cannons and shot and the supporters Cyclops mythological artificers supporting or making possible the manufacture of these modern weapons together with the Motto 'Sua Tela Tonanti'. Beneath this Crest on Each volume on the front cover only is written in Bright Gilt "AWARDED TO GENTn. CADET CHAs. E. HARVEY for Proficiency in German. R. M. Academy DECr. 1849." The inner dentelles are decorated in gilt and all edges are rubbed olivine to deter dust. All hinges tight. The edges of the volumes' spines are rubbed/scraped in a few places the corner tips are slightly 'rubbed' but overall this is a lovely well-preserved set. Internally the volumes are a little dusty and foxed here and there and Volume One has an old tiny pin-prick sized worm hole bored through from the front cover/inner edge of the spine and has worked it's way neatly through 2/3rd of the book at the inner edge of the pages turning into a small 'T' shape here and there - but generally hardly noticable but it is there. All volumes have plain yellow endpapers front and back all somewhat discoloured in the central area old glue but NO Inscriptions in any books. All volumes have an Integral green ribbon bookmark. All volumes have scattered foxing & foxed patching some areas heavily foxed others much lighter - some blocks with nothing but mainly the worst is to to the first and last few pages/sections but also here and there in the body of the book. Volume 1 = Steel Engraved Tissue guarded b/w Portrait Frontispiece of Schiller tissue guard & first few and last few pages quite foxed . xvi 423 pp 7 = Second Book 411pp. Volume 2 = 10 372 pp 6 = Fourth Book 520 pp - there is a Very light stain to the bottom corner of the last 200 pps tapering from the back to the front to nothing. Volume 3 = 10 422 pp. 6 - Sixth book 441 pp. Volume 4 = 10 364 pp. 6 - Eighth book 466 pp. Volume 5 = 10 564 pp. 6 - Tenth book 465 pp. A VERY Handsome Set - with the added attraction of the Royal Military Academy connection.
