St. John Fisher 1469-1535 Bishop of Rochester from 1504 and simultaneously Chancellor of Cambridge University wrote against the Protestant heresies of Luther in Assertionis Lutheranae Confutatio 1523 and in the present work against the heresies of Johannes Oecolampadius Hussgen who had been the chief representative of the Protestant faction at the Baden Dispute of 1526.<br /> Bishop Fisher acted as principal advocate of Queen Catherine in the matter of her divorce. He refused the oaths of succession and supremacy refusing to recognize Henry VIII as head of the church; he was tried for treason and imprisoned; the bishop was named cardinal by Pope Paul III in May 1535 but this did not alter the outcome: Fisher was beheaded in June. Title page with allegorical woodcut frame richly detailed full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion framed by additional scenes from the Gospels including the Last Supper at foot. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of W. A. Foyle Beeleigh Abbey. Title page with early perhaps contemporary ink signature "Antonii de Levatis" see below; occasional ink marginalia in a similar hand. Adams F-519; Sander 2784; USTC 836964. A touch of rubbing to extremities free endpapers with offsetting from binder's glue and trivial chipping to edges title page perhaps washed and pressed occasional mild browning or small ink spots other trivial imperfections but an excellent copy the text clean and fresh and the binding solid and lustrous.<br/> <br/> In an attractively blind-decorated Riviere binding this is the Foyle copy of a scarce early printing of an extremely influential counter-Reformation work. "Assertionis Lutherenae Confutatio" first published in 1523 is a systematic refutation of several of Luther's fundamental doctrinal points focusing on free will the rejection of papal authority and the concepts of salvation through faith alone and of scripture as the sole authority "sola fide" and "sola scriptura". "Assertionis" had a major influence on Catholic arguments against Luther as well as on Catholic understanding of his beliefs: historian Richard Rex writes in DNB that "many of the bishops and even theologians at the Council of Trent knew whatever they knew of Luther largely from Fisher's refutation." Our author St. John Fisher ca. 1469-1535 bishop of Rochester was a scholar and theologian who published widely and helped establish St. John's College Cambridge. His later career was largely taken up with resistance to the growing Protestant movement which led to his eventual beheading at the order of Henry VIII. The present Venetian edition was the work of Gregorio de Gregori fl. 1496-1527 who is best known for having printed the first book in Arabic movable type. It features charmingly detailed and lively woodcuts with a mixture of poignant biblical scenes cheeky humor and graceful flora and fauna. Sander tells us that these were recut in imitation of the prints in de Gregori's 1513 missal. It is not inconceivable that the "Antonii de Levatis" of the title page could have been the Spanish nobleman Antonio de Leyva 1480-1536; he was a general during the Italian Wars serving as commander-in-chief of the Milanese army from 1525-35 eventually rising to Governor of Milan during the final year of his life putting him in an important political position in Italy during the time our book was printed. The modern elements of binding and ownership are important here. With an appealing modeled portrait of the author in blind the present Riviere binding announces why it comes from one of Britain's foremost and longest-lived binderies. And our former owner the bookseller W. A. Foyle 1885-1963 was an avid and discriminating collector whose three large sales at Christie's held in 2000 were a bibliophilic highlight of the new century. The sum of $19 million for which Foyle's personal library sold in July set a record for private European collections. Gregorius de Grego unknown
