During the last seventeen years of his life 1788–1805 Schiller developed a productive if complicated friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works that he had left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Together they founded the Weimar Theater which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany.

In September 2008 the German-French TV channel Arte conducted a poll among its viewers to determine the greatest European playwright "King of Drama". Schiller was voted in second place after Williiam Shakespeare.

CONDITION REPORT: FINE & UNREAD

The spines are square hinges and joints firm and pages tight. Many sections of the volumes are VERY tightly bound and remarkably appear unopened. Multiple leaves are not fully cut and joined together in these sections. The gilding appears to be completely intact. The spines are gently sun-lightened. The volumes show only light rubbing to extremities from minimal shelf wear over the past 120 years. The boards are colorful and clean with sumptuous supple leather.

The Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays Volume I has a light red mark on its fore-edge and Volume II of this work has more rubbing than the other volumes so could be considered NEAR FINE. All of the volumes' interiors are clean with bright untoned pages with no writing or foxing or offsetting from the plates. Each volume has a decorative former owner bookplate on the front pastedown. There may be the scarce mark or sign of handling in places.

An exquisitely bound and spectacular copy in remarkable condition for 120-year-old volumes in ORIGINAL fine morocco of a limited set of only 150 with stunning-photogravures and exceptional hand-colored frontispieces. A set that any bibliophile and collector of fine antiquarian sets would be proud to prominently display in his or her collection.

. Francis A. Niccolls & Co hardcover
