Jacket is marked and sunned. Edges are creased and nicked including small tears chips and repairs with tape from within. Boards are sunned. Edges corners and spine ends are bumped and rubbed with the front upper bump leading into the pages. Spine is cocked. Page block face and foot are rough cut and tanned. With a tissue guarded frontispiece illustrated title page and a further 22 full page colour plates after watercolours by C. E. Brock. A near fine copy the binding square and firm the vellum and gilt bright and fresh. The contents with just a little toning to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. A beautifully illustrated and produced deluxe edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's classic of English literature issued in J. M. Dent's 'Series of English Idylls'. Rockwell Sayer aka Sayre was a Chicago banker best known for his long-running crusade against cats best represented in his 1921 opinion piece arguing for the abolition by which he meant extermination of cats published with an opposing viewpoint by Mrs. George Kessel the National Secretary of the American Cat Association see Bisbee Review November 27 1921. ODNB 'Gaskell nee Stevenson Elizabeth Cleghorn' Jenny Uglow. An attractive example of one of Gaskell's most popular novels a loosely connected series of satirical sketches with an unusual association. Cranford was serialized in Household Words by Dickens. Besides known for her books Cranford and North and South she also wrote the biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte along with several other works. A very nice copy bound by E.P. Dutton in 3/4 blue crushed morocco over marbled paper covered boards raised bands gilt compartments decorated in red floral gilt onlays top edge gilt original gilt decorated cloth covers bound in at rear just a bit of fading to spine. Very nice. E.P. Dutton unknown
