A small quarto of 9 5/8 by 6 inches with wear and rubbing to the exterior edges of both boards and rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine. There is a prior owner's book plate reading "Brian Douglas Stilwell" on the front paste down. Without a dust jacket. Claud Lovat Fraser 1890-1921 was a wonderful illustrator of books broadsides posters bookplates prints advertisements periodicals and theater design. His father was a London solicitor and after leaving Charterhouse School 1907 Lovat began to read law. Wi thin four years he decided to make art his profession. Most of his early works were caricatures in the tradition of Max Beerbohm. But he grew quickly as an artist and in 1912 established a publishin g venture with the poet Ralph Hodgson & the bibliophile Holbrook Jackson called 'At the Sign of the Flying Fame'. At the outbreak of World War One he enlisted in spite of a constitution weakened by rheumatic fever. He became a Captain of the 14th Durham Light Infantry. At the battle of Ypres salient his was the first battalion to undergo a gas attack. Though debilitated by his battlefield exper iences he continued to render valuable service to the war effort. After the armistice he entered his most productive period. He died after an operation while on vacation in Dymchurch Kent. "I reviv e after 6 p.m. and by 8 I am in full swing and work like a devil. I have enormous accumulations of work to clean up if I am to exist at all as an artist. If I had a month and worked from 8 a.m til 10 p .m. I believe I should still be three years behind-hand. The scarce mid nineteenth century children's tales bound in one slight volume and illustrated throughout. The first of the three charming tales present here is the 1845 James Burns edition of Adelbert Chamisso's 'The Shadowless Man' in a scarce early English language translation of the original German. Featuring a small number of vignette illustrations and a frontispiece.The second tale present bound without a title page is Charles Nodier's scarce children's tale 'Bean Flower and Pea Blossom' published by Chapman and Hall in 1846.This delightful work of fantasy is illustrated with a chromolithograph plate and numerous vignette illustrations from engraver Tony Johannot and features nine pages of publisher's advertisements for 'The Boy's Own Book'.The final work is an 1845 James Burns edition of 'Fables and Parables' featuring English translations of German stories by Lessing Herder Gellert and Meissner and with a small number of vignette illustrations.With a contemporary inscription to the head of the title page of 'Fables and Parables' dated 1845. In a full cloth binding. Bumping to spine tail with the odd light mark to boards otherwise externally excellent. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright with the odd light spot.
