19390001730ZURICH SWITERLAND THE QUEEN MARY EUROPE 1939. On offer is a very interesting original 1939 manuscript travel diary handwritten by a Swiss-born American named Martha Dickoff who visited her homeland in the summer of 1939. She lived in Lodi California and left from Stockton California on May 5th 1939. She wrote of her cross-country trip to New York where she left for Europe aboard the Queen Mary on May 10th. Mrs Dickoff was married but traveled alone to visit her family in Switzerland. She wrote several pages about her days aboard the Queen Mary apparently traveling 2nd class. She described the ship her roommates and the people she met. On her second day on the ship Mrs Dickoff became ill with food poisoning which the ship's doctor blamed on the train food she had eaten. She soon was better and enjoyed the rest of the crossing. Upon her arrival in Europe she wrote of her travel across various countries until she reached Switzerland. She dearly loved the country of her birth and was overjoyed to see her sister and other relatives. Superbly placed to witness the beginnings of the war during this very dangerous time in history to be traveling to Europe she keenly observes the immediate problems and is desperately afraid for her relatives in Switzerland. Once in Switzerland she did not write but began again in July as she started her long trek home through Italy. Europe was on the cusp of war and Mrs Dickoff noted the soldiers and wrote of fear about the war in Europe. When she said goodbye to her sister she wrote that she would probably never see her again: Sept 15 1939 "The parting with my sister makes me feel very sad as she is not feeling well and I don't think I'll ever see her again and yet I'm happy to have her with me 'till the ocean parts us." While aboard the ship on her return to the United States she wrote of the many people on board escaping the war in Europe. In one entry she wrote: "Sept 18 1939 We are about 3500 people on board of all descriptions and nationalities. Some have no cabins but sleep on a cot in the cabin on deck. They put up with anything rather than stay in Europe which might at any moment be involved in another World War." The 6" x 4" diary has altogether 50 handwritten pages with some names and addresses written in the back. Overall VG. . Very Good. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. unknown
19150008159Ontario Canada. Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting little diary/journal date from the turn of the 20th century in Toronto Canada. This paperback volume measures 6.75 inches by 4.25 inches. It contains 52 pages in week-per-page format plus several memoranda pages. The journal is approximately 40% complete. The book is in good condition and all pages are intact. The paper front cover has a small piece cut out of it. The handwriting is legible. The author of this journal is unknown. The journal is a typical week-per-page diary given out by companies to customers and clients. This diary was produced for and given out by McWilliam and Everist - Wholesale Commission Merchants in Toronto Canada. McWilliam and Everist were commission merchants in the wholesale fruit trade. Although the diary is dated 1899 entries were made in it from 1915 until 1931. It was not used as a diary but rather to record two groups of events: guests who visited the writer's home and marriages. The following are typical sample entries of the first group: "Russel Grove Martha Houser and John Dradge brought Annie and Veronica Webber and Nathan Martin & Oziah Berringer from Waterloo for dinner" Dec 24 1915; "Henry Hirsh and wife & Peter Hover and wife & Sidney Martin from Lancaster Co" Aug 14 1928. This would be Lancaster County PA in all likelihood as there is no Lancaster County in Ontario. Of particular interest and value are the second group of entries. These 8 pages contain approximately 50 undated notations about marriages: "Sarah Fretz marr Lawrence Hipple 1796 children Moses Mary Judith Margaret Sarah John Grubb married Mary High of Elgin Co". Elgin County is located in southwestern Ontario. "Esther Fretz daugh of Henry son of Weaver John married Chris Gayman his daugh Barbara married Henry Hinnsburger". For genealogists entries like this can be pure gold. They help connect different people and families and confirm relationships. Working with genealogist records and databases in Ontario it may be possible to draw much more detailed picture of relationships. From context it appears that a number of names are of Jewish or German background. Waterloo ON and Lancaster Co PA were both settled by Mennonites of German extraction and these communities have generally maintained good ancestral records. This volume would certainly be a very valuable reference for a researcher working in this area.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 19TH CENTURY; 1890S; 20TH CENTURY; 1910S; 1920S; 1930S; CANADA; ONTARIO; GENEALOGY; MCWILLIAMS & EVERIST; TORONTO; LANCASTER COUNTY PA; WATERLOO ONTARIO; GERMAN CANADIANS; PENNSYLVANIA GERMANS IN CANADA; MENNONITE SETTLERS IN ONTARIO; ONTARIO GERMANS GENEALOGY; CANADIANA; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . paperback
19680001812WHITE BIRCH LAKE NEW YORK ALASKA MONTANA USA. Good. 1968. On offer is a super 1968 - 1976 manuscript relic of one man's love of Alaska and hunting. Handwritten by Richard Merritt of White Birch Lake New York the book details a number of trips over the 75 pages of hunting trips through Alaska and Montana while also traveling through many other states. Titled: "Alaska: 1968 1971 1973 1974 and 1976. Montana: 1968 1975." Here are some snippets: "July 1968 1st Trip to Alaska. Crossed USA to Washington ferry to Vancouver. 1 day to cross island. Started 7 day trip on inland ferry to Skagway. 1st stop was at Prince Rupert. Stayed nite at campsite. 2nd stop Ketchikan. Stayed over nite at campsite. 