Raymond founder and president of the Round-the-World Society. Included in the book are approximately 150 pages describing Raymond's voyages photo plates a fold-out map of the world and approximately 140 real stamps all with postmarks dated 1925 and 1926. The return address of the letters is the Round-The-World Society in New York NY. There are more than 45 letters contained within this book each addressed to Mrs. Harriet H. Hale of New Haven Connecticut. The first 13 letters are not numbered but the 14th is labelled XXVII. All the letters that follow are similarly labelled with Roman numerals in sequence. Some appear to be missing--for example the numbers skip from XXX to XXXIII. The travelogue begins at the North Cape Norway where Raymond describes seeing Europe from where he sits: "There beyond the thick dull curtain of fog lies the most interesting and colorful continent of the world Europe." The author states that this is the first of his Arctic letters. He goes on to write from Greenland Bear Island Spitzbergen and the North Pole. Next he sails to Antwerp and visits various locations in Germany France and Monaco. Then he moves on to North Africa where he describes places including Tunisia Algeria and Morocco. The descriptions are colorful and entertaining and provide an interesting look at these various communities through the eyes of a man who is likely American or English. He writes of a visit to Ruisseau des Singes in Algeria saying "Some of the monkeys get so bold as to put their hands into our pockets searching for hidden peanuts. One of them finds a shiny coin and steals it. He climbs a tree and sits on a branch. Fingering the coin he examines it carefully." The letters conclude with a flight from Tangier to Gibraltar and a trip into Spain where the letters end with letter number LXIV: "A Bullfight in Seville". The leatherette two-hole binder measures 6" x 9". The screw posts used for binding are missing but could easily be replaced. There is some general wear to the leather. On offer is a very good pre Depression era European travel diary handwritten by Emma June Hibb of Manatee Florida not too far from Sarasota. Mrs. Hibb is a keen observer and dedicated diarist traveling with a large group of Floridians from September 6 1927 through October 11th when they return to New York. A quirky writer going from catty commentary - her girlfriend is miffed that they are traveling with so many of the people she can't stand from back in Florida to her observation that some men aboard ship sure do change their attitude when they discover a woman is married and her husband is also aboard ship. Emma also captures some choice moments on tour especially moving a passage wherein a French woman recognizes them for Americans and rushes over to embrace them all the while holding their hands and weeping in a thank you obviously the under current being the strong emotions still attached to the 'Great War' but 9 years in the past. She has the great habit of giving people nicknames based on place or memorable trait - Budwieser Iowa Carolina and West Palm to mention a few. The book has 2 pages filled with autographs from shipmates and Emma overwrites the book proper using the alphabet address area for other daily entries. 19270002226ASEA ABOARD THE SS WEST HARCUVAR. Good. 1927. On offer is an utterly charming from a fascinating perspective original 1927 manuscript trip diary handwritten by E.J. Austin Deck Boy on the SS W. Harcuvar. Edward as we learn from a tucked in news clipping about the 38 year old man uses a 'Composition' notebook beginning Sunday April 17th to May 31st while undated the year matches up to 1927. He begins with the first entry as if a the book is a long letter to his mother and family. Typically his first few days aboard ship as a new crewman is fraught with the highs and lows: the sea air makes for a big appetite and then the rolling of the waves make for a 'green' sailor in both definitions of the situation. By the end of the first few weeks he is an old tar taking his turn at the wheel in between paint chipping sessions at the forecastle. 1927000495Milwaukee Wisconsin WI / Germany. Very Good. 1927. Full-Leather. This diary reveals the story of one young woman's trip to Germany in 1927. The diarist is Gretchen Ziegler from Milwaukee Wisconsin. Complete with what sounds like a ship board romance with the Captain of the S.S. Cleveland our young woman spends a good deal of time with him; not only on board but also after they dock. His name is Captain Stege and he even signs her diary in the front. She also has another man on board who is very interested in her and seems to be competing for her attention with the captain. Gretchen starts sailing on May 5th and her diary entries end on July 15th while still in Germany. The diary is fully written for 73 pages and then another 30 or so pages in the back where she has written addresses hotels stopped at cash accounts etc. Gretchen is visiting Germany