Eay was a military journalist for the 101st Division during the division's first deployment in Iraq. He also served tours in Kuwait and New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "Along the Tigris" tells the story of 16000 soldiers in combat from the training grounds of Fort Campbell through the toughest battles in the blitz of Baghdad to the Nineveh province where the 101st Airborne Division anchored for eight months after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Without precedent or a plan the division sketched the blueprint to win the peace as they went - rebuilding schools and health clinics reestablishing the local infrastructure standing up city governments and building trust with the local people. "Along the Tigris" gets beyond the headlines telling the true story of the Army's most storied division in the Iraq war. The 101st Airborne Division Air Assault "Screaming Eagles" is a light infantry division of the United States Army that specializes in air assault operations. It can plan coordinate and execute multiple battalion-size air assault operations to seize terrain. These operations can be conducted by mobile teams covering large distances fighting behind enemy lines and working in austere environments with limited or degraded infrastructure. Its unique battlefield mobility and high level of training have kept it in the vanguard of U.S. land combat forces in recent conflicts: for example foreign internal defense and counterterrorism operations in Iraq in Afghanistan and in Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Established in 1918 the 101st Division was first constituted as an airborne unit in 1942. The Screaming Eagles have been referred to as "the tip of the spear" by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the most potent and tactically mobile of the U.S. Army's divisions by General Edward C. Meyer then Chief of Staff of the Army. In 2003 Major General David H. Petraeus "Eagle 6" led the Screaming Eagles to war during the 2003 invasion of Iraq Operation Iraqi Freedom. The division was in V Corps providing support to the 3rd Infantry Division by clearing Iraqi strongpoints which that division had bypassed. 3rd Battalion 187th Infantry 3rd Brigade was attached to 3rd Infantry Division and was the main effort in clearing Saddam International Airport. The division then served as part of the occupation forces of Iraq using the city of Mosul as their primary base of operations. 1st and 2d Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment 1st Brigade oversaw the remote airfield Qayarrah West 30 miles 48 km south of Mosul. The 502d Infantry Regiment 2d Brigade and 3d Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment were responsible for Mosul itself while the 187th Infantry Regiment 3d Brigade controlled Tal Afar just west of Mosul. The 101st Airborne also participated in the Battle of Karbala. 101st Airborne Division was awarded a Valorous Unit Award for their combat performance. On the afternoon of 22 July 2003 troops of the 101st Airborne 3/327th Infantry HQ and C-Company aided by U.S. Special Forces killed Qusay Hussein and his older brother Uday during a raid on a home in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. After about four hours of battle the whole operation lasted 6 hours the soldiers entered the house and found four dead including the two brothers and their bodyguard. Once replaced by the first operational Stryker Brigade the 101st was withdrawn in early 2004 for rest and refit. Schiffer Military History hardcover

As the oil on canvas portrait of Se-Loc-Ta: A Creek Chief was destroyed by fire in 1865 the original hand-colored lithographs by JT Bowen are the only surviving rendering of this essential chapter of Americana. During the first quarter of the nineteenth century as the Native American people traveled to Washington DC to discuss their plight; the loss of their lands and destruction of their people they appealed to Thomas McKenney the then Chief to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in whom they found a sincere advocate in the efforts to improve the welfare of the Native American people. After meeting to discuss the situation McKenney invited every one of his guests to sit for formal portraits and included all members; not only the Chiefs but also the Warriors Braves and Women. A pioneer in the study of North American ethnology and superintendent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs under John C. Calhoun Thomas Loraine McKenney Chestertown MD 1785-1859 assembled in his War Department office a virtual archive of the American Indian; a large collection of books manuscripts artifacts and paintings that constituted the first museum in Washington DC. The core of the collection was a gallery of 150 portraits of prominent Indian men and women most of them painted by Washington artist Charles Bird King Newport RI 1785-1862 during official visits to Washington. In addition King copied and painted several portraits after James Otto Lewis 1799-1858. These portraits were later published as part of a mammoth lithography project that McKenney conceived of and launched with the aid of writer James Hall Philadelphia 1793-1868. Known as the History of the Indian Tribes of North America the publication features the portraits and biographies of 120 Indian men and women from McKenneys collection.