3rd stop at Wrangell also at campsite for over nite. Took 2 day on ferry going to Juneau capitol of Alaska. We were here 2 days site seeing around. Next stop was Haines for over nite. Last stop and end of ferry ride was at Skagway. We stayed here over nite before taking Narrow Gage Railroad to Whitehorse. Stayed all nite here before driving on to Alaska border and traveling in Alaska. We stayed all nite in camper at the Border City Lodge. This is between Canada and Alaska. Tok Junction was first town in Alaska. Route 1 goes to Anchorage and Route 2 goes to Fairbanks from Tok. We stayed at camp site at Atlasta going to Anchorage also Chickenloon and next stop was at Palmer with friends from our home town. Stayed 2 nites. Also stayed one nite at Cooper Landing. We stayed 3 weeks at Soldotna where my daughter lives. Her husband worked at Airport and also flew planes. We unloaded camper so we could travel around with pickup. Helen and I drove down to Ninilchik a few a few miles on a dirt road. We were going east into a bright sun. Down the road I could see 4 or 5 moose all standing in the road. As I drove toward them they all separated from where they were standing. One large moose stood about 75 yards from road looking at us. I stopped got out loaded my gun 308 Winchester 88 with 165 shell. Took good aim and shot. The moose stood there 4 or 5 seconds and dropped dead. As I started down to dress out the moose 2 women hunters came along looking for moose for their winter's meat. They saw my moose and only wished they had it. I gutted it out and cut off hind ¼. Being a hard frost it dragged up to pickup fairly easy. Helen helped me load it in pickup." "October 19th 1971 Drove 360 miles today and the driving was through snow slush rain dry road and detour for about 8 miles from cable rocks to you name it. Started at day lite and stopped at dark. I think there were 4 trucks or cars off the road. Two poor guys had tipped a small trailer over on a large wide ditch in a foot of water. Looked like all hunting equipment. What a mess. We had good luck all day. Mountains and valleys but beautiful country most of the time. See many Canadian hunters but they report very little game. Moose are scarce and only saw 2 Caribou hanging up." "October 24th 1971 Went to First Baptist Church today. Sunday school excellent woman teacher for over 30 years. Over 400 in church. 300 high school and college age. Pastor Jackson very good in thoughts and expressions but is thinking of going modern with hippies etc. Only drove about 50 miles today. We visited the Cheese House today." The book measures 6" x 9 ½" and is overall G. BIO NOTES: Mr. Merritt was a noted resident of White Birch Lake and casual research finds a photo of a large stone and on this stone it said "This stone from White Birch lake honors Dick and Helen Merritt for their dream in 1947 to develop a lake from an abandoned farm. He passed in 1988 and she in 1996 but they will not be forgotten. Erected 1997." There is also a newspaper clipping showing a photo of Richard and below it was the caption: "Richard Meritt of White Birch Lake Windsor brought his Alaskan Hunting trophies to the Sr. Citizen's Multipurpose Center last week for everyone to enjoy. Merritt bagged a 500 pound 9 year old Grizzly bear on one trip and a mountain goat on another excursion. Both the grizzly and the goat have been made into rugs with head mounts and the full body skin. Meritt's daughter Carolyn and son-in-law Duane King live in Bettles Alaska above the Arctic Circle where King is an ordained minister and bush pilot. They have been doing missionary work in Alaska for 12 years. While visiting the Kings Mr. Merritt has compiled an outstanding collection of slides of the Northern Lights and Alaskan sights as well as the Indian and Eskimo villages where the Kings minister under Central Alaskan Missions."; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF WHITE BIRCH LAKE RICHARD MERRITT NEW YORK HUNTING HUNTERS ALASKA MONTANA BETTLES ALASKA BIG GAME HUNTING AMERICANA NEGRO GENDER STUDIES EARLY 20TH CENTURY LIFE AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1917000527BSan Francisco Hong Kong Japan China. Good. 1917. Leatherette. On offer is a very interesting 1917 travel diary commencing May 14th with the record of having purchased the book to record memorandum of the unidentified writer's business trip to Japan. Our author a fur dealer departs on an overseas journey with a business partner leaving from San Francisco en route to his final destination - China. A perfect opportunity to witness China at a very important time in it's history being the birth of Republican China and China's war against Germany all in mid 1917. Besides the critical time in history the writer appears to be a most interesting individual as evidenced by his commentary and interactions and observations. Seems also to be a rough and tumble business type - gambling drinking disagreements with associates and general carousing all for the good of deal making and entertainment. Extensive notes include passing a Japanese warship 4th day ported Honolulu 7th day. Aboard the S.S. CHINA our gentleman uses record logs from the Captain's records to note latitude longitude distances traveled etc. time of arrival to Yokohama Japan; 12 days. Anchored in the Shiminoseke Straits to avoid a typhoon the day after leaving Kobe. Woosung 3 days later then to Hong Kong 4 days later. The time in China the long lonely nights midnight to 1:45am swimming drinking and writing home getting visits from colleagues. Then "Our Day" Thursday Oct 18 1917 - helping Britian fight the Hun's. Prompted by a telegram from home "come home quick" our writer begins the long process of ending his trip finally leaving Hong Kong Oct. 27th on the Tenyo Maru to Shanghai 3rd day. Another 3 days to Nagasaki to Kobe Yokohama Tokyo Japan. 18th day docked Honolulu. Further notes; wrestling the 'Japs' aboard ship arriving in San Francisco played baseball with the Giants bumming around . 18910002147OTTAWA CANADA. Fair. 1891. On offer is an interesting rather charming original 1891 manuscript diary handwritten by an Ottawa Canada student Walter B. Martin detailing his personal and school times and activities. As with most Canadiana weather plays an important role and is mention daily. A gift from Sid to Mudde a nickname we assume carries the inscription: 'Write in this diary everyday or I will pound you when we meet.' He writes from February 1st to sometime in May when he states his inability to carry on writing a diary. Oddly the first few pages are only Sundays. He used a red ink at times which smudged somewhat in the corners where he must have leaned his elbows making for some difficult reading. There are later pages that had been set up for what appears a Grand Tour to Europe and Western Canada. He has made headings for dozens of stops but only written in less than a dozen. All told there are approximately 50 pages of entries. That said the book is folio sized and the 40 odd pages with regular diary entries are well filled. There are also some clippings on a few pages. The 13 x 9 inch leather-backed brown cloth gilt title on front covers worn and with some smudging as mention spine chipped hinges broken but holding internally good. 19140001546WELLESLEY MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA BOSTON. Good. 1914. On offer is an original 1914 - 1918 manuscript journal handwritten by Albert E. George of