because of her family heritage there. Research indicates she is related in some way to the Oetker family famous for baking powder. They are a very wealthy family and many of her entries have to do with staying on their estate. Among many there is a wonderful entry about her riding a train through Germany and the little girl on the train gives her a four leaf clover. Excerpts from a mere 16 days: "May 5th A.M. Shulled by the mobs. Shared stateroom with a Mrs. Traeger of St. Paul she was exceptionally nice. Table 21 second sitting. Companions Captain Stege formerly of Hamburg American line now living in New York. Mansolff who didn't seem to notice us at lunch but spoke during dinner. Also Mr. Westendarf of Coldwater Mich. who was crossing for the 31st time. Capt. S. gave me a glass of wine at dinner. Uneventful evening did not dance." "May 7th Became acquainted with more of the passengers. Moved my deck chair to the boat deck. Walked around all day. Had a cocktail with Captain S. before dinner. Mosel wine from Mr. M. at dinner both of whom took me to the dance where I had three more cocktails Manhattan. Purser wanted to meet me but did not go up on deck. We sat at the captains table for dinner and he is a charming man. Was down on the list as coming from Mexico. Weather ideal." "May 8th Played shuffleboard. Spent two hours on the bridge from 10 to 12. Capt. ordered a special dish for our luncheon "Schlesisches Himmelieich." consisting of speck prunes dried apricots dumplings and delicious gravy. Tried to sleep on deck but couldn't. My two Romeos took me to the dance. Met Dr. Schwartz who dances divinely. Mosel wine for dinner Champaign for dancing. At dinner Captain S. said "Gott sei dank hente ist Somitag und wird meht getanzt." He was fooled. I probably spelled many of those German words wrong but some of them translate to "God would not be thanks to today" or something like that. "May 10th Were invited by the captain for tea at 4:30. Saw his "Parodies" Eva serpent and apple pictures painted by him etc. Captains said the Cleveland had never learned how to roll Mr. M. & S. did not get to bed until the wee small hours of the morning. Spaniards on board." "May 13th Dolled up in my black dress for the captain's dinner which thrilled and moved me almost to tears. Captain S. seemed both delighted and moved by the Buergemeister of Bergdorf's speech and the wire sent to the Hopag signed by six men each of a different country. Costume party in the evening but did not dress up." "May 17th Up at five sun shining everything immaculate. Captain S. came to the hotel with me there I had my first ½ l. beer ." "May 18th Met Captain Stege at one. Had lunch and rode around the city coffee at Alster Pavilion trip around the harbor passed the Cleveland. Back to hotel on combination elevated and subway. Dinner at a hotel then to Hausa Theater very superior vaudeville then to Kio high-class cabaret not home until two. Hamburg beautiful with many lovely canals from Alster. Weather cool but sunny. Lovely parks. Old town very quite. Charming restaurants tables outside. Dresses fully as short as at home ." "May 20th Captain Stege stayed at a hotel and we had breakfast together at seven. People in Hamburg never seem to go home." "May 21st Captain Stege saw me off at 7:41 after breakfasting together. Arrived Bielefeld at one met by Tante Jakoli chauffeur in lively Mercedes car and oh boy what a home on a hill overlooking the entire town gorgeous gardens employees four gardeners. Lina Oetker seems very nice grandson Rudolph. Drove around beautiful country out to their farm. This is the life two maids two horsemen. Talk about luxury silver dishes knives and forks so I don't know what to use. Beautiful hilly woody surroundings. Hope I don't disgrace the name Ziegler my figure causes increasing comments" thought that was quite the comment. "May 24th . Visited the Oetker factory which is immense. 0011145Hartford Connecticut CT. Fair with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is an interesting diary of a Connecticut woman in the years following World War One. This is a five-year diary that was kept for only two-and-a-half years. Entries begin in January 1927 and continue through to May1929. The author of this diary is unknown. Context suggests that she lived in Connecticut possibly in the Hartford area. However this unnamed woman was very busy. She had a family of 6 children and context again suggests that she is older. One of her daughters is married and has children of her own. There is no reference to a husband in her entries. Several children still live with her. Her life is very busy with the variety of tasks she must complete daily to manage her home. Excerpts follow: Louise was sick with severe headache in night and today---had indigestion. Came down and slept on lounge. Snowed. Went to Miss Mary meeting. Elsie L. Brought me home in bad storm. He and Mrs. Sye died last night suddenly. Luke 24-5&6 Jan 4 1927. Tried some