AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT LIVRE D'ARTISTE, WITH PENCIL-SIGNED ETCHINGS BY MAURICE UTRILLO AND HIS WIFE, LUCIE VALORE, AND UNSIGNED ETCHINGS BY PICASSO AND BERNARD LAMOTTE. This book is a collection of poems about Montmartre by Vertex (there is even a poem dedicated to Utrillo and Valore!), illustrated with reproductions of drawings by many artists associated with Montmartre, including Marie Laurencin, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dignimont, Laprade, Charles GuÈrin, Roger Wild. and Vertex himself. Also illustrated with FOUR LOOSE HORS-TEXTE ETCHINGS, one each by Utrillo, Valore, Picasso, and Bernard Lamotte.. All four etchings are signed in the plate. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY printed for Robert Conchon. On the verso of the title-page is a fine presentation inscription to Conchon underneath the reproduced drawing by Vertex, which he has colored by hand in this copy. Furthermore, THE ETCHINGS BY UTRILLO AND VALORE ARE SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTISTS. Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), among the greatest of modern artists, married his fellow artist (and former patron) Lucie Valore (1878-1967) in 1935, after she had been widowed. Utrillo made very few original prints, and signed impressions are of the utmost rarity. From a total edition of 110 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED ON FINE MARAIS WOVE PAPER. From the private collection of Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), the leading American print dealer. Large folio. Loose as issued in wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED. A few creases to extreme margin of half-title, else FINE AND BRIGHT. In the original (somewhat worn) board chemise and slipcase. Utrillo was surely Montmartre's most emblematic artist, and the signed etchings by him and his wife make this a truly wonderful book. Since these etchings are loose (as issued), they are ready for framing.
1921100261<p>Milano January 15 1921. 1921. Very good. - Over 60 words penned in Italian on 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide cream "Via Verdi 4 Milano" stationery. Puccini writes to the publishers Fratelli Treves on behalf of his friend the writer Enrico Pea. He addresses Guido Treves the nephew of the firm's founder Emilio Treves who took over the company upon Emilio's death in 1916. Guido Treves ran the company with his wife Antonietta. Puccini writes that there is a manuscript awaiting publication at Treves' house. It is from his dear friend the Apuan region poet Enrico Pea. He asks that publication be expedited as there is a second volume ready for print. Puccini states that he wrote to Beltrami Giovanni Beltrami the managing director at Fratelli Treves who promised that it would be published soon. Signed "tuo yours G. Puccini" followed by his regards to Guido's wife. Folded horizontally and vertically for mailing the letter is slightly creased at the corners with a couple of minuscule chips to the edges. Once mounted there are remnants of archival tape along the top edge of the verso.</p><p>Giacomo Puccini often enjoyed a table at the Antico Caffe di Simo in Lucca with his friend Enrico Pea.</p><p>The book being discussed by Puccini is without doubt the first volume in Pea's "Trilogia del Moscardino" simply titled "Moscardino" published by Fratelli Treves in 1922. The book was translated into English by Ezra Pound. It was reviewed in the January 1 2005 edition of the New York Review of Books: "A small masterpiece Pea's lyrical autobiographical novel paints a fiery and intimate portrait of an old man through the brushstrokes of his grandson. The passions and tensions between the old eccentric and his brothers play themselves out in mythical sketches before a vivid backdrop of the hills of Lunigiana. Moscardino the first novella of his tetralogy Il romanzo di Moscardino is anarchic and haunting. Pound conducts Pea's vernacular song allowing images to flow from the land the flesh and beyond."</p><p>Little needs to be said about the life of the great Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini 1858-1924 who composed several of the best known Italian operas. His works include "Manon Lescaut" "La Boheme" "Madama Butterfly" and "Turandot" among many other works.</p><p>The Italian poet novelist playwright and theatre impressario Enrico Pea 1881-1958 produced literary works that are said to be divided into two periods. The first being that of "Moscardino" and the second beginning with "Il Figlioccia" which takes on a softer delicate modulated style.</p> Milano, January 15, 1921.

1747D4268Paris 1747. Very Good. Large format calligraphic manuscript on paper in French. Paris: c.1747. Large folio 490 x 330mm. 101 leaves. Written in brown ink in a cursive hand under calligraphic headings. Original vellum stained green gilt-lettered title to morocco label on spine REGIE DES VIVRES 1741 1742 1743 COMPTE DE M PASQUIE ; small split to the head of the spine corners slightly bumped lacking ties overall in very attractive condition. <br/><br/>This attractive manuscript details in fine calligraphy the staffing and accounts of the Army of Bohemia composed of French Bavarian and Saxon troops from 1741 to 1743. This time encompassed the occupation of Prague by Charles Elector of Bavaria who had raised a claim to the Bohemian throne at the outset of the Wars of the Austrian Succession. This war was a conflict that embroiled most of Europe and spilled over into America with the Anglo-Spanish War of Jenkins Ear. It is of great interest both for the high quality of the penmanship and for the historical interest of the contents which exhaustively details the staffing and provisioning of the Army of Bohemia. The account appears to have been prepared as a memorandum for François Pasquier principal clerk to the Army of Bohemia assimilating information on the regiments wartime expenses. hardcover books
