Bernardino Passeri (1540-1590) e Aliprando Caprioli (1540 c. Cfr. Mortimer, Harvard Italian Books, n. 362. Thieme-Becker, V, 556 e XXVI, 283..

His first great triumph was to rescue the German Mark from the inflation of 1921... As the Nazi avalanche swelled, Hitler persuaded him to occupy the Presidential chair at the Reichsbank... but (Schacht) soon saw that the Fuhrer was driving relentlessly towards war. Signed and affectionately inscribed by Carter Glass upon front free endpaper. "Here is a character composed of truth, sincerity and courage. He hates deceit and detests a lie. But this Jeffersonian Democrat possesses a rarer integrity which we call intellectual integrity. Appointed to the Banking and Currency Committee in 1904, the supreme opportunity soon came to him to be the chief architect of the Federal Reserve System. He became the great post-WWI Secretary of the treasury and won Woodrow Wilson's intimacy, trust and praise. He came to the Senate and is the most outstanding Senator Virginia has ever contributed to the nation's chief deliberative council." - Introduction. xv, [1], 519 pages. Index. In-4°; pp. (8), XLVIII, (6), 1 cb; bel ritratto inciso su legno di Muzio Attendolo Sforza “Magnus Sfortia”, all'ultima pagina marca tipografica incisa su legno. Mortimer I, n. 212; Adams G-692; Sander II, 3170; S.T.C. p. 304; Shaaber n. 201; Brunet III, p. 584. In-4 °; pp. (8), XLVIII, (6), 1 cb; beautiful portrait engraved on wood of Muzio Attandolo Sforza “Magnus Sfortia”, on the last page a printer’s mark engraved on wood. Vellum with two labels and gilted title on the spine. Ownership ink stamp at the title page. Work dedicated to Cardinal Ascanio Sforza. Original edition of the biography of the founder of the Sforza family, Muzio Attandolo called Sforza the Great, son of Giovanni Attendoli and Elisa Petroncini. Giovio devoted much of his political reflection to the theme of Milan's freedom under the Sforza family. The work narrates in 91 chapters the life of Muzio Attendolo, the Cotignola, (Cotignola di Ravenna, 1369-Pescara 1424; the quince entered the coat of arms of the Attendere Sforza), who had a very adventurous life: he was born in a wealthy family of farmers whose members were already devoted to war; he then became a great leader, opening the way for his natural son Francesco to conquer the lordship of Milan, the first duke of the Sforza dynasty. Count Alberico da Balbiano gave him the glorious nickname of Sforza, which from the Latin name recalled the violence and daring of his behavior from a young age. In fact, he became one of the most celebrated leaders of his time, Gonfaloniere of the Church for Martin V, great constable of the Kingdom of Naples for Queen Giovanna, who assigned the surname Sforza to the son of Muzio, and from him onwards to all descendants. . Paolo Giovio (Como 1483-1552) was one of the most esteemed and influential intellectuals of the first half of the sixteenth century; he turned from the study of medicine to the life of a gentleman in the Roman environment of the court of Leo X, became the personal doctor of Giulio de Medici then Pope Clement VII, under whom Giovio had great fortune. In his villa on Lake Como, decorated with the frescoes designed by Vasari, he collected his famous and varied collection, rich in relics and rarities from all over the world. The extraordinary gallery of portraits inspired him to write many biographies, including this Life: the portrait engraved on wood here is in fact taken from a painting he kept in his home and which he often admired. The woodcut, due to the great similarity with the son, was often confused with the first portrait of his son Francesco. Very Good Arabic Original brown half leather bindings in Egyptian style, raised six bands to spine, title gilt on the second, volume nos on fourth, and alphabetical with the historical content of the volumes on sixth compartments and "Mahmoud Al-Tawawî" name. Minor foxing on some pages. Overall a very good set. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Arabic. 14 books are complete set in 7 volumes. Extremely rare first printed edition of the most comprehensive and complete corpus on Baghdad city, which includes Al-Baghdadi's first-hand account of the collection of hadiths, biographies, and his travels in the 11th century Baghdad in traditional "al-râwî" style. Al-Baghdadi is known as a Muslim traveler in the pursuit of knowledge who compiled hadiths and traveled to many Islamic cities. He was born on the 24th ?jumada II, 392 (1002) at Darzidjan, a large village on the west bank of the Tigris below Baghdad. The son of a khatib [i.e. preacher], he began his studies very early and spent his youth traveling in search of ?adith. In this way, he visited Basra, Nishapur, I?fahân, Hamadân, and Damascus. Finally settling in Baghdâd, he held the office of a kha?îb and this was the origin of the name al-Khatîb al-Bag_dadi. After completing his education, he spent more than twenty years of his time writing "Tarikh Baghdad". He finished his corpus in 444 AH [1052-53]. He was a fellow student of Rîsürrüesâ Ibn al-Muslima who was the vizier of the Abbasid caliph Kâim-Biemrillâh. The vizier took Khatib, whom he appreciated in the science of hadith, under his patronage. The Abbasid caliph, therefore, ordered Khatib to be given permission to take hadith lessons from him. Khatib started to narrate hadiths from "Tarikh Baghdad" to his students here in his house near the Nizâmiya Madrasa, on the other hand, he started to read the books for which he had permission to narrate from many teachers, also write the books he planned. Several years after, the Turkish commander Besasiri (?