puzzles but didnt feel up enough. Cool. Took nap. Terrible sleepy all of the time. Baked apple pie and potatoes Mar 24 1927. Had a lovely bouquet of roses from Elsie and Leighton. Grace wrote lovely card. Elsie got my notices of Board Meeting written. She and Frank went to church. I got dinner. Letter from Esther yesterday. She is away too much. Wrote her a long letter May 13 1928. Rained and cooler. Thunderstorm last night. Finished Death Comes to the Archbishop. Finished hemming my napkins. Mr. Case gave me big barrel of gladiolas. Frank and I went to meeting. Voted to build sidewalk and athletic field school house. Letter from Esther Aug 6 1928. Throughout her diary she makes references to various biblical texts. For a social historian this diary paints a picture of a very ordinary woman in her later years managing her family and relationships. For a Womens Studies program this diary clearly illustrates the social situation of many women at that time in America. Measuring 5.75 inches by 3.0 inches the book is about 55% complete. The fabric cover is soiled and shows some wear. The binding has pulled away from the front cover but all pages are intact. The handwriting is cramped. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . paperback

19280009075AROUND THE WORLD ASIA EUROPE SOUTH AMERICA. Good. 1928. On offer is an exceptional thoroughly fascinating and definitely unique scrapbook by a long time seaman navy officer and author by the name of Arthur Gordon. It cannot be understated how interesting this document of travel in the late 1920s is. It is in such excellent condition and absolutely filled with interesting photographs postcards from numerous contents and ephemera that lend a tremendous amount of meaning and significance to the documents around it. The scrapbook dates from 1928-1929 right after he graduated from college at NYU. There are probably close to 200 photographs and postcards in this book. Gordon and a friend traveled around the globe for six months via steamship seeking out adventure and this book is the grand culmination of their globe trotting. Many of the photographs post cards and ephemera have captions that explain them and often describe the spots visited along with short paragraphs about the journey. The ephemera in the book are also rare and very interesting. Alongside the photos and post cards Gordon added numerous hotel stickers luggage tags from ports visited identification cards from the ship and even a Certificate of Vaccination that certifies that Mr. Arthur Gordon was vaccinated against Smallpox on Nov. 25 1928 and signed by the Doctor. However the two most interesting items of ephemera are probably 1 an original handout from Dollar Steamship line mentioning 100 tins of Opium still hidden on board this ship and offering a reward of 5 dollars a tin to those with information and 2 a very well preserved broadside that warns the passengers to be on the lookout As there is an organization at this port for the purpose of placing Russian Stowaways on board. The cover page of the book reads: Round the World. November December January February March and April 1928-1929. Hawaii. Japan. China. Singapore. Ceylon. Egypt. Genoa. Capri. Naples. Venice. Rio de Janeiro. Santos. Montevideo. Buenos Aires. On the next page there is a paragraph that sets up the book: After our return from the Amazon Howie went to Harvard Business School Dick began asking himself what was best to do with a year off I returned to my writing. On the night of November 12th 1928 Dick called from Boston to ask if I could leave for Singapore at four oclock the next afternoon. At four oclock the next afternoon we left for Singapore the first stage of the journey being by way of the Overland Express to Frisco. We already had passports and could get what visas we needed in San Francisco. Also I could buy what clothes I needed and suitcases to carry them in. A little later he writes My status was purely social: I was to help Duke enjoy himself until the ways split then was to continue on my own which would be nothing new. All photos and post cards are in fantastic condition and can be removed with no damage. In addition there are five loose photos in the album of Arthur Gordon who apparently posed as a nude model at some point in his life. These photos are quite intriguing because along with the photos is a photo of a sculpture created by Armenian-American artist Haig Patigian a very well known personality in the art world at the time. He was an active member of Bohemian Club serving two terms as club president. He designed the Owl Shrine a 40-foot high hollow concrete and steel structure which was built in the 1920s to have the appearance of a natural rock outcropping which happened to resemble an owl. Patigian has signed this photo to Arthur and it seems like the two might have been friends. I also discovered two of the nude photos of Arthur posing for a fairly well know German photographers studio by the name