Title printed in red and black with engraved printer’s device signed B.P. 4 624 pages; woodcut initials tailpieces and other devices; 6 engraved folding plates depicting plans assemblies and antiquities; one engraved text illustration depicting both sides of a Roman bronze coin of Gordian. Binding a trifle worn but nearly fine and still very attractive. One folding plate with marginal wear from folding. Near fine. A scarce volume of the proceedings of the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres including l’Abbé de Fontenu’s “Dissertation sur une Médaille de Gordien-Pie & sur l’Histoire de la Ville de Sinope où cette Médaille a été frappée.†The Academy was founded in 1663 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Often referred to as the “petite Académy†this small group was responsible for advising on matters of iconography and the proper use of Latin on monuments memorials and notably medals. Service des Antiquités et des Beaux-Arts. Bibliothèque archéologique et historique ; v. 5-6</em>.Paris: P. Geuthner 1925-1942. This wonderful work is a mystery to me regarding the correct description. Some say it is in four volumes plus an atlas three volumes. Others say it's three volumes plus three volumes portfolios. Still others have it described as two volumes in four. I will do my best to describe the two volumes that I have. First of all the volumes that I have are bound in black library buckram 9" x 11" and came from the library of a world famous museum. It has library cataloguing stickers at bottoms of the spines. With bookplates of the institution on front lining papers. Library de-accession stamps are in books. Doesn't show much wear otherwise. Also gilt lettering on spine note that they are "<em>1. PT 1. Texte</em>" and "2 Texte". </p><p>The first volume appears to be Volume V of the series. It was published in 1925 lxiii 294 pages plus list of contents table of figures corrigendum page. Illustrations black and white in text. It is described on the title page as "Tome Premier Premiere Partie"</p><p>The second volume has a dent to the top page corner of binding in pretty much the same state as the first volume. This would be Volume VI of the series. This was published in 1936 by Guenther in Paris. viii 535 pages. List of contents black and white illustrations. "<em>Tome Deuxieme Premiere Partie</em> " runs to page 388 where " Tome Deuxieme Deuxieme Partie " continues to the end. This the second part was published in Paris in 1942. There is some toning to the paper edges probably a new paper supplier given the war-time situation. That's the best I can do. Overall the volumes are in good clean tight condition but very heavy volumes. </p><p><em>A touching memorial to M. de Jerphanion's mother: Je depose ce livre sur la tombe de ma mère – G de J.</em></p><p>The volumes of texte: <strong>$200 Top shelf left</strong>.
