Le commissaire est en congé mais l'affaire le rattrape - ou plutôt il s'en amuse : depuis son fauteuil de la rue de Turenne dans l'appartement qu'il partage avec Madame Maigret il lit la presse écoute les rumeurs et suit à distance une enquête qu'il ne mène pas. Celle sur le cadavre d'une femme nue retrouvée dans un cabinet médical devient le théâtre d'un ballet invisible où les gestes des autres - policiers journalistes suspects - suffisent à faire émerger la vérité. Ainsi l'inspecteur Janvier aidé par quelques coups de pouce anonymes de Maigret parviendra à conclure seul sa première enquête. Mais pour montrer au commissaire qu'il n'a pas du tout été dupe de son petit subterfuge il lui adresse une lettre anonyme sur laquelle il inscrit deux mots : « Merci patron. ». Un Maigret tout à fait atypique mais néanmoins de référence qui s'impose comme une réflexion sur l'intuition et la rigueur de la pensée pour résoudre une énigme fusse-t-elle à distance.