of Bruno Wiehr of Dresden. I was quite surprised to find this information but I suppose it makes sense considering Arthur Gordon was also an aspiring author. He most likely spent considerable time in artist circles throughout his life and this is how he ended up modeling. Needless to say the photos have some value on their own. This is a truly exceptional travel scrapbook in excellent condition and immensely interesting. The wow factor is exceptional. Background: Arthur Gordon had a long career at sea. He joined the Navy in WW I and was a recruiter during the war. He would later serve aboard the USS Oceanographer for four years on the US Coast Survey. During WW II he would write the book "The Years of Peril". Besides serving in WWI and WWII he traveled extensively as a Merchant Marine Officer and was employed in the tourist industry. After WWI Gordon made two trips around the world and into the Amazon. Gordon also attended Bard College and NYU finally earning a Master's degree. In 1949 he was teaching classes in writing fiction. He was listed as a Navy Commander in the reserves in 1949 as well. At that time his full time employment was as a Freelance Writer. He published short stories in Argosy and Maclean's Magazine sometimes using the pen name "Arthur Shirt".NOTE: WE LIST HIS EARLIER 1919 JOURNAL SEPERATELY. 19280001775SIAM THAILAND SOUTH EAST ASIA. Very Good. 1928. On offer are an interesting pair 2 of 1928 and 1929 original manuscript diaries handwritten by a young English mining engineer named Leslie Arnold Mayo while working in Siam. Using a large page per day 'Roneo Indexed Diaries' he writes approximately 311 entries in the 1928 diary and 235 entries in the 1929 diary ranging from a single line to a full-page usually at least a paragraph or two ending with his return to Dover on 3 October 1929 with occasional entries made while in Europe to the conclusion of the calendar year. The author provides a unique 'yin and yang' look at his time in Asia from the prejudices of a young man of his time and place balance with the topic of the perils of going native; the challenges of mining in contrast with the lure of making one's living abroad particularly in an exotic locale such as Siam. Mayo appears to have no little responsibility managing and working a tin mine near Langsuan then at Kopah in Thailand as he does the books calculates expenses and doles out wages writes daily reports some with drawings manages equipment repairs and hires the Siamese and Chinese 'coolies'. Mayo answers directly to the Superintendent of Mines and in 1928 received a salary increase. He is also in frequent communication with the Governor and even socializes with him. Beginning on New Year's Day of 1928 we understand he has been in Thailand for some time as he is comfortably situated in a bungalow at the Nai Hoot Juita tin mine in Langsuan Siam and he may have started his job there as early as the summer or autumn of 1926. Mayo does a great job bringing the essence of his life in Siam to the reader as he not only details his work but also his play and other activities: the journals contain many stories of encounters with tigers game hunting the miner's opinions of his contemporaries in the industry as well as the hired hands minor mishaps such as an injury to his knee a weekend spent in Penang and the sorted affairs of his colleagues. Mayo contemplates purchasing options essentially licences in other regions as well as investing in shares in the Australian owned mining company 'Huai Yot' which was involved in gold mining in Malaysia. Other large Australian companies such as 'Nai Hoot' are mentioned and interestingly Australians were the first to introduce dredges into tin mining in Siam in 1907 creating an influx of Western firms. Here are some snippets: "Chinese hari bazaar the coolies decided to do no work because I wouldn't give them a full day for 1/2 day's work. Had some trouble over sacking two." "Took F.R. round the mines dredge & power station & listened to what he had to say. He is a decent fellow a Scot from Edinburgh." "I went down to Tung Song Suratthani for money. Oscar Dorban got in. I was very pleased to see him & we discussed boxing especially his method of drying the samples & weighing them instead of finding their volume by displacement." ". 