Wellesley Massachusetts. It appears that Mr. George was a clergyman as he writes about many religious topics mentions giving sermons and speaks of others as "other clergyman". Entries paint a detailed picture of the times as he writes about many topics including the bad economy poor living conditions socialism insane hospitals and he mentions the women in the church being involved in suffrage plus much much more. Albert also does a good job as a diarist outlining his visits: Jamaica Plains Lincoln School S.J.C.D Parker House Harvard . Names mentioned include Judge Michael J. Murray Mayor Curley Dr. E.H. Bradford Jack Rese plus many others. There are approximately 100 pages and save for rubbing and the spine cap missing the book is overall G.; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF ALBERT E. 19430008110UNITED STATES ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER. Good. 1943. On offer is a collection of WWII period American military ephemeral. The collection consists of a 1945 diary kept by a naval rating a diary kept by either a marine or army soldier likely ANTHONY V DI BARTOLO as noted in one book a Riot Control handbook 2 large-size black and white photographs a printed handbook about the U.S. Naval Training Center a copy of a U.S. Army Field Order a second 1945 diary a 1949 diary an address book a tax return form and an appointment form to the United States Civilian Conservation Corps. The various documents are in good condition. They are not the property of one person but rather are items for the WWII and early post-war era. The 1945 navy sailor's diary contains 52 pages in a week-at-a-glance format plus some memoranda pages. It is approximately 20% complete. The author is unidentified. From an entry in March we know that he is married and has a baby. From context it appears that he is working at a U.S. Navy dry dock /repair base in the Pacific theatre. His first full entry states ". Working on USS Pringle. She took a suicide dive in Leyte Gulf." Jan 6. This reference is to the successful kamikaze attack on Pringle on Dec 30th inflicting serious casualties and damage. He makes references to alarms and GQ General Quarters: ". Rumours of a mast job knocked off by a 'Betty". Plenty of work" Jan 9. A "Betty" was the nickname for a Japanese Mitsubishi G4M long-range bomber. "Turn To Underway GQ Passed islands off New Guinea Fixed all guns and worked on ships motors ." Feb 19; "Passed convoy of LST's that left Manus Saturday morning ." Feb 21. He mentions several ships he worked on including USS Borie USS Haynsworth USS Randolph and USS Leutze. The second diary is more of a journal. Its owner was Anthony V Di Bartolo of Lawrence MA. Casual research has not turned up any additional biographical detail. The diary has 365 pages plus memoranda and is about 10% complete. Its printed year is 1943 but that has been struck out and 1947 substituted. It is tempting to suggest that entries date from 1943 but U.S. forces did not invade Guam which is mentioned in the book until 1944. The book was used as a notebook/journal. It contains comments drawings and reference notes that clearly indicate that he was a private soldier most likely in the U.S. Marine Corps. "We started off this morning 0730 with light marching packs helmets and rifles we were learning scouting on the march we went 5 miles into the jungle mud and clay up over our leggings we was guarding the body of troops from the right flank. ." Jan 21. He mentions a base on Guam: ". I hitchhiked up to Agana that is the capital of Guam ." Jan 24. Other pages contain lists and checklists. There are hand drawings of grenades and mortar shells and diagrams of various types of marching configurations. He has a detailed drawing of a ruck sack and the location of each piece of kit that it contains. The field order is a 1 page 8 inch by 14 inch typed movement order dated Feb 13th 1943 signed by a Captain Odell. This movement order relates to a training exercise on the Massachusetts Military Reserve confirmed by specific geographic references in the order: "180 th F.A dismounted less detachments will prevent penetration of enemy reconnaissance patrols SOUTH of line: RR BRIDGE - BOURNE BRIDGE - GREAT POND - WOOD ROAD - ROUTE 130". The order goes on to detail the movements and responsibilities or individual units. The United States Civilian Conservation Corps certificate details the appointment of John Sullivan as an Assistant Leader. The commission is signed by FGE Carlson USNR Commanding Officer of the 1153rd Company. The Civilian Conservation Corps was one of the most successful New Deal programs of the Great Depression. It existed for fewer than 10 years but left a legacy of roads bridges and buildings throughout the United States. Between 1933 and 1941 more than 3000000 men served in the CCC. The two black and white photographs measure about 9.35 inches by 8 inches landscape. They are not annotated. The depict aerial views of what appear to be two islands. The Riot Control Handbook is an army training manual detailing riot control methods: "This manual presents the problems of riot control from the viewpoint of the platoon company or battalion that suddenly finds itself pitted against a mob" p vii. It deals with theory equipment manoeuvres training and examples. It is an excellent example of the type of training that a military organization would develop. The printed handbook about the U.S. Naval Training Center is interesting in that although it it's a glossy printed volume 5.5 inches by 4 inches its cover is actually a mailing cover. Marked with the insignia of the U.S. Naval Training Center Sampson NY it was mailed by Joseph Ciampo to Mrs Joseph Ciampo in Winthrop MA. Casual research has not found any additional biographical information on Joseph Ciampo. It contains 32 pages of text and black & white photographs It is an explanation of the training and routines of the U.S. Navy and the Training Center. Interestingly it is written in the 1st person and appears designed specifically for family members of recruits. There is a SEPARATION CENTER brochure from the U.S. War Department Personnel Center at Fort Devens MA giving information to members leaving the U.S. military at that base. The second 1945 diary the 1949 diary and the address book are all blank the US income tax return is blank. There is also a catalogue from a military surplus/supply firm that is dated 1984. The remaining documents are a Blue Cross brochure and an unidentified page listing locations apparently in Europe some flight times and some codes. Altogether this is an interesting collection of ephemera. It gives historians and researchers a fascinating look into some of the day to day experiences of an ordinary sailor and soldier in wartime. The U.S. Naval Training Center Handbook gives a very clear description of the expectations and experiences of a U.S. naval recruit. The Riot Control manual outlines in detail what the role of the military would be in helping maintain order in a civil dispute up to and including the use of deadly force.