Full burgundy morocco sides and spines elaborately decorated in gold with Art Noveau motifs top edges gilt others uncut red and white morocco doublures decorated in gold pearl silk moire endpapers. Frontispieces and plates in three states one colored. Spines uniformly darkened some wear to extremities a few of the hinges a bit tender. Four volumes show small loss to the head of the spine; one has the cover partially detached. In all two very elegant complete sets with matching letters. ; Octavo. Francis A. The 'household edition' printed by John D. Williams; no date given but red bonded leather bindings with gold lettering suggest the 1880s. Penciled note on inside front cover of volume 1 is dated 1893. Probably the most complete set of Schiller's works available in English. With illustrations. Set complete in Good condition. All volumes show wear commensurate with their age: frayed spine-tops dusty tanned pages various dings and dents and rubbings on red bonded leather covers. Some pencil markings to front endpapers. Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was a German playwright poet philosopher and historian. Schiller is considered to be one of Germany's most important classical playwrights. He was born in Marbach to a devoutly Protestant family. In 1860 English translations of Friedrich Schiller's works were widely available often published as part of collected editions most notably those in Bohn's Standard Library. Several individual translations were also in circulation by various translators. This series published by Bell & Daldy and previously Bohn was a primary source for English translations of Schiller's works. The various volumes containing historical works plays and poems were first issued between 1846 and 1849 and were reprinted for many years including around 1860. Nice engraving print of Schiller. Of course famous for the story of William Tell. Bohn hardcover