10 o'clock when I got my money from the bank. Caught the 11 am train to Ronpibon where Langdon met me & drove me out. White was on the train going to Haad Yai" "Received a letter from the OCPD Batu Gajah Office of the Consumer Protection Board inquiring about my pistol he wants me to apply for an export licence - nine months after I left the state." "Took a gang of coolies out to repair a broken bridge on the Langsuan road. had a beer & biscuits. Lazy in the afternoon & then went shooting. I bagged 4 with 6 shots." "A most energetic day. Went to the bore first thing & on my return struck the pipe line so decided to go up to the intake - some walk in all about 10 miles." "I can calmly accept the state of affairs - this life is quite bearable if one has enough work to do during the day. Today I was up late and spent most of the morning with the coolies shifting the dynamo field to the store. Siamese get my goat!" "The tractor with dynamo armature got stuck in the mud just outside the min & I with four coolies waited at Quentin Mooi till 1:30 PM for it. Got the tractor started after much trouble & watched it for 1/4 mile & then went ahead in the lorry from Q.H.H. with some motor starters. the lorry wheel came nearly off so had to walk the rest & send for a new wheel. the two trucks sent yesterday could not be used. they have no brakes. " "Sacked all the Siamese coolies in the morning through not turning up yesterday noon." "The governor called me into his house & gave me tea. Received my provisions from Bangkok I like the American cheese." "Went into Langsuan to answer a few questions of the 'Superintendant of Mines' - all over in fifteen minutes" "Met Clark in Langsuan he has just returned from a prospecting trip of the Chumphon district. " "Paid off my boring coolies luckily I had about 500 spare in the safe. Made lists of the boring tools in store. went for a walk to the dredge on the No.3 mine hole the power house & No.5 mine." "Brown from Nawong Pat is down here he is going to take Jay's place at P.S.H. Jay was nearly murdered on Wed. night at 9:30 o'clock by coolies who got into his room they held his woman & hit him on the head with an axe she escaped & rescued Jay & they had a fight but the coolies got them again & attempted to cut jay's throat - they made a cut 3" long." ".Imagine being tied to a black woman like Cundy - ugh. And now she has adopted a Siamese kid!!! Of course she looks after him well & is I truly believe faithful.I could never do it - pray to God that reason always controls my passion at any rate in that respect."; travels on company business to Penang and elsewhere in Malaya when investigating mining options and taking bores ".The journey took just under three hours & about half the way I rode owing to broken bridges & the amount of water on the road. The cart rocked & swayed over the rutty road & there was an unpleasant smell from the oxen. The driver - an Afgan - was certainly the most villainous looking man I have ever met he was a large & tall man wearing only khaki shorts & a dirty white shirt with a coloured handkerchief at his throat & an automatic on his hip. At Behor I stayed with Dawson - Aussie - & Agar - Irish - his assistant. The former owns a semi lode - semi alluvial mine. They live like natives the animals run all over the "bungalow" coolies walk in at will with their hats on - but it was better than living in a Chinese shop."; a giant iguana shot in his garden ".I've had it skinned the Siamese are having a feast and I shall give it to Mum to make shoes of."; tiger predations ".Clarke was greatly excited.& decided to set four spring guns but some Chinese came in the morning & cleared the undergrowth & built a machane a raised platform used in tiger hunting."; ants in his trousers ".Scratching all morning."; drinking and its attendant nightmares in one being shot by a coolie and set upon by a Chinese whore; his reading Hardy Dickens Hugo Anatole France Zane Grey et al. etc. Note: We list separately a 1932 diary written by Mayo detailing his time surveying in Southern Rhodesia. Emily eventually marries a surgeon by the name of George Aaron Marks. Frederick their son had Epilepsy because on several occasions Amelia mentions his "Attacks" or "Sickness" which sometimes last for an hour. 19280001935FINLAND SCANDINAVIA. Good. 1928. On offer is a charming original 1928 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified except by the initials 'LH' young girl we estimate 13 or 14 maybe 15 who is traveling from we believe her home in New York to Finland the birth country of her Mother. Using a 5 year diary gifted to her by her sister Lea she writes regularly from July 1st through September 2nd and the sporadically through to November 26th. In a beautiful hand the girl writes with a joie de vivre always addressing her Diary as if it were a living being! A young maybe naïve girl she makes charming 'goofs' calling the steward the stewart being shown some porcusos porpoises but goofs aside it is hard not to appreciate any young woman who can write: 'There's a movie tonight but I'm not going to go. I'm going to see some dreams.' Beyond this she is not too pleased initially with Finland. The home where she is staying is too primitive for her being wallpapered in newspaper and soot. The cemetery where her Grandmother and Father are buried is awful and unkempt and she promises herself to return and clear the mess and make them nice. She returns to better humor when they leave for other locales. Collectors and historians of early 20th Century Finland should be well pleased by the detail and observations of the charming precocious young woman. Here