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MID-20TH CENTURY ANTHONY V DI BARTOLO 1940s POST WW2 ERA SECOND WORLD WAR UNITED STATES NEW ENGLAND MASSACHUSETTS U.S. ARMY U.S. NAVY IN WW2; THE PACIFIC CAMPAIGN; ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER USS PRINGLE; USS BORIE; USS HAYNSWORTH; USS RANDOLPH; USS LEUTZE; BATTLE OF LEYTE GULF; BATTLE OF GUAM; ITALIAN AMERICANS IN WW2 MILITARY EPHEMERA WW2 EPHEMERA U.S. NAVAL TRAINING CENTER RIOT CONTROL HANDBOOK CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS EARLY POST-WAR ERA PACIFIC THEATER NAVY SAILOR'S DIARY U.S. MARINE CORPS AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY ANTHONY DI BARTOLO JOSEPH CIAMPO U.S NAVY SHIP DAMAGE DURING WW2 SHIP REPAIR FACILITIES IN THE PACIFIC THEATER PAPUA NEW GUINEA NEW GEORGIA SOUND; THE SLOT NAVAL HISTORY MARITIME HISTORY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

187100003cSpringfield Minnesota MN S.S.GERMANIA. Good. 1871. Full-Leather. On offer is a wonderful early travel/steamship diary for 1871. The diary was handwritten by we believe E. Alvord of Springfield Minn. a young very outspoken man to record his trip to Europe while traveling on board the steamship "Germania'. The first part of the diary 16 pp are handwritten miscellaneous notes. One rather interesting note: "Nov. 23 Milton Hull in 188 Deen St. Cooks Vanderbilt House." The voyage starts May 23rd when he begins recording his trip from leaving the harbor on board the ship in Europe and on his way back home aboard the ship "China" until September 12th 1871. In total there are 93 days worth of handwritten adventures. The diarist did not hold back; he didn't seem to like the places he visited or the people too much and at one point he seems to have a problem with some Jewish folks. Here are some snippets; "Left Hoboken 15 minutes to three. Sent out hats overboard amid the shouts of the crowd. At 4:40 discharged pilot awful hungry .Out of sight of land fair wind making 12 ½ knots hungry. Fear we have got beat as we haven't got in a 2nd cabin. The captain is a gentleman polite and kind. Dutch babies are thick!.The weather is beautiful. Company pleasant for one sailing out on the boundless ocean. So vast reminds me of the summer of Dr. Taylor on "loneliness.".Heavy fog on the banks a dull stupid day wish I was home. No service on board which I don't like! Have been up on the bridge with the ladies .A very slow steamer which together with the German style of cooking makes it quite tedious Arrived at Plymouth at 9 pm. I feasted 1st time since leaving home. Had quite a nice piece of roast beef and some ale which I relished highly. Awful English funny people so concluded yet kind to us .Visited St. Paul church. Climbed to the top of it 424 feet high. Saw the tomb of Wellington and Nelson. Also attended a funeral there of a daughter of one of the Arch Deacons. 18950001725LYCOMING COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA STEUBEN COUNTY NY. Good. 1895. On offer is the super original manuscript diary handwritten by Esther Marie Gernit Bullock b.1852 who lived in or around Lycoming County Pennsylvania or Steuben County New York. She is married to Francis Joseph Bullock and they have four children; Charles Edgar Walter Herbert Allen Gernit and Edna Maria. This is a very large very full diary measuring about 7 ¾" x 13" with 250 pages of daily entries covering September 30th 1897 all the way through to April 6th 1900. We learn that three of her four children are no longer living with them or soon on their way out. This greatly affects Esther and on many occasions she talks about being so lonely and missing her children greatly. The family moves two times during the time span the diary represents but only to a different house or location in the village. The boys seem to work for the railroad and she doesn't like it at all because of how dangerous the work is. Frank is retired but seems to be looking for work. There is also talk of the Spanish American War her first grandchild born to Charles Edgar her grandmother Bullock passing away and the funeral traveling to the near by villages talk about how the New York Central Railroad Company has taken over the Fall Brook Central RR Company line Cyclone flooding and so much more. On numerous occasions she says her days are "terrible and tedious". She also writes a very intriguing entry on October 6th 1898 telling that something so terrible has happened and filled them all with so much grief that she can't write it down. Here are some snippets: 1897 "October 4th Froze hard last night and was real cold this morning. Warm in the afternoon. Frank helped me wash in the forenoon. After dinner he went over town. Walter went to Hornellsville to see about getting on to the Erie road but it seems as if I never can stand it to have another boy on the railroad. It has caused me a great many tears and unhappy hours. I rather he would do most anything else. Edna went over to Charles Edgar's a little while. He got back from Williamsport about noon." "November 18th Snowed and blowed. Frank is not much better. Walter worked but was so rough Allen did not start out. Charles Edgar invited us over there to eat dinner with them. It is a year today since they were married and it seems a long year to me since he went away from home. He ought to have gotten back from his trip about noon but it was nearly night but we did not eat dinner until he came. Edna got dinner and supper here at home. Jarvis expects to go to work in a few days." "December 2nd Pleasant but cold. Walter worked in shop. Jarvis and Allen have found work and are going to begin tomorrow. After diner I went over to Charles Edgar's a while. He has to go to Williamsport tonight. Frank came home from the 4 roads tonight. He says Foster is very sick. Dr. thinks he has typhoid fever and they are very much worried about him." 1898 "February 16th This has been a terrible tedious day. The wind blew very hard and snowed all day. There are some drifts around the house. I dreaded to have Walter go to work this morning. It is not quiet so tedious this evening but will be a cold night and Charles Edgar goes to Williamsport. I am afraid he will suffer with the cold." "March 5th Real pleasant. Frank worked for Mr. Buck. Walter and Allen