A rare first trade edition copy of one of Simenon's 'romans durs' a semi-autobiographical novel in the very scarce dust wrapper designed by J. Jacquelin. A very scarce first trade edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper designed by the notable French poster artist Jean Jacquelin 1905-1989. Jacquelin created numerous travel posters as well as graphic posters for two Le Mans 24 hour races in 1972 and 1974. Georges Simenon 1903-1989 was a popular Belgian author best remembered for his detective novels featuring his famous character Maigret. He also achieved critical acclaim for his literary novels which he called his romans durs. This novel one of Simenon's romans durs follows the fall of the successful Professor Jean Chabot and reflects the author's own inner crises in the 1960s.This is the first trade edition written in the original French and published simultaneously alongside the large paper edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the end papers. Dust wrapper remains bright and generally smart with a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine and edgewear to the lower extremities causing three small tears. Si ces romans ne figurent pas dans le cycle officiel des « Maigret » c'est parce que Simenon a établi - notamment en 1975 une époque où il occultait farouchement toute oeuvre antérieure à 1931 - une distinction entre son oeuvre illégitime les ouvrages publiés sous des pseudonymes et son oeuvre reconnue les ouvrages publiés sous son patronyme. Le « cycle officiel » comprend 75 romans 4 recueils de nouvelles et 28 nouvelles en revues ; 50 de ces romans paraissent aux Presses de la Cité dont les maquettes connaîtront quatre présentations différentes. A partir de Maigret voyage publié en décembre 1957 la présentation s'uniformise avec un fond de couleur uniforme ou apparaît un profil de l'auteur en ombre chinoise avec chapeau et pipe depuis laquelle prolongée sur le premier plat s'échappent des ronds de fumée contenant le nom de l'auteur et le titre : tous les titres de cette série seront en édition originale numérotée et tirée sur beau papier où tirage de luxe et tirage ordinaire portent le même achevé d'imprimer.
