Cream dustwrappers unclipped slightly toned on spines minor foxing spots to panels. Small hole to dustwrapper on spine in Vilette vol.1 only see picture. Dustwrappers protected in removable clear plastic sleeves. The Thornton Edition first published in 1901 and including Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Bronte became the standard text of the Bronte's works in the early twentieth century. The sisters Charlotte Emily and Anne are well-known poets and novelists who like many contemporary female writers published their work under male pseudonyms: Currer Ellis and Acton Bell respectively. Their stories attracted attention for their passion and originality immediately following their publication. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success while Emily's Wuthering Heights Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were accepted as masterpieces of literature only after their deaths. Externally smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines of the odd volume with small marks to the boards. Minor splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spines with a 1" split to the spine of volume VII. Hinges starting but firm with the front free endpaper of volume II loosening. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the extremities. The odd small ink underline with contemporary ink inscriptions to the endpapers.