worked. Mrs. Saxton went home this afternoon. Frank and I went over on Bridge Street to look at a house. We have decided to rent but do not know just when we will move. Mr. Lamb owns the house. It is only a little ways from Charles Edgar's so we went up there a few minutes." "April 6th Cold and snowed nearly all day. We have had a hard day. We finished moving. Charles Edgar and Walter both helped or I don't know as we would have got through today. Libbie came over and helped me straightened around some. She and Charles Edgar put down the carpet in my room and the boys and made up the beds. If they had not I am afraid we wouldn't have got much done for I am tired out and sick. I wish Allen could have been here to dinner then we could have all eaten together. Charles has gone to Williamsport tonight." "April 21st Cold again and rained some. Frank and the boys worked. Charles Edgar and Libbie have not got back from the 4 Roads yet but I shall be glad to see them. Edna went over town this afternoon and while she was over there she heard that war has begun between the United States and Spain. And the papers are all full of war talk. There has not been a battle yet but everything seems to be about ready." "April 22nd Rained nearly all day and has been a cold day. Frank and the boys worked. Charles Edgar and Libbie came and I was ever so glad to see them. Frank Edgar Allen and I went up there a little while this evening. Everybody seems to be excited over war. We read in the papers tonight that the United States had captured 2 Spanish vessels." "May 1st Real pleasant and is the warmest day we have had but is raining again this evening. Charles Edgar got back just as we had dinner ready so he and Libbie stayed to dinner with me. The boys Edna and Glenn and I went over to the Erie depot this evening to see 5 train loads of soldiers on their way to war. It was a sad sight. Walter went down to Elmira on his wheel in company with several others to see the soldiers start from there. He says it was a solemn occasion." "May 2nd Rainy early this morning then the sun shone out for awhile but it soon began to rain again. Frank did not get in a full day but Walter and Allen did. This evening Edna Glenn and I went up to see the Fire Building to see the fire works. It is all war excitement. They raised a flag on the building. Some more Corning boys enlisted but I am happy to think none of mine are on the list." "July 8th Very warm. Frank and the boys worked. Charles Edgar has been down home a while. Mr. and Mrs. Sonnerson started for New York tonight and tomorrow afternoon the ship will sail that will carry them back to their old home Denmark. I was sorry to have them go for they are nice people." "September 7th Rained nearly all day. At the time we were having such a terrible rain here last night down to Troy 4 Roads and Springfield Pa there was a terrible cyclone. The greatest damage done at any one place was at Steve Brace's. His large barn blew down killed Will Brace and 14 of their cows and 3 horses. It must have been an awful shock to his parents." "September 18th About 5 o'clock this morning we had a hard thunder shower but soon cleared off and has been a nice day. Walter started for the 4 Roads about 20 minutes of 8 this morning on his wheel and expects to get there about noon if he has good luck. Tomorrow will be father's 79th birthday but they will have the gathering today at Edgar's for some of them could not be there tomorrow. It makes me very unhappy to think I could not be there. I never failed but once before. I hope Walter will get there in time for dinner." "October 4th Cloudy but did not rain until toward night. Frank worked. Allen has been around home. Oh how many more tears will I have to shed over my family I cannot bear to have one of them away from home but a few days at a time but this afternoon Walter has gone to Avoca to run a barber shop that is if he likes it there. Of course I want all of them to do what is best for them but Oh! How lonely I will be. Charles Edgar went to Lyons." "October 5th Rained hard nearly all day. And it has been fitting to the happenings and what did happen I never will write for everyone of us are bowed with grief but I believe the day will come ere long that we are all happy together for that is my prayer. Frank nor Allen worked. Charles Edgar went to Lyons." "December 25th Christmas and it has always been a merry one to us before this but today tears take the place of joy. Of course I am so glad the other children could be here but poor Allen. Oh How I miss him. Walter came home and Charles Edgar and Libbie came down. Emma Shaw was here too. All seemed to be pleased with their presents and I am sure I was with mine for they were all very nice but I must have Allen home before next Christmas. Walter and Edna were going to church tonight and they coaxed me to go with them." 1899 "January 19th Very pleasant but chilly. Frank worked. Charles Edgar went to Lyons. Libbie came up and took dinner with us and at noon I stared for the 4 Roads. She went over to the depot with me. At half past 5 o'clock this afternoon I got here at the 4 Roads. Allen met me at the depot and Oh! How glad I was to see his dear face. Every time I looked at him it seems as if I am dreaming. Julia Stuart Dell and Edgar are all sick. Edgar is under the Dr.'s care. I have been sick all day but fell better tonight. Jesse Bullock's folks have a daughter It was born the morning of January 19th." "March 1st It has been a beautiful day but tonight the wind blows like a storm. Frank worked but his foot isn't any better. Charles Edgar went to Lyons. Edna was over home this afternoon and went over town of an errand for Frank. I went with Mrs. Lindsey this afternoon down to the Congregation Church to a funeral of an old man who died in the Insane Asylum. It is no one that I knew but his name was James Littlefield." "April 18th Very pleasant and quite warm. Frank commenced work at the mill. Charles Edgar did not get back from Williamsport until 5 o'clock to night but ought to have been here about that time last night. I got very nervous about him but they were waiting for cars. I went up to his house this morning a little while. I had a letter from Allen he says Warren Gernit has enlisted in the war and is on his way to Manila. Edna is over to Mary Nichol's yet." "April 28th This has been a beautiful day but the wind blew hard. Frank worked. Charles Edgar went to Williamsport. I suppose this will be his last trip for the Fall Brook Company for next Monday the New York Central will take possession of the road and will be known as the Pennsylvania division of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Edna