-1060), who was a supporter of the Fatimid Caliph Mustansir-Billâh, entered Baghdad with the encouragement of the Fatimid caliph, deposed the caliph, and killed Ibn al-Muslima. Some members of the Hanbali sect, who had a grudge against Khatib because of what they wrote against some Hanbalis in Tarikh Baghdad, started to disturb him by taking the opportunity to kill the vizier. Therefore, he had to flee to Damascus. In his masterpiece, Khatibi, in addition to his account and descriptions of the city during his time in Baghdad, 7831 figures of people in total who lived or came in Baghdad before 450 (1058), statesmen such as caliphs, viziers, commanders, poets, judges, and other professions. This is an alphabetical work giving information about biographies of these figures, but it starts with the name "Muhammad" referring to the Muslim prophet. The first volume is about the establishment of Baghdad in the pre-Islamic period, its conquest by the Muslims, and its history. This masterpiece of him, published in fourteen volumes, is the most comprehensive corpus written on Baghdad in the Islamic world including the city's topography, history, et alli. Signed by Jack O'Connor upon front free endpaper with "My Best Wishes." x, [3]-302 p. Black and white illustrations. "Jack O'Connor [1902-1978] grew up in Tempe, Arizona, in those days before World War I when a boys' own father had living memories of a truly 'wild' West. The Tempe [he] recalls was already in the twentieth century, but the flavor of the frontier still permeated daily life. And he summons it up for the reader - the humors, the absurdities, the gaucheries, the pleasures of the horse and buggy West - with a sort of affectionate chuckle that seems to say, just a bit sadly, that the old-fashioned is after all faintly ridiculous. His book is peopled with grandfathers unforgettable, with black-sheep uncles, with a fine and varied collection of Western characters who bring back to us an America - and a childhood - we seem to remember no matter where we were raised." - dust jacket. Book is well preserved with top edge darkened, otherwise quite clean, bright and unmarked with light wear to publisher's green cloth decorated in maroon and lettered in gilt. Tight and square. Above-average wear, some faint scribbles, and several repairs to dust jacket, including a 3" x 1" facsimile replacement portion at top of spine and upper corner of front panel. Signed by Steadman and Clark upon front free endpaper. 270 pages. "In 1983, when Sally Ride became the first American woman to enter space, there was no question of whether she could handle the physical stress of the flight, because in 1961 a secret study found thirteen women were physically fit and properly motivated to become astronauts. Bernice Steadman was one of the twenty-five women invited, and one of the thirteen to pass that early strenuous physical. But then she was only allowed to watch, not to participate, as American men first flew into space." - from dust jacket. "A window into the life of a very remarkable lady. Bernice fought the battle of gender discrimination with grace, determination and, above all, ability." - Jerri Truhill, Pilot, Mercury 13. Appears unread. A superb copy. Book

Prominent revisionist historian Ernst Zundel [1939-2017] was deported from the United States to Canada in 2003 after he was alleged to have missed an immigration interview. In Canada he was placed into solitary confinement at the Toronto West Detention Centre where he would remain until his deportation to Germany in 2005. In prison Zundel maintained a steady stream of written correspondence with his supporters around the world. In 2004 his American wife, Ingrid Rimland Zundel [1936-2017], requested recipients of his letters to forward them to her for compilation into this 182 page book. Zundel's prison living conditions were harsh and his writing utensils were limited to stubby pencils which prison officials would only infrequently allow to be sharpened or replaced. Despite this, Zundel, formerly a commercial artist, produced diminutive works of art to include in his letters to thank his supporters. Included with this book is one such artistic sample, a simple 4" x 3.5" pencil crayon illustration of three snowdrop flowers, signed and dated by Zundel on 24 Dec. 2003. Beneath the illustration Zundel wrote "Painted in Solitary in a Canadian Prison". "The law under which I am held is very complex and only recently passed by the Canadian Parliament after 9/11. It allows a Canadian judge of the Federal Court to hear secret witnesses and secret evidence. Neither my attorney nor I will be told the names of these witnesses." - back cover. This copy was carefully studied and extensively marked up by its prior owner and shows above-average wear. Ironically, the law used to imprison Zundel was unanimously ruled unconstitutional by Canada's Supreme Court in 2007. Book
