Collects six tales and a poem "The Scholar's Story" by William Gaskell a Breton ballad translated from the French of the Vicomte de la Villemarque selected and introduced by Michael Ashley. Together with Dickens' work Gaskell's ghost fiction helped consolidate the association of the supernatural tale with the Victorian Christmas . Her ghost stories are scattered throughout various periodicals and books and no single collected existed until 1978 when Michael Ashley produced MRS GASKELL'S TALES OF MYSTERY AND HORROR." - Wilson Shadows in the Attic p. 226.