and I cleaned house. This evening she has gone to a party." "June 9th Rather cool all forenoon but think it is some warmer this afternoon. Charles Edgar went to Lyons this noon. Mrs. Smith Housel Nell Westcott died this forenoon. Her baby was born the next day after Libbie's and it seems so sad she must die and leave it. I have been down to Charles Edgar's this afternoon. Frank worked." "July 2nd Toward night after it got cooler I went up to Charles Edgar's but hadn't been there but a few minutes before Frank came after me and had a dispatch from Edna and wanted me to come to Watkins tonight for she was sick. Of course I hurried around but it was only 10 minutes before the train would leave but I went over hoping the train would be late but started before I got there. Now I shall have to wait until morning but it don't seem as if I ever could " "July 3rd Awfully warm but I am so thankful I didn't have to make the trip to Watkins. Edna got home here about 11 o'clock last night. She had a bad time with her heart and they were so frightened about her that she sent for me but she was some better and came home. She doesn't look as if she would be able to go back very soon." "November 18th Froze some last night but has been a lovely day. Frank worked. Charles Edgar started for Williamsport early this morning but before he got there he got hurt and had to come home. He fell and struck on his foot and cut it open so he had to go to the Dr. and have it sewed up. It is a great wonder it didn't break his neck. It scared me terribly when I saw hat had happened but I guess it will get along all right. This is the third time I have had to write in my book of an accident to him since he had been on the road. And I pray that this is the last trouble he will have. We were all invited down there for supper as it is their wedding anniversary and we went and stayed the evening too. Coral Paine brought his phonograph up there and we had some fine music but we would all enjoyed it better if it hadn't been for Charles Edgar's accident." Many names are mentioned: Mary Nichols Ida and Olive Edwards she says that Olive took poison and died Emma Shaw Frank Jarvis Foster and Lill King George and Kate Cornell Saxton Mahlon Nichols Lamb Holmes Ellenberger Cole Sonnerson Blanch Fries Billy Hope Hollenbeck Townley Dr. Lane Lindsey Ned Hallstead Ed Hogaboom Dr. Miller Elder Fuller Dutcher Colvin Prof. Blodgett Zelda Mulligan and more. HISTORICAL NOTE: The 1880 census shows her in Springfield Bradford County Pennsylvania but they have moved since the census was taken because in this diary she mentions going to places such as Dundee Avoca Williamsport Lyons Elmira and it looks like Murray Hill is close to them so I'm not quite sure exactly where she is in Pennsylvania or New York. They must be close to the border too because most of the towns are along it. The diary's cover is very worn and torn but the pages and binding are very good. 19300001620CROPPER SHELBYVILLE LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY KY. Good. 1930. On offer is a very charming pair 1930 and 1935 of original manuscript relics of Depression era Kentucky handwritten by a sweet 21 year old school girl named Eula Mae Morgan who was born May 24 1908 and lives in Cropper Kentucky. The 1930 diary is one of young love and the romantic feelings and expressions she pours out her heartfelt feelings and as she contemplates life and her existence. She writes: 'I sometimes don't understand myself - why I feel a thing or do a thing - only I do feel heaps.' She is a very good student assists in teaching and is active in the Eastern Star and other groups. She is also a super diarist giving a real feel for the times. She notes her classes involve chemistry testing water doing her thesis but on the fun side went to Dr. Pepper opening and she aptly describes the taste. There is no word of the school's name but there are many clues that should assuredly help local historians or collectors. For example all the men are 'Dr.' and they are assisted by 'Sisters'. She is also a girl of strong opinions. One interesting entry states: 'Charlie Lee came in and talked of her hot dates - it is almost impossible to believe she buried her father little less than a week ago.' She mentions and notes going to Mt. Sequoyah her Easter Star membership her 89.7 grade average and much much more. We note that on June 30th full page entry in another hand - K.W. writes regarding his leaving school and missing the girl he loves. The 1935 diary presents a grown up married woman cleaning her house and cooking for a party preparing for her guests taking care of her doctor husband A.B. also called 'Sugar' working for her doctor father - 'we did two tonsillectomies' also mentions radium treatments for a patient blood transfusions babies with pneumonia and about to die delivering a baby but tonsils seem to be the specialty. We learn in March with some little irony that Eula Mae has to get her own tonsils out in the Shelbyville Hospital. She relates the total cost of the operation as $7.00. We learn more about this interesting family: Uncle Henry Warren has an orchestra called the Kentucky Mountaineers a very well known Hillbilly band they have a cabin in Barbourville and casual research finds that Eula Mae Morgan was the president of the Kentucky Federation of Business and Professional Women in 1948 - 1950. The 1935 diary is somewhat more sporadic: entries are in Jan 1st - April 29th June 17th - Aug 3rd Oct 1st - Oct 5th Dec 10th - 20th then 25th and 26th. As professionals they seem less affected by the economics of the Depression: they buy a new car early in the year but when tragedy strikes A.B. - he has a neck dislocation loses his sight for a few days and is in hospital for several days Eula notes the bill is $40.50 and she goes home to see about cutting back on expenses to be able to pay the bill. All in all this unique pairing of diaries offers an super insight to this woman's development from student to wife and capable partner with her doctor husband. Grace is as many young women of the time occupied with friends and family and we read a more than casual interest by the writer in sewing and quilt making with frequent entries about she and her mother making aprons dresses clothes for her sister's dolls a doll hat for a family friend's little girl . She also mentions many many names of friends and visitors and she leads a very active life giving remarkable detail of a young woman's life in the late 19th Century. We note with fascination that Grace became the deputy postmaster her father being the Postmaster for the Osgood Post Office in 1893. She was paid $300 a year. Her father was well known as he also worked as a newspaper man and ran for State Senator. The diary is contained in two 2 large 'legal size' perforated at the top note pads of about 80 pages each for a total of about 160 pages in total. 