Gaskell's bibliography lists and describes everything that came from the press of John Baskerville of Birmingham. After the introduction which describes the methods that Gaskell adopted and the conclusions that he draws from the investigation there are two main parts: 1 Specimens Proposals and Other Ephemera and 2 Books. Each entry contains a quasi-facsimile transcription of the title-page and gives details of formula contents cancels errors plates paper type etc. In an Appendix there is a detailed list of the books printed at the Oxford University Press and by Robert Martin in Baskerville's type before 1775. A very careful bibliography of interest to historians of printing and typography as well as collectors of Baskerville and bibliographers. The 12 plates mostly illustrate unique copies of Baskerville's ephemera. There is a full-size facsimile folding sheet of Baskerville's last type-specimen contained in a pocket so that it can be removed for comparison with a book. Very Good in the remains of the dustwrapper completely torn down spine. Two letters relating to a point of Baskerville bibliography loosely inserted. Internally clean front endpapers slightly browned but the text block remains otherwise in excellent clean condition. Very good. With a Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. This 'New Edition' is the first with all Thomson�s pen and ink illustrations printed with partial colour-tinting MacMillan first published an edition with Thomson's uncoloured pen and ink illustrations in 1891 and the 1898 edition had previously included 40 of the illustrations printed in colour. Imprint to verso of title page reads: 'Reprinted with Coloured Illustrations October 1898. New Edition 1907.' This is also the first edition to feature the binding design by A.A.