are some snippets: July 4 Then came dinner. They gave us each a whistle hat and noise maker. I'm keeping them as souvenirs. I also swiped a menu and a flower from our table. I met a swell boy he is a katzy dancer that's how I met him. He's very interesting and he showed me some Porcuses sic. Played a game of shuffleboard with him. There was dancing and fireworks until 10:30. July 12 they landed in Sweden: July 12 Well we landed and a great bus took us to the station at Goteburg. Here we tried to buy some oranges and I handed the lady 30 cents and she laughed at me took the oranges away and handed me my money. Then I went to get Swedish money and got my oranges. Then we took a dinky train to Stockholm at 11:30pm. We didn't sleep a wink. But looked at scenery because it doesn't get dark here in Sweden. July 15 Well I guess I am not going to like it any too well here. Where Martha lives it's halfway decent but at Laihoses it's awful. Gee the food is awful and they only have three rooms and the walls are papered with old newspapers and the roof is black with soot. Then we went to the graveyard to see my grandmother and grandfather's graves. They're left so carelessly that you can hardly tell they're there. I am going to fix both of them soon. She continued to find quite a difference between living in Finland and the USA: July 18 Anyway after dinner we started and I was dressed in my best and so was Ma and we had to climb over 7 fences and cross over 8 brooks climb two big hills and walk thru two meadows so you can imagine what I looked like when I got there. July 19 Here we wash our clothes in the sauna and then carry them a mile and rinse them by the brook and carry them back again and try to hang them with what they call clothespins. They're like snappers and you press one end and the other end snaps and holds the clothes on the line. July 29 Well here we are in No Man's Land. There's only one house beside the one I'm staying in on the whole island. This morning for breakfast we had some flour pudding - ugh! Then I rowed Ma Martha and me and 5 others to Putila - that's about three times the length of Baisly Lake. Oh Boy! I had some fun. Then we came back and for dinner we had potatoes and fish that wasn't so bad. Aug 18 Then we went to Lokalahti and were invited to stay overnight in Kelon Antila so of course we did. I slept with Martha awhile when I remembered the bed chamber pot full of p---. So I got up and asked Martha what I should do with it and she said "Throw it out of the window". I took her advice and hurried to bed. Aug 30 Then Martha came home and on the way she stopped for my pipe. I measured it and it's 29 inches long. I guess you can get mile long wiffs out of a pipe like that. In the evening we went to Roostens and I saw one of the first clocks used in Finland. The machine is made of wood and it only has one hand. So you can never tell how many minutes past anything it is. Had a nice evening.' ; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF TRAVEL FINLAND OCEAN TRAVEL 20TH CENTURY GENDER STUDIES SOCIAL STUDIES WOMEN'S STUDIES EUROPEAN TRAVEL SCANDINAVIA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . hardcover

19280009176SYMRNA WILMINGTON DELAWARE DE. Good. 1928. On offer is a thoroughly fascinating diary from the life of Mary Elizabeth Donovan an active and interesting woman living in Smyrna Delaware in 1928. Mary was born in 1905 making her 23 years old here. The diary presents her accounts of each day her trips to family members around the state of Delaware details from the lives of her brothers Paul and Walter and most often and described in the most detail her relationship with her boyfriend Roland. Donovan is obviously quite devoted to her family and relationships as almost every entry in the diary concerns events stories and accounts of her family or her boyfriend. It seems little happens in her life that isnt connected to her loved ones. Yet her life is active and fun and she seems to take quite a lot of delight in her daily activities. The entries rarely extend more than a page or two and the longest ones are almost always on the weekend where Mary describes her days and activities in much greater detail. The diary contains approximately 150 pages of handwritten diary entries and the book itself is about 200 pages in total. The covers are full soft leather binding with a fair bit of duct tape used to repair the covers and spine. The binding is still quite tight and the book holds together perfectly. The pages inside are in very good condition showing almost no age-toning or rips and tears. The handwriting is neat and easily legible throughout. There is the occasional smudging and some pages are more faded than others but the legibility of the content is not affected. This is a very fine diary representing a lovely slice of life and presents the life of a young woman at the end of the 1920s kind energetic and intensely family-focused. Text: April 8 1928. Easter.