1922000887HAVERHILL BREWSTER SEA PINES MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1922. On offer is the remarkable handwritten journal/diary of Katherine Davis of Haverhill Massachusetts 23 years old at the commencement of writing. Entries begin June 1 1922 and continue through the 1930s over the fully written 152 pages. This 8.5 x 6 inch book is a rare combination of Katherine's spiritual journey as she strives to be an enlightened Christian and the trials of medical problems that dog her; spina bifida which involved 9 months of operations a mastoidectomy and serious problems with her eyes. That said she is also a young woman with many friends and this too is laid bare. Throughout the journal it is clear that Ms. Davis is a character of remarkable strength who views her medical trials as God's method of preparing her for whatever role He has for her. But Katherine is still a young woman with all the wants and desires of any young woman and as a casual reading provides she has a busy good life with family and friends. The family appears to be wealthy commuting between Haverhill and a home in Brewster Massachusetts on Cape Cod called Sea Pines. The journal is littered with ephemera; letters notes between school girl friends photos and some news clippings. This is truly a deep look into the life heart and soul of a very intriguing young woman. The front cover is detached but present the spine cap missing but interiors are in very good shape. 19070001607WATERVILLE ONEIDA COUNTY NEW YORK. Good. 1907. On offer is a very interesting uniquely matched pair of original 1907 husband and wife manuscript diaries handwritten by Lillie A. Waterman nee Lillie A. Harris of Earlville New York and her husband of 9 years Warren D. Waterman of Waterville New York. Lillie is the true blue diarist in the family writing nearly every day and Warren does the best he can but sputters out in May. The diaries detail a picture of a rural farming family mostly dependant on selling butter drawing wood and dealing with the dairy cattle and calves. Lillie never fails to mention the weather her daily chores visitors sales of butter etc. and the hundreds of other things a rural wife deals with. Warren while he writes does only a slightly lesser job and it is very interesting to read side by side the same day's entries. Between the two there is a great deal of commercial and economic information of the times genealogical data and a great deal of the local events including births deaths accidents etc. relative to the Oneida Utica Waterville and Graycraft New York areas. The diaries measure approx. 6" x 4" and in one case the text block has parted the other is loose but intact. Overall G.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF LILLIE A. 19470001605ASHLAND DAYTON ORRVILLE OHIO OH. Good. 1947. On offer is an original very intriguing 1947 manuscript diary and journal of a terrible post World War II child custody case and divorce. Unique for the times this was handwritten by an unidentified rural Ohioan who may have been either a Myers or Garver as he identifies 2 uncles. The author tells of his daily life which usually revolved around his large extended family the churches he attended and automobiles which he repaired and worked on all the time though he did do other work including farming. But right from the start the reader sees a pattern begin: the first entry is January 5th where he writes he has loaded up his car went to Ashland by 6:30 pm and then slept on his mother's davenport. He is also sick with a cold that never seems to end. Other entries mention more family travels large amounts of cash buying a car selling a house long and late hours weather reports and concerns and social observations. Yet all the while in the background are his health and the ups and downs of his divorce. He appears to be ill a lot perhaps the stress he sees the doctor many tests different shots and so on. In July he is in trouble with the law who seem only too glad to give him a hard time even though he has legal counsel. A part of the diary tells of his struggles with his own child custody case in which he is trying to get custody of his child. He notes trial dates of which he was never informed. The custody case and visitation get very dramatic as his ex-wife or girlfriend tries hiding the child from him in Alabama. He travels to Jacksonville to talk to the Mayor who took him to the High School where he had traced his daughter Sylvia. He also travels to Alabama and Florida searching for his high school age daughter Sylvia. Later he went to Birmingham to enlist the help of the Sherriff. This whole case would have been very unusual for the time. He does a super job recording each and every visitor companion and family member: Uncles Charles Myers Uncle Newton Garver Woodford Howard Leroy Reynolds Glen McFern Paul Sharpe heard Dr. Davis missionary 35 years in India at a lecture sleeps at the church one night Joe Bagelys Chippewa Lakes Park Lattasburg downtown Dayton Mansfield Perrysville Jeromeville plus dozens of places on his travels. 1928000402RICHLAND IOWA COLORADO SALT LAKE CITY UTAH. Good. 1928. On offer is a super piece of Americana being a handwrittenmanuscript diary that records the daily thoughts feelings and adventures of a teenaged girl who leaves Richland Iowa on June 26 1928 and spends the summer in Colorado with a visit to Salt Lake City Utah returning home on October 4. At first one thinks the author might have been pregnant as she made reference to her uncle bringing pickles to the Fourth of July picnic "to suit my taste" and another reference to a friend making the horrid mistake of asking about her stomach but such does not appear to be the case. The diary was written by Naomi Wonderlich whose uncle published the Richland Clarion newspaper in Richland Iowa and in addition to writing over a hundred pages about her trip Naomi submitted regular reports about her journey to the Clarion which were published under the title "My Trip to Colorado." It is clear that Naomi was a wonderful writer. Naomi averaged more than a page per day of closely written entries on 5 1/2 by 8 paper. She starts her journal commenting on the frustrations of watching a fellow traveller play with the windows on the train unable to decide whether she wanted them up or down and then moving from seat to seat. Her conclusion to her diary is perfect: "At last my train came. I tho't it never would get started. At last we reached Osky Oskaloosa and before I got off I saw the folks. We talked pretty hard and try as I would I didn't go to sleep any on the road home." In between she travels to Grand Junction Colorado goes to a lakeside cabin with her aunt and uncle travels around the area by car walking and horseback visiting neighbours and making many friends and then embarks on a side trip to Salt Lake City to visit the Mormon tabernacle and to hear the choir. Then she returns to Colorado takes a brief job as a nanny and housekeeper for a local family who needs help and then returns home. She receives letters from home at every stop along with copies of the Clarion which include her articles and has a wonderful experience. Some of the places she mentions include: Grand Junction Colorado Springs Douglas Pass Meeker Trappers Lake Fruita Loma the 101 Ranch Rifle many many more. Naomi recorded names of people she stayed with met at parties stopped to visit with on the road and talked to on the train. She was very interested in other people and this comes across in her writing. Here are some snippets: Terrible disturbance last night when some kind of an animal crawled across Alma's and my bed. I was so frightened I trembled. We called fro help but no one came. Finally our courage grew and grabbing the first blanket and giving it a shake I rushed outside with Alma following close with the next blanket. Couldn't find the matches so had to arrouse Aunt M. When we returned to the wigwam we could find no trace of anything. Poor frightened little chipmunk I'll bet and he was more afraid than us. Before that disturbance Alma made a sad mistake by asking me "is my stomach in" that's as far as she got for we giggled. She really meant to be kind and was only asking if her elbow was punching me in the stomach. Surely was funny when it happened. we therefore christened our wigwam Giggle-wam." "Rowed over close to the boys and they followed us. I actually wished one of them the luck of falling in the water for they were both standing up in the boat casting and of course acting everything but sensible. They kept tagging and all of a sudden one dark hair turned the most graceful flip-flop and landed in the water head first. He came up pretty quickly and had his head first that time too. The seat in the boat broke while he was standing on it and trying to push with an oar the boat off the shore or rocks we were a mighty tickled bunch. I was the only one lucky enough to see the whole performance." Got up at 7 and wrote some more. Had breakfast and then started out to see the sights about 9. Stopped and window shopped quite a while. Went on to Temple Square into the Information Hall and registered. Went then to the museum there. Saw lots of Indian mummies. Then got in a gruop being taken on a sight-seeing tour. Went into the Chapel then the tabernacle and were told about the Temple. It was then nearly time for the Concert so we began looking for Browns. Watched the doors quite a while then went in. I sighted Aunt Maude and Omar almost at once so we went over to them. After the recital of the music on the pipe organ we started the hunt for Uncle Ross. Finally found him. Omar's shoes hurt him so Uncle Ross tried to fix them then we went to the Cafeteria for dinner. Uncle Ross was determined to foot the bill. We had a very enjoyable meal. Naomi's diary includes her time as a nanny for Margaret Elaine McIntosh who was born on 17 Dec. 1925. She very much enjoyed her time in the McIntosh household particularly because of Margaret's grandmother Mrs. Adams. All of the pages are in perfect condition and are written on in pencil or ink majority are ink. The handwriting is very legible and at the back of the 120 pages there is a month by month accounting of all money spent from the time she left until the time she returned. She also made note of every expenditure down to ten cents for a pair of sodas being sold by boys at one of the train stations. This is truly a wonderful account of 1920's America.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF TRAVEL TRIP VACATION RICHLAND IOWA SALT LAKE CITY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA . unknown

1822000119England Germany France. Very Good. 1822. On offer is a Georgian era travel journal/diary dated from June 20th 1822 to September 6th 1823. Our traveller while unidentified by the illegible signature the writer is undoubtedly the father or grandfather of famed musician and musical agent Robert Whyte from whose estate this book was apart of; and as the writer makes extensive notes and observations on this his 4th visit to Germany Paris and London in well over 80 pages his identity may yet be revealed or confirmed upon further research. Daily entries get easier as one gets used to the author's scrawl. Illness seems to have dogged our diarist alot on this trip. Besides the illegible name on the front that we can not make out along with the title "Journal Pt 4 My 3rd Journey to Germany in June 1822". Research will no doubt yield many many details from this determined writer. Overall the book 8.25 x 6.5 inches is in very good condition save for some light general signs of ageing to the boards with the pages being very good save for some edges being a little ragged. The spine is nice and tight. The unused last dozen pages have been cut out but the text appears complete.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY TRAVEL EUROPE TRAIN STEAMSHIP STEAMER OCEAN GOING GERMANY ENGLAND FRANCE King George IV Georgian Era Whyte Britain . hardcover

1944000875HILVERSUM BUSSUM ALMERE HOLLAND NETHERLANDS NL. Very Good. 1944. On offer is a small intriguing significant handwritten Dutch language World War II diary which details in everyday language the final horrible last days of the Nazi occupation of Holland and the invasion to drive them out. Running out of everyday supplies and food the Dutch were on the verge of death from starvation our unidentified author recounts the events of the day inventories what few food and basics he has saved and traded off and then provides anecdotal references of the common shared experience of the destitute Dutch. Most interesting are entries wherein our author relates for example taking some milk from someone as a 'trade' for his pet cat the writer is sure that they stole and most likely ate. Horror is also on the author's mind as he relates the roundup of men in Hilversum and region which apparently where the writer is based. This is truly a heartbreaking read given that the Dutch were aware of the oncoming Allied victory yet still they starved and died before the supply trains and infrastructure could be rebuilt.
